On the way back from China I took at least 100 shots of the clouds as we flew over the vast expanse of the Western Syberian Lowland, the Ural mountains, and on through Russia and northern Europe; but much to my dissapointment none of them captured anything remotely like the near sublime magic of flying many miles above the earth in a crystal clear sky. So here's an admittedly photoshopped compilation (/double exposure) of two shots, that, for me at least, goes some way towards capturing something of that experience. Let me know what you think. Oh, and both shots were taken at f8.0, at roughly 1/200s, ISO 100, with my 17-40mm lens.

Great shot! Absolutely lovely colours and an almost unreal feeling to it...

amazing colours interesting compilation ;)

It's an interesting idea but doesn't quite work for me i'm afraid. The sky seems interesting on it's own, but also seems a bit busy. Different from your usual stuff. - [Chuks]

The tip of the wing almost looks as if it's poking out of water. The blues are spectacular. As Erik said, there is an unreal feeling. I'm not sure how I feel about it but it does draw you in.

Thanks for sharing your pics from China. I've really enjoyed them.

comment by Mayur at 11:26 PM (GMT) on 8 November, 2005

Spectacular blues no doubt. But not your best composition, if i may dare say.

Keep em coming.

I've been flying for over 30 years, as a private pilot with thousands of hours and as a passenger on close to a hundred cross-ocean flights, and yet I can never get enough of this kind of scenery.

Cool shot.

I'll be honest and say i'm not sure about this one Dave. I see what effect you were going for - i'm just not a big fan of semi opacity in this sense :/

The colours and cloud formations are wonderful - it's just the double exposure i'm not so keen on :)

comment by alexander at 11:33 PM (GMT) on 8 November, 2005

I'm a big fan of this one, as I think it's more Chromasia-like than many of the China shots. I wish the wing we just a tad sharper, but I'm not complaining.

Quick question: I notice that quite a number of your shots fade out rather dramatically around the edges, especially in the corners, often to black. Is this simply the result of your circular polarizer, or is this a standard in your bag of post-processing tricks? Just curious.

Cheers.

awesome photoshopping. funny but i put up a blue shot today as well. its not nearly half as crisp as yours though.

This shot is really great!
An amazing view, an amazing shot!
It even suggests that when I leave (on the 14th for Japan), I should sit beside the window.
This shot comforts me a little from the sadness that I have been suffering since the day that I've known that I will be gone for work to Japan.

comment by isabel at 12:38 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

I love it. Well done. With this shot you have shown once more that digital photography is art in its own right! Keep experimenting!

comment by aaronn at 01:12 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

wow this is nice. At first glance i thought you captured a shadow of the plane's wing on the clouds!

comment by KK at 01:39 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

well, photoshopped or not, doesnt matter, its a great shot.

comment by nuno f at 02:26 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

What an atmosphere! This shot would have work only with the clouds photo without the wing, but you've managed to go beyond a simple composition and make a true visual pleasure. Great work!

comment by andrew at 02:36 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

I'm not big on the squishing of photos, in fact, it rather bothers me. This, however, somehow pulls it off. I could get over it this time. The colors are fantastic.

Super! Thank you very much!

comment by Fellow Eskimo at 04:00 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

I like the clouds by themselves...they are nice and fluffy and the sky is so blue. I am guessing you use vingenetting around the edges, no? Still a nice pic, I just dont like the opacy.

comment by Jeff at 04:11 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

I think that this is the first shot I've seen on here that I dislike without any reservation. I'm totally jealous of your talent, but there's nothing for me in this shot.

comment by nathan at 04:21 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

the thumbnail image on this comment page looked like it was moving while i was reading your info... freaky!

cool shot

comment by Karen at 05:33 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

I agree with alexander. This is the type of chromasiography I fell in love it a few months ago.

comment by Sharla at 07:21 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

I studied this shot for the longest time ... and I couldn't quite get it unless you had done a compilation. Well, silly me, I should have trusted my first and second impressions.

I'm not, as a rule, a fan of compilations, always fearing their emotional effect when overdone and overused. (It's a bit like standing and listening to someone lie to you; not something for which you'd volunteer.) However, I accept this one in the spirit it is offered and do enjoy the detail, the color, the composition, and the crop.

Your solution to the delimma of expressing those views from the heavenly side of the clouds is very nicely done and I have enjoyed the experience.

comment by GP at 08:13 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

Very nice double exposure in my opinion, and I like the colors too.

comment by Aidemedia - Dan at 09:23 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

great colours, the format works well with the wing shape. An amazing sky. Don't know if I like the opacity of the wing, but if wasn't I think it would lose the surreal quality.

comment by pierre at 10:06 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

Great stuff
Initially thought that was a landing strip :)

comment by Lew at 10:33 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

I love this one !

comment by Phil at 10:43 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

I really like this. The mixture of blues and whites here are wonderful. I didnt know what to make of the wing at first, then i read what was going on. I dig it.

comment by Rob at 10:44 AM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

A great idea and a cracking sky, just not personally keen on the opacity - i don't like the way the top of the wing appears to be covered in a cloud pattern. A great sky though!

I am a fan of your web-site/photos, but this one doesn't do it for me. Sorry!

comment by Lynn at 04:43 PM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

WOW!! I have to say, it's FANTASTIC!!!
I think I would never be regret to find your blog. You always got something surprise me!!

comment by Ioannis at 05:13 PM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

I think the blue is a bit too strong, and the effect with the wing alienating. I like the idea, but I am a bit more of a purist. That said, I have tried taking pictures from an aeroplane before and like you say it is very very hard to capture a feeling which this one, to an extent, does.

A note of warning - which I think is not needed when I comment on your website, but just in case: This is not meant as a negative comment, but rather as a constructive one. My taste obviously differs from everyone else's, but feel free to e-mail me if my critique does not make sense...

I like this image.
It seems to be the one scene of a movie completely.
Thanks! (^^)

Dave

I love this shot. For me it is a very simple graphic image and something that you are very good at.

This photo stands out alone or would equally look good with some typography overlayed and used in a brochure.

Well done.

comment by Emile Zwaltek at 06:49 PM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

That's an interesting idea and the technical aspect of the realisation is absolutely well done.

comment by kristine at 07:33 PM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

that looks so great! i love the various shades of blue... i wish i can capture the sky as well as you did someday. :)

comment by RustyJ at 07:43 PM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

When I first looked at this shot I wondered how you got a shadow of the wing on the clouds. Then I realized what I was looking at. I like the way the wing tip looks 'real' while as you move closer to the plane the appearance is more of a shadow. The comment of the wing tip coming out of the water really fits.

comment by Charlotte at 08:19 PM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

Wowo it's like swimming in a sea of sky (if that makes sense) - amazing!

comment by Paul Woolrich at 09:40 PM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

This is a really nice composition! I have also tried a few times to capture some nice shots while on a plane. I always find the windows really badly scratched so the image never looks very sharp.

comment by btz at 09:41 PM (GMT) on 9 November, 2005

Would have been better if the wing wasn't in the shot. It definitely has great color and beautiful design of the clouds. Nice work.

comment by idu at 12:18 AM (GMT) on 10 November, 2005

I too though it was a shadow of the wing on the clouds at first.

Perhaps it would have been interesting (or at least allowed me to focus on the whole shot more) if you had just colored the wing in gray, or whatever shade it actually was, blotting out the clouds beneath.

comment by djn1 at 12:25 AM (GMT) on 10 November, 2005

Thanks everyone.

As for the wing: I don't know. Maybe it would have been better without it, maybe not.

comment by johnv at 03:16 AM (GMT) on 10 November, 2005

i kinda liked it yesterday. i wasnt sure about the double exposure, almost too much to take in a first impression, for me. i loved the colors though, especially the deep deep blues

but today, from first glance i really liked it. at some points - on the left end - the wing looks like the shadow of the wing on the clouds beneath. all the more surreal as the wing becomes the real thing

btw: love this site, love your clever titles, love your summaries, love the people's comments. alright, gotta stop saying love...or maybe i should never stop saying love. whatever...thanks!...later

What a gorgeous image!

comment by Phil at 04:07 PM (GMT) on 19 November, 2005

I recently travelled to Abu Dhabi and India, and I also took about 100-200 cloud shots, thinking that they would be some of the greatest shots I ever took. I envisioned framing them in my cube, being able to look at them and remember flying above Europe and the Middle East. But they all came out kind of crappy. Shame. You took a great picture, though!

comment by fido at 06:08 PM (GMT) on 22 November, 2005

Brilliant! At first I thought it was a shadow of the wing. But figured out (eventually) it was a double exposure. I like the way the wing isn't imposing on the picture. Nice touch!

comment by Lee at 03:41 PM (GMT) on 6 January, 2006

I am envious to say the least, I am no proffessional and have attempted in the past to photograph the sky from an aircraft, and alas, have failed. This shot however has inspired me to try again. With any luck I maybe off to America later this year and will seize my opportunity then. Fantastic colour, great shot.
