First of all, thanks for all the great comments on yesterday's shot, they were much appreciated. As for today's: I suspect it might not be quite as well liked ;-) Oh, and my apologies for the brevity of my recent entries, but I've been knackered this week and can't think of anything sensible or interesting to write.

This is... a great photo. Nice point of view, very well processed and imaginative. What more could we ask for?
Very creative.

I really like this image, the colours in the sign are so strong. Have you altered the colours in the background, there seems to ba a slight green tinge to them.
comment byJustin Gaynor at 06:43 PM (GMT) on 7 December, 2005
The sharpness on the sign is great, I also like the color contrast between the vibrant sign and the earthy/muted sky.
comment bydjn1 at 06:43 PM (GMT) on 7 December, 2005
VelviaPix: I like it, I just wasn't sure how well it would be received ;-)
SteveO: yes, the colour balance of the background was shifted a little, mostly to better distinguish the sign from the sky.
comment byMike at 07:56 PM (GMT) on 7 December, 2005
Great shot, David. The sign is so vivid and modern-looking. Great contrast to the old building in the background. Nice.

Terrific. I really like the punch of the colour on the sign. The little stripe at the top of the pole is fortunate.

i love the angle and the quality of the picture.
what resolution do you take your photogaphs in?
comment byJamey at 10:57 PM (GMT) on 7 December, 2005
At 1/400 the sign and building must have been pretty dark, surely? Or was this a tripod double-exposure job?
comment byninu at 11:30 PM (GMT) on 7 December, 2005
okay I always check the post to see if I can 'ever be first' on chromasia...you all must have some ties with DJN right?...lol The minute he posts the new shot for the day all your cell phones must go off the hook with an SMS or something.
Great shot David! I love the vibrant blue and how bold the red stands out. Some people might not take it as openly. They might see the red as an outlier that takes away from the shot. I feel it gives it some interesting personality and character to the overall shot.
I just got a 20D and a 17/40 F4L along with a 70-200mm F4/L. I don't know if I will ever be able to get to where you are in your level of photography but hopefully someday. If you don't mind me asking. I can't find anywhere in the manual how to keep the flash from popping up. I see that you shoot alot (if not all) of your shots in the aperture priority mode. Is there a setting I need to place the camera on so that the flash will not pop up each time I take a shot in aperture priority mode? Really would appreciate the tip. Again great job!~
-Cheers

Just helping out ninu...
From http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/20D/
In "green zone" and PIC modes the built in flash will pop up automatically. In the creative modes (M, Tv, Av, P etc.) the flash can be manually activated.
-----
If you are in a creative mode, just hit the flash button the left-hand side of the camera. In my manual (Canada), this topic is covered on page 92.
Switching to David's shot, I too like this shot. I like the brilliance of the sign juxtaposed against the sky and building. Great shot.
comment by TJB at 04:11 AM (GMT) on 8 December, 2005

I like the sharpness and the color contrasts and the composure.

comment bydjn1 at 01:34 PM (GMT) on 8 December, 2005
flying cow: do you mean which format? If so, RAW.
ninu: I think Kevin's got it right.
ps: no, I didn't clean it, but I did clone out a couple of spots.
Maxine: ok, point taken ;-)
seb/Lyle: it was taken in Blackpool, but I'm afraid I'm not sure which building it is.
dan: it means that it's a dead-end street.
comment byDan at 01:47 PM (GMT) on 8 December, 2005
Really like the sharp colour contrast between the sign (which means T-junction ahead, don't die driving into it ;) and the sky. Great composition!
comment bydjn1 at 02:04 PM (GMT) on 8 December, 2005
Dan: I looked up the sign, as I wasn't sure, and it means no through road for vehicles so I guess we're both right, kind of ;-)

Gosh, I think I'm the only person who doesn't like this as much as yesterday's shot! Or at least, owns up to it!
Why? It feels confusing to me, with the mix of modern bright (cute?) colours and old feeling building & soft sky. The sign = dead end, yet we are looking up...to more possibilities.
Do please keep experimenting Dave.
