I spotted this billboard while wandering the other day and liked the contrast between the fading advertisment and the various layers of previous ad's on the left of the image.

Grunge style! Cool.

In addition to being interesting as a whole image, this one is also fun to see what else you can see it; a sort of impromptu Rohrschach test. For example, the Japanese mod-gangster type fellow with wrap-around blue sunglasses just to the up and right of center. Or perhaps the winking slightly distorted VanGogh-like face (with VanDyke beard and one bluegrey eye) near the upper edge and about one fourth of the distance from the left margin (just to the left of the blackish area speckled with white).
comment by peter cohen at 11:25 PM (GMT) on 17 December, 2005
And yes, thank you David for taking the red highlighting off of the print-purchasing info line.
comment bydjn1 at 11:45 PM (GMT) on 17 December, 2005
peter: I can see the Japanese mod-gangster, but can't make out the VanGogh-like face. As for the print-purchasing thing: the reason I included it is that I get a few emails each month asking me if I sell prints. On reflection though, it's probably not an ideal place to put it so I'll probably take it down again at some point soon.
comment byTommy at 01:15 AM (GMT) on 18 December, 2005
Nice, it's a great mess of things that were previously clear and clean... Good mix of colors. I tried for a while but can't seem to find any other hidden images, but thanks for pointing those couple out, peter..i see the VanGogh-like face, but only because you mentioned the blue-grey eye... It's literally touching the black/whitespotted area, and leaning a bit to the left, yeah? Cool.
comment bynuno f at 01:41 AM (GMT) on 18 December, 2005
This is kind of a mind game to see if we discover what adds were there before. It's great to see how the different pieces of advertisment play very well together. Is it my impression or the car is a Toyota Corola?
comment bymichael at 02:48 AM (GMT) on 18 December, 2005
I like the idea of the layers within the image. However, I find the composition too cluttered. Maybe a bit of cropping would help but that's just my opinion. Thanks for all the great images.
comment byJohn at 03:07 AM (GMT) on 18 December, 2005
I'm not sure I follow some of the previous comments, but I like this picture. It reminds me of some of Walker Evans' wonderful torn movie posters from the 1930s, with layers of competing information and wonderful textures. Even the faded color works to great effect.
comment by peter cohen at 05:45 AM (GMT) on 18 December, 2005
okay then, here's another...
the black area in the center left- it's a bat/vampire cape. The creature who's wearing it has its' devilish little head (one horn broken off) hung downward and towards us (below and within the shoulders of the cape). Two beady eyes...
;-)

This pic is really good...Most of us wouldn't have the eye to capture this pic. What you tried to potrait there, I must say it is excellent
comment by stephanie at 02:46 PM (GMT) on 18 December, 2005
very nice shot! i love all the layers of advertisement, how old it looks, the faded paper. It's all great! This is one my favorite of yours!
comment byDan at 02:56 PM (GMT) on 18 December, 2005
Really cool shot. I initially thought it was two photos sandwiched together, but in reading your comment, I see that's not the case. The old advertising of the car really looks like a photo cause of the parking lines... Cool layers and effect.

There is a whole tradition in photography of images showing decay. Photography really can play a role in getting people to consider the pushed aside. Its amazing how in real life people could pass this scene without ‘seeing it’ but if presented to them in the context of a finished constructed observation, ie: a great photograph they can ‘see it’ !
Nice One.

Not bad. This type of photo actually gets done by everyone, but theres a knack to it. Seems like there's quite a bit peeling off that wall. With some more interesing lighting it'd look even less flat.. Check out:

I see the degradation of human society, man's struggle to define his identity with the automobile and holy Rorschach I see the Japanese gangster and the flipped view of the UK. Sort of. I like the feeling you don't really know what layer you are looking at. I am actually worried now, I think I found Van Gough-Dyke man too. He's got red hair right?
Keep walking around David, it's great.
Thank you.
comment by peter cohen at 09:50 PM (GMT) on 19 December, 2005
RustyJ: Yes, Van-GoghMan has red hair (ish). Or reddish Brillo on fire above his head or something.
And do you see the vampire guy?
Or how 'bout the scrunchy-face guy (he's almost all white) with the longish jaw and pointed nose who's peering out from behind the left edge of the caped vampire?
comment by RustyJ at 12:33 AM (GMT) on 20 December, 2005
Redish Brillo...that's him. I see a bat-wing-cape-type-thing but cannot really find the vampire himself. Scruched up man is everywhere, the blue-haired guy with the blue jacket is watching everyone from the upper left and I have found the perfect pair of woman's lips.
Layers upon layers what do I see?
I think I will be having nightmares tonight and I blame you Mr. Cohen.
Thanks David!
PS Do you see the guy just about to get run over by the car? He's wearing an overcoat. Or Pikachoo?
comment bydjn1 at 12:39 AM (GMT) on 20 December, 2005
LOL: there's a guy in the bottom left of the image – black trousers, while shirt, blue waistcoat – that has a saucepan on his head (with a cat in it) and a long-tailed raven sitting on his right shoulder. I haven't spotted the perfect pair of lips yet.
comment by peter of cohen at 02:07 AM (GMT) on 20 December, 2005
RustyJ: I see several people in front of the car, now that you mention it!... :-)
Herr Nightingale (after which there is a very fine "filme noir" fantasy book titled "Herr Nightingale and the Satin Woman", written by the fellow who actually did WRITE "ET The Extraterrestrial", one William Kotzwinkle, per se): Yes, I DO now see the fellow you're talking about - "Mr. Saucepan" in the lower left. Although I think the raven may be more taking the odd dump in his ear than sitting on his shoulder [I think you were just being polite ;-) ] The cat in the large teacup (or saucepan perhaps) is just the cutest darn cat in the whole photo I suspect! There is a famous cartoonist (not famous enough for me to remember his name of course) who has drawn faces just like that one (the round-nosed, slack-jawed fellow in the dark trousers) for decades.
Glad you got a chuckle out of my (typical for me) highly offbeat SEEing of your shot, which, by the way, I also do like in its' own right, as usual.
Perhaps generations of Net-travelers in ensuing years will come to this photo and spend hours/days/months/years staring into it and seeing what they can see... A whole new Internet genre... "Have you gotten into that Nightingale thing everybody's doing yet? It's really addicting. You gotta try it! And not too many ads on there either!"
Hunting now for perfect lips... signing off...

Start at the center of the photo...
Go left and slightly down, about one fourth of the way to the left side...
Plato is wearing the blue shoulder cloak and looking regally to the right. He has a scroll in the crook of his right arm and a small blackboard in front of him in his hand(s).
Okay, maybe it's Socrates.
;-)
comment by RustyJ at 11:59 PM (GMT) on 20 December, 2005
Peter: Oh no...I see Platocrates and the scroll. Does he have an Afro? I was kind of thinking there was a deranged parrot in the same area but I could be wrong.
djn1: I see the cat in the proverbial hat (or pan as it were)
To find the lips go up from the cat, past Pikachoo to the O and turn right, same level as the top of the O. There's a wee bit of a button nose too I think!
I also see a penguin with a blue Santa hat. Above and to the right of the Philosopher kind of looking down on him as penguins like to do.
This is better than the Sgt. Pepper's album cover!
