I took Rhowan and Harmony down to the beach the other afternoon, and after we'd explored the sand dunes and paddled in the waves, we looked for things to photograph. Of all of the things we found I think this was my favourite.

Wow! It looks like it's sweeping by itself!

comment by Markus Nilsson at 10:30 PM (GMT) on 22 December, 2005

I love your beach shots. I've said it before, and I say it again... but I understand if you feel a bit locked by your audiences expectations, so it's great when you publish shots like on the 19th December. The beach at your place must really be filled with flotsam!

Did you postprocess this shot extensively? It seems like it were such a typical British day with dull weather, but your colours are still vivid..?

Merry Christmas!

like the colors....great detail as well down low

comment by emma at 10:47 PM (GMT) on 22 December, 2005

your beach shots always make me smile - love the colour and the out of place broom. the selective focus is also spot on. happy christmas

For a moment when I first saw this image, there was a funny ambiguity about whether the broom handle is snapped off (which I assume it is), or is actually full-length, with the image distorted in a strange way.

comment by roberman at 11:07 PM (GMT) on 22 December, 2005

Great dof and nice colours (as usual...)

comment by Ron at 11:25 PM (GMT) on 22 December, 2005

"If seven maids, with seven mops, were to sweep for half a year; do you suppose, the walrus said, that they could get it clear?"

Not a chance! and a good thing too. Where would great subjects come from after the intrusion of all those maids.

comment by deceptive at 11:53 PM (GMT) on 22 December, 2005

Excellent! How did you get it to stand up like that?

comment by djn1 at 11:57 PM (GMT) on 22 December, 2005

Markus: the post-processing was mainly to do with balancing the foreground with the background and increasing the saturation.

deceptive: it was caked with wet sand; i.e. it was very bottom-heavy.

comment by Jem at 12:04 AM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

I really like this shot - but I don't know what about it appeals to me. Maybe it's the tones which it characteristic of a lot of your images Dave, possibly the DOF - or maybe the subject, that it's really quite out of place. Either way - great shot :)

comment by Geoff at 12:17 AM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

Now that's a classic Chromasia image! Beautiful. Excellent shot Dave. The shallow dof, combined with the saturation levels, the moody sky and the slight vignetting all combine wonderfully. It's almost as if it's stage lit. This one's one of my favourites of the recent weeks.

comment by Francesco at 12:33 AM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

wonderful atmosphere, and interesting subject

comment by Phil at 12:35 AM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

Quite a spooky picture. As was mentioned this does look like a very natural, dull day. Yet it has turned out wonderfully as always.

comment by roland at 12:54 AM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

Bad picture, as usual.

comment by dan culberson at 01:36 AM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

Gonna take a long time to sweeup up all that sand.

tra la la la... nice... tra la la la :))

comment by Noushin at 01:43 AM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

It's very interesting how it's standing up by itself. It's a very nice shot and color combination.

comment by Rick at 02:52 AM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

Did you have to get on you belly to take this show, or did you just hold the camera down low? The horizon is perfecly level for just holding down low, did you straighten it all in PS?

comment by Rob at 03:56 AM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

AAaahh....I do love the beach. Terrific DOF, saturation and composition. Happy Holidays,
Rob

comment by Simon C at 09:00 AM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

Lovely tone. Amazing how a little vignette can really emphasise and intensify a mood.

That's amazing.

Niec picture and good use of DOF. What is holding it up?

comment by Jesse at 01:07 PM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

I miss seeing shots of your kids. They are always good.

comment by Brian Perry at 02:42 PM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

This is an excellent shot. The illusion created by the angle and the broken handle is perfect. I was totally fooled until I read the comment above. I second the "stage lit" impression.

v. v. nice!

comment by Tristan -AVisualJournal.com at 03:12 PM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

i love the tonality, lighting and DOF. i'd like to see a person in this lighting rather than an old broom.

comment by RustyJ at 05:10 PM (GMT) on 23 December, 2005

I know why the broom is broken. The person sweeping went Mad Mad Mad trying to get all the sand up without getting any rocks!!!!

I do like this photo. I like the way the blues stand out from the brown/beige of the sand. Does that have to do with the 'saturation' talked about so often?

Thanks David and Merry Christmas to you and your family. Or I guess I should say Happy Christmas shouldn't I.

The broom looks really sad, and i like how you've darkened the outside. The focus is beautiful. I really like the colours!
