I couldn't resist putting up another shot of this abandoned TV, taken further back up the beach, pretty near to where we found it. And thanks for all the great comments on yesterday's version, they're much appreciated.

Simply stunning

Wonderful.

comment by Jorge Lesmes at 09:08 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

Great shot. I like this one more that yesterday´s. By the way, the two rock.

comment by Roger at 09:13 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

Cool conversion. Looks like snow almost. I do prefer the color one though.

comment by Shaun H at 09:21 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

you did properly dispose of the tv after...right? just kiddin. i would have probably left it too... on the sand at least. >:)

comment by djn1 at 09:22 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

Roger: it is snow, at least it's a thin dusting of snow over the sand.

comment by ROB at 09:22 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

Such difference to yesterday! That sand looks like salt flats in the foreground. It still amazes me you found a tele on the beach.

comment by Jem at 09:47 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

I certainly prefer the colour one - but I still think this is fantastic. It looks like it's sat on snow not a beach! :)

comment by Sean at 09:56 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

Wow. If I hadn't seen the image yesterday, and understanding the UK's battle with the weather, I would imagine this was a semi-frozen TV on a frozen lake, or snow-covered field.

comment by mark at 10:25 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

Very nice Dave :-) Yesterday's I prefer though, simply because I love what you do with colour.

comment by happysam at 10:58 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

theres no vision like snowvision

comment by drdubosc at 11:28 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

Prefer this one - IMO, 'realism' suits this subject.

comment by Budi at 11:34 PM (GMT) on 29 December, 2005

Back to 20D? And of course, I do like the 'bold' tone of B&W ;)

comment by Sergio de la Torre at 12:01 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

The sand looks like salt. I love this kind of dramatic BWs :D

comment by nuno f at 12:11 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Great b&w but the color version from yeaterday is much more appealing. I believe it's because of the tonal variations that the color photo have and that are not so visible in this monochromatic version. I see this one was taken with the 20D and not with the 1Ds from John. Now there's the proof that a good photographer can make fantastic shots no matter the model of the camera. : )

comment by Iron Flatline at 12:50 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

As the others said, it looks like frozen tundra, not beach.

comment by EOS Chaos at 01:15 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Both shots of this TV that you have posted are fantastic. I prefer the colour image because i just love the tones you have achieved there, but this image too has so much detail and shades it's really hard to pick one over the other. Excellent work as usual.
I must ask how you post process your images, in particular the family shots you posted a few days ago, they are just lovely to look at. While i am here, may i wish you and your family, a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year - [Chuks]

comment by Nikolai at 02:01 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

I think you need an antenna to be able to watch anything, no? Unless of course it's cable...

comment by Gary at 02:55 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

both shots are fantastic, I prefer this one as it seems more forlorn(and maybe its just my monitor, but I seem to be seeing a few dust spots)

comment by Budi at 03:06 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

I see the little spot around the upper left corner. Is it a node from your lense, Dave?

comment by Michael Brown at 03:33 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

So uniquely different, and I really enjoy the overall depth you have shown!

comment by Babu at 06:51 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Wonderful gray tones, love the sidelight. But the shadows cast by the TV and the sand/snow are not exactly in the same direction, or is it my vision?

comment by William Durham at 07:17 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Wow! Your work is truely inspiring. What a wonderful view you provide. Thanks much for sharing.

comment by Navin Harish at 07:20 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

This is quite similar to what John posted yesterday. I personally prefer the one you posted yesterday.

comment by pierre at 09:15 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Both shots are fantastic.

comment by djn1 at 10:18 AM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Gary/Budi: the dust on the top-left of the image (which I've now removed) is probably on my sensor. Thanks for pointing it out.

Everyone else: more later. I spent ten hours fitting a laminate floor yesterday and my fingers are refusing to type at the moment ;-)

comment by tobias at 02:49 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

The things you find on that beach. I swear you just visit the tip and drop the odd thing off. This reminds me of a television commercial, there is something rather slick about the image. Great shadows.

comment by Dan :: genestho.ca at 03:32 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Very cool. Love to see the same subject explored from different perspectives and approaches. Man, this little old TV sure seemed to move around (judging between your shots and those of John's)!

comment by MikesRightBrain at 05:29 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

I can't decide which version I like better, they are both wonderful. I think a funny picture would be one of you guys picking it up and moving it around! (I assume, of course, that you properly disposed of it after you were through taking pictures of it) ; - )

comment by PhilB at 08:06 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Another stunning, if very different shot to yesterdays. Both appealing in different ways. Any thoughts on a Best of 2005 entry for Photo Friday this week? ;-)

comment by djn1 at 09:33 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Thanks everyone.

PhilB: I'm not sure.

comment by Max at 09:49 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

It amazes me, seeing your photos, how much crap washes up on the beaches near you! TV's, old tires, brooms...what have I forgotten? Are there any abandoned cars? Frying pans? Vacuum cleaners?

comment by Marie R at 11:16 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

A chance landing on your site, while surfing earlier today, and a landing on the "color version" of this photo.

In french chance and luck are pretty much the same word.

Chances are yours is an URL I'm gonna be sharing with fellow photographers.

Chances are we'll enjoy coming here over and over again.

Today I'll just say: "thank you for the lesson in photography". But also: "thank you for sharing beauty, to such an extent, with us".
