UPDATE: If you're reading this, you're looking at the new version of chromasia on the new server. Currently, at least until the DNS change propagates, the url's all point to chromasia.pixyblog.com rather than chromasia.com, but I'll change these once the DNS has updated. In the meanwhile, I think everything's working ok, but please let me know if you come across any problems.

This is another shot from my walk with John the other afternoon, and while it's not as striking as the two of the TV, I do quite like it.

On another matter: I had hoped to export chromasia to its new server today, but couldn't manage to get the new installation to import the data file. I was using the MT interface to do this but am going to have to work out how to do it via a MySQL dump instead. Wish me luck.

And finally: this week's Photo Friday challenge is Best of 2005. What should I put up? I'm torn between SG-Blackpool and Space, but would welcome any other suggestions.

David, the shadow here makes the pic to me. I love it. BTW, go with SG Blackpool, in my opinion. That's one of my favorite Chromasia shots ever.

comment by matt at 09:39 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

great! doesnt quite rival yesterdays stunning shot though ;)

comment by Herbert at 09:55 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

David! Great shot!
I would like to know how do you do this dark blur around the image. Can you tell me?

comment by djn1 at 09:58 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Herbert: it's colourised with the Curves tool by tweaking the blue channel – dropping the curve in the highlights and boosting it in the shadows, like a backwards letter 's'.

comment by Michael at 10:37 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

This is a great shot, a very productive walk along the beach. For me, it is as good as the two previous. I Like the effect and thanks for the explanation. If I could pick your best of 2005, I'd have gone with SG-Blackpool.

comment by samgrover at 10:39 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Another cool shot. I'd vote for SG-Blackpool. Happy new year!

Dave, my personal fave is http://www.chromasia.com/iblog/archives/0504132117_clean.php

Dave:
I agree with Neil, DON'T LOOK UP is your best!

comment by Sam at 11:04 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Go with SG-Blackpool. The odd object makes it better food for thought, and the composition feels more accessible.

comment by Jen at 11:06 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

DON’T LOOK UP is my fave too. A happy and productive new year to you!

comment by Thinh Q. Thang at 11:33 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Hands down, you have to go w/ SG-Blackpool. Definately one of my all-time Chromasia favorites!

comment by drdubosc at 11:53 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

I love this one. On one hand it's very pure, with an abstract form that's so clean it's idealised. On the other hand it's brought back to earth by the hints at real life in the background. It's quieter, and not as obvious as the tv sets. If it was on my wall, I think it would stay there longer.

comment by nuno f at 11:53 PM (GMT) on 30 December, 2005

Fantastic shot! Reminds alot yesterday's photo.

About the choice between the two photos that you are undecided to put in the PhotoFriday challenge "Best of 2005", both photos are amazing and worth of being there, but I believe that SG-Blackpool is the best decision.

Good luck exporting Chromasia to its new server and a great 2006 full of amazing photographs. : )

Yet another stunning shot!

I haven’t left a comment for while, but I’m still a daily visitor. Thanks so much for sharing your craft—I’ve learned so much from Chromasia: not only from just looking, but also from your unfailing willingness to pass on tips and techniques—thanks! (And now somehow—since I started visiting—I’ve ended up getting a 350 D...)

As for favourite shots, SG-Blackpool is certainly one of my favourites, along with tangibly blue, but I think don’t look up #2 would get my vote for Best of Chromasia 2005.

Anyway, a very Happy New Year to you all!

comment by Partha at 12:19 AM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

A great photo to finish off the year. Thanks Dave for all the inspiration. For the photofriday submission, I think both are great selections. If I had to pick one, I'd probably go with space. Thanks again and have a great new year!

comment by Cindy Carver at 12:43 AM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

Hi Dave, I'm also a frequent visitor and eager-learner. Love your "eye" and appreciate all the sharing you do about the shots, the post-processing and even your thoughts about this or that!

I happen to really like this shot but think you should go with SG-Blackpool for the Photo Friday Best of 2005.

Thanks and best to you and the family in 2006!
Cindy

Space

comment by peter cohen at 02:52 AM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

WOW, has it been a YEAR I've been looking at your photos every day? I don't do ANYTHING for a year!!!

My own taste is that "Space" is a hundred times the photograph that "SG-Blackpool" is. And that "and the rain came down" is a hundred times the photograph that "Space" is. They are both ("rain" and "space") photographs that someone could look at a thousand years from now and be deeply drawn into just as if it was happening five minutes ago.
I am also VERY partial to "in my eyes". It is transcendant and truly magical, utterly mesmerizing... not only because you've caught the unsayable vastness/cosmicness of Rho in an almost impossibly clear way, but the entirety of the photo creates a kind of ethereal, unearthly quality that really showcases your many photographic/processing abilities/talents.

Anyway, thank you VERY much for keeping me interested, and much pleasured, and very much impressed for the past year.

comment by Sharla at 02:53 AM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

Today: Agreed, this is not quiiiite what the last two were. I wanted to say yesterday that I thought the original tv/water shot was much superior. I envisioned a second shot with the tv in a desolated, post-nuclear, post-reality-series setting. The second shot didn't do that for a couple reasons. Nowww, if today's shot had the tv instead of bucket and no playground in the distance, that would have been exactly my vision! For even the suggestion, I like today's a lot.

2005: I'd go with SG-Blackpool because it strikes the eye so intensely so quickly. It doesn't have the charm of Don't Look Up #2 or the mental ponderance of Space, but it does have the power to stop a slideshow, to get a longer look, and to easily out-dazzle the competion. Like writing and marketing, you gotta package/choose your subject for your audience and while I won't argue it's superior, I think it better tuned to the task.

A few other suggestions:
the piers end #5;
the first day;
cardboard beach.
All in all a great year for you, Best.

Like always, I love the TONE :)
I prefer for SPACE, that's very meditative photo :)
Merry New Year, Dave :)

SG-Blackpool is tops on my list. Space is also excellent, but SG-Blackpool is one that sticks with me longer.

comment by Martin Gottlieb at 06:49 AM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

Hi from LA,
I visit your site daily and you always satisfy and impress. Thanks, as so many have said, for the inspiration. You've gotten me to drag my camera around again.
As for your choices, bewteen the two, I agree that SG-Blackpool is more eye catching, and while a beautiful image, does not draw me in the way Space does. That said, the world is made of so much glitz that maybe pure image is better to a judge than the whole package that Space offers.
Just my opinion. I wish you a happy a new year and agan thanks for taking the time to share your eye.
Martin

Sorry to be a stick in the mud, but this shot totally underwhelms me. I don't think it is up to standard, to be honest. The tonal choice is awful and the subject boring. You have one day left in the year to restore my faith :)))))

As for what shot you should put up in the Friday Challenge, all I can say is I'm glad it's you that has to choose. You have a hard choice between about 30 images. Personally though I like Sombre & Don't Look Up II.

comment by Eric at 08:23 AM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

I think you and John had way too much fun on the beach with random objects. I like it though, always fun.

comment by GP at 12:01 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

Beautiful shadows.

comment by Bart at 12:02 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

SG-Blackpool, no doubt!

comment by John at 12:02 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

I like the shadows and composition.

B/W images from digital files still have a long way to go though. Yes - digital cameras have caught up with colour film, but no camera or software application like Photoshop can replicate what B/W film/paper can produce (yet), even with hrs at the computer post-processing. Your colour photos are simply stunning but the B/W images seem to lack that special tonal quality.

Have a great new year

comment by Donna McMahon at 01:34 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

It took a minute for your webpage to come-up but no other person has commented to say that they have experienced the same problem so that could just be me.

I go for space just because it's a much more emotional photograph.

Happy New Year to you and yours. xx

comment by Fellow Eskimo at 02:39 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

I really liked space...seems alot more appealing to me. I was thrown off for a minute at the new domain name!

comment by djn1 at 03:10 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

Fellow Eskimo: the 'chromasia.pixyblog' thing is temporary. As soon as the DNS change propagates things will be back to normal.

comment by Carlo at 04:00 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

Perhaps it's just me but I see no pictures at all...

comment by Michael Brown at 05:03 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

Love the lighting in this image. So simple and effective in its composition, ... lighting is killer!

comment by Brian at 06:55 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

Like Carlo, I'm afraid I can't see any of the pictures at the moment - they just don't appear in Firefox, and show as broken links in IE.
I suspect that the stylesheet that's associated with the comments window is being lost too, for the format looks very different from usual.

comment by djn1 at 07:03 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

Sorry some of you can't see the images. I can't work out why this would be the case but suspect that when the DNS changes have fully propagated this should sort itself out.

comment by Rob at 07:40 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005

FYI-Looks fine in my Firefox.

comment by owen at 08:15 PM (GMT) on 31 December, 2005
