Apologies for the lateness of today's entry, but I was stuck at work till around 8pm and then found that this shot took way longer to get right than I anticipated.

Some of you will be familiar with this style/type of shot, but as some of you may not have seen it before I'll hold off explaining until later.

Incredible shot. Nice Duotone.

comment by Andrew at 01:05 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

really great shot. i love how basic the composition is.

comment by Joe P at 01:06 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

Very cool, but then, your stuff generally is. I haven't put it together yet, but it seems like the longer time spent getting it right was worth it.

comment by nuno f at 01:14 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

I know this style very well and have seen great compositions using this technique. But to be honest, none of the similar shots that I saw can match this one. Every detail is amazing and in perfect balance. Great choice of cropping.

comment by Tess McElholm at 01:15 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

What is it David?

Is this what you do, leave us in suspense?!

So it is.

Come on Tyrone.

comment by Bartek at 01:21 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

It is impressive in its use of color and shape.

comment by bob at 01:30 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

This is a very beautiful shot, really impressive. How could you do such a job? I confess I love spiral, its kinda mysterious to me.

comment by Neil at 01:33 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

I've tried shooting smoke myself and have seen other peoples' smoke shots too, but I've not seen a spiral like this before, so I have to admit, I'm impressed by this shot!! Nice work

comment by Benji at 01:39 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

What is that? Its awesome is what it is.

Please inform us on how to produce such a lovely image. Good choice of colors (if you photoshoped them of course).

comment by Sue at 01:40 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

WOAH. That's amazing.

comment by Robert at 02:05 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

Beautiful. Is it done like these (don't click the link if you don't want a spoiler!)? I agree that this is perhaps the most amazing of those pictures, if indeed it is one.

comment by Michael Brown at 02:07 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

This image stayed up on the screen for about 5 minutes.
A wonderful study!!

comment by djn1 at 02:10 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

Robert: no, it's done like these, following the instructions on this page. Again, don't click if you don't want a spoiler ;-)

comment by Phil at 03:01 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

comment by Gary at 03:04 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

Hello David,
your site has finally propagated to Naperville, Illinois, just in time to catch this great shot. I just learned how to do this w/ black background, now I know how to do it with white:)

comment by joe holmes at 03:11 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

djn -- fantastically sharp and yet ethereal! or whatever. It's a beautiful image, and that color is wonderful. I can usually figure out how shots are made but this one has me stumped. I'm going to click on the links above and find out.

comment by Parker at 03:30 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

I checked out the links: very, very cool. So how was the spiral effect achieved? You have remarkable control over your smoke, as odd of a compliment as that might be.

comment by Andrew at 03:52 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

This is amazing. Looks a lot like the icon for Adobe Bridge.

comment by Rob at 03:59 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

Yes I have seen some of this technic some where else, never here. Is nice to see the first of this kind of image in Chromasia. I kind of know how it is done but I haven't try my self, More information would be appreciated so we can give it a try :) Love the color you choose for this one. ;)

Brilliant Shot.

The explaination on the site you linked us to is rather vauge! Any chance you could fully enlighten us (n.p.i) DJN?

comment by EOS Chaos at 11:49 AM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

Excellent shot! I really like these smoke images but am yet to give it a try. I like this a lot for the colour and the composition, but most of all because the shape the smoke has created is not as random as some of the others i have seen. It still looks very delicate but there is a definite, spiral- like shape formed by the smoke, which i think is really special. There must be some sort of method to caox the smoke into creating more interesting patterns, or is it all down to trial and error. All the same, i do like this a lot. - [Chuks]

Great work.

Thank you.

I visited the site that you had linked in your comment, and I'm afraid to say, felt those photos were better executed than this post. With this post, you were able to capture the inherently graceful (but obscure) behavior of smoke. And although, this photo was beautiful, it was boring nonetheless. Perhaps because, I did not perceive the supposed "chaos."

However, I mainly commented to thank you for opening my eyes to yet another interesting niche and to continue to inspire new techniques to practice. So thanks

comment by djn1 at 07:43 PM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

Thanks everyone, and I'll explain a bit more about this shot on tomorrow's entry.

comment by Bruce at 09:23 PM (GMT) on 12 January, 2006

Absolutely stunning. I've been meaning to try something like this before but after experiencing the frustration of trying to capture a water drop, I'm sure this would be equally difficult! Love your work. Keep it up!

What did you use as a background? And did you use flash? I always find that when I try to shoot this, I light up the background and it doesnt look as good.
