This is another shot taken yesterday afternoon, facing south along the sand dunes at Blackpool's south shore.

On another matter: I’m really pleased to be able to tell you that chromasia has been nominate as one of the finalists in the 'Best Photography of a Weblog' category of the 2006 bloggies alongside FlickrBlog, The Snowsuit Effort, A Walk through Durham Township and photojunkie. I enjoy the way that the people in the distance add a bit of happiness to such a dreary shot

comment by Victor at 07:27 PM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006

looks like the kid is going to be swallowed by the weed sea. great atmosphere, it looks like a comic in a way.

comment by Mats at 07:51 PM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006

This one is really good. It has a nice mood. Great timing on that skateboarder.

comment by nuno f at 08:26 PM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006

Beautiful shot! The 2x1 crop resulted in a natural composition with all it's elements well placed. The tonality is also fantastic.

On a side nore, congratulations for the Bloggies 2006 nomination. : )

I specially like the kid jumped in the air.

comment by m at 08:27 PM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006

Blackpudlians seem to enjoy jumping of heights, I recall a previous chromasia shot of this phenomenon.

Really love this Dave. It has that 'feel' which I try and acieve. Obviously not your usual chromasia style photo but a nice departure, and you captured the gloomy feel of the day well.

I think the human subject makes the photo work and without it it would not have the same impact.

Nicely done.

reminds me about snowboarding this past weekend...nice shot djn

comment by JD at 10:11 PM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006

Great, nice dreamy atmosphere. Did you say this was shot from the cars window?? was it moving if so??

Its amazing how many people are fed up today or don't know what to do with themselves (reference to John Washingtons shot)!
Today has been announced as the most depressing day of the year afterall!
And I was just wondering if your title references this or if its just about the teenage social life and the usual excuse?

comment by Jamey at 10:49 PM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006

You say it was a dreary day, yet you've still managed to get a shutter speed of 1/640.

Like most of us, I go out pretty much every day taking photos and I've never had the camera (20D) offer a shutter speed that high on a cloudy day. Not at ISO 100, anyway.

Do you deliberately underexpose your shots to get a higher speed? Looking at the exposure bias info, it would seem not.

comment by Fellow Eskimo at 11:45 PM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006

I like this shot much better than yesterdays, I love the distant feel of the skateboarders...and the tinting. Congrats on your nomination.

Hi Dave,

Beautiful urbanscape shot...nice sepia effect! I've been seeing your photos for a while now! I loved your photos you made from your trip to Asia! Anyway, I am torn as you may have been once...I am not sure which system to invest in!!! I have been using a Nikon FA circa 1983, but practically I wonder if I'm selling myself short since most portrait work is done in the Canon system! Is this true? It seems more of a market for portrait photographers(Canon) in New Jersey. I'd appreciate your insight!

amazing.

did the guy actuall jump down? hehe.

comment by Mike at 01:26 AM (GMT) on 24 January, 2006

i like it a lot. i live in oklahoma so all those weeds make the ground look alien to me... very neat shot.

Congratulations on being nominated! Nice photo. I really like the tint and motion of the grass.

comment by Robert #2 at 03:07 AM (GMT) on 24 January, 2006

The partially obscured (fog?) town is a great backdrop for the kids and the dunes in front. I can hear the wind -- it's a great, moody shot. Congratulations on your nomination.

Well titled. Congratulations on your nomination and good luck.

comment by Navin Harish at 11:32 AM (GMT) on 24 January, 2006

The sepia tint in this image makes it look like a desert, so much so that I can smell the dust and a feeling of choking on it while I look at this image. The guy jumping off is interesting

comment by SteveO at 11:55 AM (GMT) on 24 January, 2006

I like this shot a lot, it has a really good moody feel to it, the guy jumping off the dune really makes this shot for me.

comment by CurlyBoy at 12:11 PM (GMT) on 24 January, 2006

Love the shot.

comment by djn1 at 12:58 PM (GMT) on 24 January, 2006

Thanks everyone.

Mats: it's not a skateboarder, he was just jumping off the dunes.

nuno (and everyone else): thanks :-)

m: yep, except this guy is a bit more photogenic ;-)

John: no, it wouldn't have worked without the people in the shot. I was watching them for about five minutes, and just happened to have a shot composed as he jumped.

JD: no, this was taken from one of the sand dunes, yesterday's shot, and the one I'm thinking about putting up tomorrow were taken from a car.

Jamey: it was dreary in the sense that the light was flat, but it was quite bright. Even on dull days there's a hell of a lot of light around as you also get quite a bit of light reflected off the sea.

Felipe: I suspect that it doesn't make a great deal of difference if you go for Canon or Nikon, both produce good cameras and good lenses. Personally, I've bought into a Canon system, so won't be changing, but either will do a good job.

comment by Ellie at 01:20 PM (GMT) on 24 January, 2006

Lovely composition, i like the contrast of the children playing against the bleak skyline. however, i actually prefer yesterdays.

Wow, what a capture! What in the word are those folks doing? I love the story I can tell from this shot. Not to mention the great finish to the shot. Well done. Oh, and you've got my vote!! ;)

C'est simplement magnifique (comme d'habitude) ! There's nothing else to say.

comment by Richard at 03:57 PM (GMT) on 24 January, 2006

Technically it's a great shot. The composition is perfect, the colour tones and the mist add a fantastic quality to the photo. But it's the story that makes it: I'm pulled into the image, and I can feel the boredom and aimlessness that the kids are feeling. I'm sure everyone who grew up in the suburbs has experienced this feeling before, wandering around with no plans and bored on a Sunday afternoon. Jumping off the dunes seemed like the perfect way to kill a few hours.

comment by MikesRightBrain at 05:07 PM (GMT) on 24 January, 2006

Wonderful shot. I thought it was a slow-shutter speed by theblur in the dune grass, but the frozen motion (and your exif) says it isn't. Nice job and congrats on the nomination. I will be voting for you.

I don't find that the day depicted here is depressing. I find atmosphere and softness in this scene visually beautiful. I live in Australia where the air is very clear and the sun and sky are intense. It is not often that a soft misty vista can be found. I also agree that the photo would not have worked anywhere near as well without the boys. I like the punctuations created by the lamp posts, which echo each other, and the chorus of poles beyond the foreground hill. Outstanding shot.
