John came over for a couple of hours this afternoon and we went down to St. Annes (and took a load of crap shots in terrible light), drove back to the sand dunes at Blackpool's South Shore (and took mostly a load of crap shots, in mostly terrible light), then drove back home. As John was driving today I sat taking shots through the car window as we drove along the seafront and ended up with two shots that I'm reasonably happy with (and a shed load of crap ones); this one, and another that I'll put up on Tuesday (that's significantly more interesting, at least in my opinion).
Oh, and my apologies for yesterday's shot. I should have realised that the discussion would be in danger of degenerating into a political argument (of sorts). Anyway, just so nobody else is tempted to berate those who have already commented, I've disabled comments on that entry ... at least for the time being.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about this one. Nice light and colour I suppose. I'm not sure really what you see in it though. I suppose I'm not a big fan of blurry shots....
comment byFellow Eskimo at 10:33 PM (GMT) on 22 January, 2006
I wish the man was in more focus...everything being so blurry makes it hard to focus on anything, and its quite distracting. Though I guess it could be seen as an artistic motion blur?
comment byJem at 10:38 PM (GMT) on 22 January, 2006
I really like the simplicity of this shot - with waves of colour. The guys orange/red jacket obviously stands out from the surroundings and makes a perfect subject. This shot reminds me of the work i've seen of Dominic Pote :)

Sorry if yesterday's image is off limits but it looks like Saddam and Bush have made up. Good lads, well done kids.

David, nice protection from hotlinking, but there's a problem under firefox (under IE, everything is ok) in comment window... small thumb is replaced by hotlinking info (image).

Having enjoyed and admired much of the photography on this site, I have to say that I'm not struck on this. I don't mind blur if there is enough content to support it, but I don't think there is enough content to support it here.
I find the light blue swathe at the bottom very dominant, it keeps drawing my eye away from the person, and it irritates me as I've no idea what it is!
But, hey I know what a crappy light sort of day is like, so don't take it personally :)
comment byRobert #2 at 11:30 PM (GMT) on 22 January, 2006
Interesting, but doesn't sit well. I like how the orange coat stands out against the sort of Nordic, wintery background. I think soft focus might have worked better and still conveyed the stark, cold mood of the photo.
Just to chime in, I'm running firefox 1.5 and the comment window is OK.

Mike, Robert, everyone else: no, this isn't the greatest shot I've put up, but having spent an afternoon coming up with total crap it was just a relief to get anything half-way decent to post. Also, I don't have any free time tomorrow so needed to get at least two shots today. Alternatively, I guess I could not put anything up for a day, but I hate doing that. I'd much rather post the best of a bad job than nothing at all.
comment byMark at 12:04 AM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006
I enjoy this shot, as it isn't as if we have not seen razor sharp images everywhere. Just like life, things aren't always so clearly in focus. This is a dreamlike shot that I certainly enjoy.

I could have easily taken this exact shot, and I'm in Victoria Canada. The railing by the ocean walkway is identical to one on Dallas Road here. Even the walker is identical to a woman I know named Carol. Odd and amazing.

I'm not sure about this image. Kind of made me dizzy when I looked at it. Personally, I feel that photos shouldn't make you dizzy. Less blurriness would have been better. Though, I do like the colors and tone of the overall image.
comment bydjn1 at 10:12 AM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006
gina (and everyone else): I guess the thing about this type of motion-blur shot is that they're inherently unpredictable and I guess I'm still at the stage of trying to work out what works and what doesn't. I'll be putting another one up on Tuesday, which has quite a different feel to this one, but I suspect that it might also make you dizzy ;-)
comment bySteve at 10:47 AM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006
Never posted a comment here, normally lurk around just enjoying the pics, but am compelled to stick up for this one! I really like it, just as a soft (relaxing?) palette it works for me, I think people get too hung up on (in-focus) form sometimes?
comment byowen at 12:54 PM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006
I like this for the fact that it seems to have been done 'in-camera' rather than is PS, although I am sure it had some PS work also. I particularly like the 'swoosh' at the bottom of the pic - this could almost be a Nike ad.
Interesting shot, not sure that it does anything for me but make me notious. The motion blur is just a little too much without detail. BUT I do recognize those days where you shoot, you shoot, you shoot, and have nothing much to show for it. Do you always post even though you haven't found "that image"?
comment byBartek at 04:51 PM (GMT) on 23 January, 2006
I like it. It has a kind of dreamy feel to it. The reds and blues work really well together. The blur is great, too.

You shouldn't be apologizing, Dave. This is a neat shot. The orange jacket and the light blue tones make it interesting. Good eye for capturing this.

I'd love to see this shot without the blur (or anywhere near as much blur, at least). The single person, especially in such a bright color (comparatively) makes me want to focus on them ... but I can't, which annoys me. As one of my old professors said about one of my first projects ... "good concept, not-so-good execution".
comment bydjn1 at 02:33 AM (GMT) on 24 January, 2006
Thanks everyone, and I'm tempted to agree that this one didn't quite work. It's ok, but it's not great. More practice required ;-)
