First of all: thanks for all the great comments on yesterday's entry. As always, they're much appreciated.

Today though, I didn't manage to get out, so here's a shot I took of John on one of our wanders around Blackpool. He's put up quite a few of me in the past, so I thought it was about time that I got my own back ;-)

The best portraits in my opinion are not only composed with the subject in mind but also use the background effectively as well as the subjects actions.

This photo does all three.

Awesome candid shot that can just as well be argued to have been staged.

Nice portrait. And that's what he gets :) haha

A photo of the Master himself - was this taken at the point when I was teaching you about motion blur in camera, or was it when I was allowing you to take a shot that I had discovered first.

Anyway - don't worry yourself - I have plenty of you in reserve - I'm just saving them for a rainy day.

;-)

LOL - a nice portait. John looks quite pensive. The mural makes a lovely backdrop. I think that dolphin is about to land of his head.

so is it war then? David vs John? Will we be seeing any compromising shots? lol! =)

I'm wondering if this is a shot which is only interesting for those who are involved (you and john).
I would like to have seen a smaller DoF which might have helped this picture.
Subject aside - the composition works.

Hey John, the eternal photographic marathons companion, nice to meet you here!
You doubtless have to spend good moments during these excursions. A duet which has to share its knowledge, its experiments.
Good continuation for both!

My, what a big lense you have there John!

The man himself, deep in thought. And speaking of which, a lot of thought obviously went into this shot - the background is perfect! Everything is positioned well, and great colours everywhere.

That's a nice portrait for a photographer.

Hi, John! What a big camera and lens you got there :) I agree. Photos of our photography companion can be useful in rainy days LOL.

Nice photo. And that's one nice and cheerful dolphin on the back of John's head.

i'm inclined to believe that John, with his photographer's instinct, placed himself there to be "portraited". :)

Nice photo! The 70-200mm f4L is a really sharp lens. Is that a Canon 5D that John has there?

comment by djn1 at 11:17 PM (GMT) on 28 January, 2006

Paul: no, it's either his 1Ds or his D60.

comment by mukka at 01:14 AM (GMT) on 29 January, 2006

Crazy Canon users and their ugly white lenses..

I love the background you have chosen to take this shot against. Nice picture and nice equipment.
