If I had a 'thinking out loud' category, I guess this shot would be in it. It was taken a couple of weeks ago, as part of a series of shots from a bridge. What drew me to the scene was the chewing gum stuck to the tarmac, and I have no idea as to quite why there was so much of it in this location, but I thought it provided an interesting backdrop to the people wandering by below. Anyway, this is one of those shots where I wasn't sure exactly what it was that I was after, so I'm not too sure what to make of it. It's probably a vantage point I'll return to at some point and give it another go.
Oh, and my wife's comment on this one was " what it it? A light switch?" ... so either she's gone mad or I've totally misjudged how this one will be perceived ;-)

You could call it Chewing Gum Constellation. :)

Or maybe the 'wrigley cluster' ;-)

Is that really chewing gum?! Good grief. It looks more like splatters of white paint.
comment by m at 09:19 PM (GMT) on 28 January, 2006
Initially it looked v macro. but it soon became spook or spy like.

When I first saw it, I thought he was walking through a seagull target range. Wonder what's in the bulky briefcase -- you have the private detective angle going in this one.
comment by Jen at 09:40 PM (GMT) on 28 January, 2006
Strange but it works for me! On the why here (gum) front – there is a foot path near us with about a metre square that is splattered?! If I had to guess - I’d say the same moron walks that way every day and by the time he gets to that particular spot it’s lost its flavour. Alternatively it could be someone’s idea of pavement art!

Striking in an advertising shot sort of way. The new spring luggage collection from Chromasia.....
comment bytrob at 10:45 PM (GMT) on 28 January, 2006
I like this one a lot, the angle of the shot is very important, and the processing which makes the gum jump out and the person into a silhouette works perfectly.

Looks like a light switch to me!...
...my wife is always right.. isn't yours? ;-)
p.s. I like the purple colour shift

Like the shot, but feel it's driven too far towards the merely graphic by the colour shift, losing tension. I agree with the advertising remark, and think I'd be more excited if the picture hovered somewhere between this, and the grisly reality.

I love purple...its cool how just one of his legs is in focus and the rest is in motion...its nice. I do like it.

no, no, Robert #2, the private detective would be carrying a fake rock...
Dave, I really like the color here. I'd hate to have to make my way through that mess!

At first glance I thought this was someone walking through an airport, what with the suitcase and grotty carpet.
I see it now though.

oh, come on! when i saw it i thought that the chewing gum is snow! and i thought to myself: "wow, those snowflakes are really beautiful" :D

looks like a Gum Constellation!
if u don't take a explanation, there would no one know its gum!
comment bymatt at 03:21 PM (GMT) on 29 January, 2006
The vantage point is quite nice. The gum looks like fallen flower petals, but it is the striking purple/blue backdrop agains the black subject that makes this so striking.

Cool shot, perfect speed on the shutter for the subtle motion blur.

Very mysterious. If you didn't say what the backround was I don't think i would have ever guessed. I liek the element of teh person carrying the large suitcase also, adds alot of personality to the shot

Yes, I love the gum attack in this shot as well. Also the headless passer.
comment by Lynn at 07:21 PM (GMT) on 29 January, 2006
I didn't realise it was chewing gum on the tarmac, but a light switch is a little far from my first thoughts when I saw it. Looks like an excellent film still. Definitely a keeper.
comment by Sharla at 08:43 PM (GMT) on 29 January, 2006
This really is a great shot. I particularly like the compostion. There is a fan affect from tracks or something in the pavement. The person and briefcase seem angled perfectly if the pattern is extended. The person is comfortably placed, following the rule of thirds.
But how to make it unique and interesting? Those random white blogs of snow or fluff or something (What?! it's gum!) are very curious. The person shows that the angle is unusual and that always creates a more interesting shot.
A marketing shot? Eh, maybe, but certainly not for gum!
