As we head towards spring, one of my regrets is that I don't seem to have managed to get a great deal of shots of the winter landscape that I'm happy with, and this one is no exception. Maybe it's just that I don't like the winter light – and that I'm trying to make these winter beach scenes something that they're not – or maybe it's something else, I don't know. Anyway, all that aside, I'm putting this one up as I do like the warmth of the evening light on the ironwork in the foreground, and I'm happy with the composition, it's just that there feels to be something missing.

Lovely. Great light and colours. Did you increase the saturation at all or is that just how it was ? The composition works nicely for me too.
comment byRobert #2 at 06:21 PM (GMT) on 4 February, 2006
I like the texture; I'm not sure what might be missing. Maybe you feel that you need something defining on the rusty piling to be the center of interest (like the bolt on wood a few days back).

Sorry for a second post - I clicked "post" by mistake.
I like how the top of the second post is level with the horizon-- it's holding up the sky.

I have no idea what your on about with something being missing from this shot its fine and dandy.
I'm literally amazed at all the different things there seems to be to photgraph where you are. I suppose it does have something to do with your eye for the shot too.
Sheffield (where i live) is pretty dismal for any focal point at all, but that doesn't stop me trying to capture it...
I think where you live does affect you photographs to some extent (eg you have lots of beach shots).
But do you think that you would ever get bored of these types of shots???
I don't think I would :-D

Perhaps a little more context. Maybe not quite as close. Don't know, I still like it.

I've just recently discovered your blog and I have been completely amazed. You have an incredible talent with use of color and composition.
Your work is inspiring.

I understand what you mean, David. Somehow, the winter landscape and light conditions aren't the best for photography. I don't want to say that it is not good to shoot at winter. It's perfectly possible to make great photography during this time of the year. Here where I live, winter is very dull and I have to drive to somewhere else if I want to capture something more interesting.
About today's shot, I don't know why you say that there is something missing. Is all there... good composition, full of color, lots of details and very pleasing to the eyes.
comment byjasonspix at 07:29 PM (GMT) on 4 February, 2006
Great detail. Rusty things always make good subjects.
comment byPaul Woolrich at 07:38 PM (GMT) on 4 February, 2006
The evening light shining on this rusty post looks really nice. I agree about how hard winter can be to get shots your happy with. The problem is English weather, at least in other countries you can photograph snowey scenes.
comment bygaryx at 07:54 PM (GMT) on 4 February, 2006
Personally, if I wanted to say winter then I would have been inclined to make this composition colder, more miserable and barren.
comment bygaryx at 07:59 PM (GMT) on 4 February, 2006
Sorry DJN I posted before I had finished. I was going to say maybe zooming out a bit and shooting in b&w?
comment byAdrian Hudson at 08:24 PM (GMT) on 4 February, 2006
Dave,
I think your dissatisfaction with this shot is due to the composition. The viewer perceives that what they take to be a line of metal posts (although there are only two, the fact that this is a beach - its a safe bet it is a line). The eye therefore tries to follow the line of posts... the overused phrase "the eye is led into the image" comes to mind. The only problem is that there is notihing to be led to. The out of focus distance does not help. The in focus post is very interesting but not enough to hold the eye and prevent the "leading" into the distance and searching for the main subject.
My eyes won't rest in this image. It's quite unnerving.
Regards...

Adrian: I think you're partially right, in the sense that it would probably have been better had the second post been at least partially above the horizon.
garyx: I think you've hit the nail on the head, well, kind of. I guess the problem is that I didn't want to say winter, but probably should have done, and I guess this is what I was saying in my description of this one; i.e. that I'm attempting to portray the scene in a way that isn't entirely sympathetic to the circumstances.

Another photographer's image. Light, texture and colour. But not an easy one for a viewer. Adrian is right. Nowhere for the eye to rest. Yet for a restless image, an oddly empty one. It looks like it is trying to say something more than a stroll on the beach in the evening, but, to me anyway, is mute.

Wonderful image. I really like the mix of the left-to-right horizon with top-to-bottom rusty posts with a few other random rocks and debris that don't interrupt those nice lines.
Is there a third rusty post somewhere that gives it more of that repeating-post kind of look? Just wondering if the addition of a third vector to drag your eyes around the image would help it or hurt it. Don't know. Either way, you've got a great shot here. Nice work!

I have to say, I'm feeling a little relieved that you're not happy with the winter light, either. I've been having some difficulties as well. Or maybe it's just that I'm out more in the summer, with more photographic opportunities. That said, I'm loving the colors in this one, and the way the post in the background is an unfocused mirror image, giving it an impression of depth. Very nice.
