Firstly, thanks for all the comments on yesterday's shot: they were much appreciated, especially as it took a lot more work than usual to work it up into something worth posting.
Today's, on the other hand, was much simpler to produce, and is one of several shots I took today at the 'fuse units', some purpose built 'workspaces for the creative industries' in Bolton (the town where I work). This is probably the only one I'll post on chromasia and is a shot of a couple of books; one about Banksy's art, and another on letterhead and logo design. What I wanted to do was to photograph them as I found them, one leaning against the end of the bookcase, the other partially open and standing in the middle, and on the whole I'm pretty much pleased with how it turned out (despite the fact, or maybe because of the fact, that it's not immediately apparent that this is just a shot of two books). Anyway, as always, your thoughts are appreciated.

Hi,
Very minimalistic. The composition works very well. The text in the far right could have been avoided.

very crisp image. the focusing is perfect. had you focused elswhere, or maybe even changed the DOF a bit the image would not have been as appealing. I like the use of color on the pages while everything else is monochrome. Even the book in the background "fits" as it looks as if the man on the cover is holding up the weight of the book in the foreground.
Nice shot!
comment bydjn1 at 09:29 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2006
Martin: yep, I could have either avoided the text, or cropped it out later, but I like the way it a) adds some detail to what would otherwise be an empty space, and b) mirrors the text on the other cover.
comment byJD at 09:32 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2006
despite its simplicity this definitally works.
I'm not too sure about what its trying to say if it is trying to say anything at all (suppose stuff about design and art mimicking art??).
Nice but slightly obvious use of a shallow DOF.
The partial colouring works well (im presuming that the shelf wasn't gray). I seem to get into the habit of using this all too often).
Is the "rockport" on the right hand side another book????
All in all a great image ;)

banksy wall and piece! awesome book!
comment bydjn1 at 09:36 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2006
JD: nope, it's not trying to say anything much. As for the rockport on the far right: no, it's printed inside the back cover of the same book.
comment by Geoff at 09:49 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2006
Excellent. When I first looked at it, I saw a different scale and thought I was looking at an entrance to en art exhibition. (The entrance being between the two books, with the Banksy book being some sort of wall poster and the 9 being the establishments street facade. I was unsure what the pages of the second book were - maybe laminated posters.)
But it was about there I read the comments. Just two books eh...
Nice work Dave.
comment bybmoll at 10:06 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2006
The quality of work is excellent, but you could have used a lower aperture, just to increase DOF and make the heavily blurred areas more visible.
I typed "excellent as usual" but then changed to avoid any opinions I am a fanatic or so. By now, let's say I am an enthusiast;). Cheers.
comment bymark at 10:48 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2006
Funnily enough I immediately saw 2 books and, personally, I think think the text on the far right is a key element to the image, along with the coloured pages.
I think this is absolutely superb Dave and I have to say it's a firm favourite...everything just seems to balance perfectly for my eye with this.
comment by Geoff at 11:09 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2006
I had the black theme on. I think that has helped the illusion. With white, it only looks like two books :)

Cool! I love the contrast of the black book and the white pages! Great Photo!

Nice and honest thought of trying to shoot the books without moving them. I like that you kept the letters in the right side;they balance the image. As you left the colours in the front book I would leave some colour(maybe disaturated but not completely off) in the rest of the image and especially in the background and the shelf. Anyway the photo works fine and I really love Banksy
comment byRobert at 12:32 AM (GMT) on 17 February, 2006
So, umm, yeah, don't you hate it when everyone else beats you to the comments? Nothing much to say except the colored pages really make the shot for me. If I can persuade you by gently asking, can we see one of the other ones?

Nice original shot. I might have cropped out the second rockport on the right side, it seems to distract from the left side of the frame.

Great shot, love the sharp, colourful verticals. I find myself wondering what the typeface is on the book it looks cool.

Hmmm, sorry folks, doesn't do anything for me - but i guess that’s why we're all individuals! :) I guess I'd rather look at an image that provokes deep thought in either how / why it was taken or simply an engaging subject. To me, this has neither.

Wall and Piece, you like him too? He has just done a set of postcards of graffitied (spelt right) oil paintngs, his site is cool also, Banksy.co.uk
Not sure if there is a little too much book in the foreground maybe. I suppose, the messages, for want of a better phrase, is a little lost.
Hmmm, I don't know, quite like all the lines of the coloured pages. Perhaps it's one of those images you just have to work on.

Says to me "Urban Legend v Urban Myth". Now, this is an image that works well in terms of conflicting focal distances (at both visual and metaphorical levels). And the candy stripes of colour against the matt black work well ...drawing you in to want to open the book. I can honestly say I would have this on my wall :)
