This was taken last September when I was down in London at the Europe Photobloggers meetup, and the reason I'm putting it up now (other than the fact that I don't have anything else, which is true, but not overly significant) is that I've returned to this shot again and again, and have post-processed it so many times that I now know this woman's feet better than my own.

What brings me back to this one, in addition to what drew me visually to the shot in the first place, is that it was one of the first times that I felt truly comfortable approaching a stranger. I asked her "can I take a picture of your feet?", explained why, and in a rather bemused way she said yes. And I guess the lesson, for me at least, was that if I see somebody I'd like to photograph I should just ask them. Chances are the worst that would happen would be that somebody would say no.

Anyway, if I don't put this up I'll just end up stuck in this loop of post-processing it every fortnight or so and, given that this is about version 15, I'm getting frustrated that I can't produce a version that I'm entirely happy with. This one's ok – not quite what I was after – but, whatever, here it is.

Interesting, but i'm not a big fan of feet them make me sick!

comment by joe_ob at 10:10 PM (GMT) on 2 March, 2006

I like the composition and I can see why they were worth photographing, but not sure about the colours, it looks a little overdone to me.

comment by sistereden at 10:12 PM (GMT) on 2 March, 2006

First to comment, a privilege ! This pic is a kind of metaphore (metaphora in greek means "transport", and it is question of traffic). I can also say, the shoe personnalize the feet so the face of their owner is not important. At last, I like the contrast, crossing the rough and the civilized.

comment by kaarel at 10:15 PM (GMT) on 2 March, 2006

i like post process. very nicely composed too.

comment by djn1 at 10:15 PM (GMT) on 2 March, 2006

Lee: lol :-)

joe_ob: the colours are overdone. Well, they are and they're not. Had I brought her feet up to the same level as the sandals and her nails it would have looked more balanced – but I didn't want to present it that way.

sisterden: the title, when I prepared this one, was to do with the colour scheme (traffic lights – red(ish), amber(ish) and a rather acidic green), but I like your interpretation better.

kaarel: thanks.

David I actually like this. Why? Because it's different from your normal stuff. It adds a varying slant in that it's dark but at the same time has your colour signature on it. Questions keep flying around as I look at this shot. Why such colour? What's with the green and the purple? Then you stand on a yellow line. All so interesting all so weird but all so cool.

Dave I really like this shot!

I like this .. it's interesting.... I caught the stoplight color scheme the second I saw it... and the 2x1 crop definately brought out the feet and the diagonal composition... another note I attempted my first run at HDR.. i'd like to know what you think or what anyone thinks really http://www.brettadmire.com

comment by Luisa at 10:49 PM (GMT) on 2 March, 2006

I like the colours, they are shocking, and it's obvious they have to be overdone, the composition is stunning.

bright, bright tootsies!

I'm visitng your site for the first time... You are a great photographer! I will definitely be back to see more of your work. It's all amazing!

comment by Patrick at 10:58 PM (GMT) on 2 March, 2006

I like this!!! The colors overdone; maybe. A bit unnatural looking, that to. The first thought that came to my mind when I saw the image was that it was a hand colored black and white photograph. The colors really have that appearance to me. Any one else agree? And being one who sold many hand colored images in prior years I have a affinity for them.

comment by nuno f at 11:11 PM (GMT) on 2 March, 2006

And I'm glad you've posted. I love the way the colors are mixed. Don't know why, but the tonality and contrast reminds me of an HDR photo.

comment by john at 11:15 PM (GMT) on 2 March, 2006

I haven't met a woman who likes her feet, let alone one who would allow a stranger to make a permanent record of them and publish them on the internet, so kudos there. :-)

comment by Joao at 11:17 PM (GMT) on 2 March, 2006

Love this picture!
I understand that it´s more confortable to take a picture to someone who alows it. But it depends of what kind of photo you want. Feet dont have expression... If you want to stop the clock and catch a natural moment with your camera, you can´t interfere whit the subject.

I keep coming back to this one too. It doesn't strike me as a typical Chromasia shot (whatever that may be) but I like the sharp tonality. I only wish the texture of the street was more apparent.

comment by Gazdog at 12:06 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

I think the post processing makes the shot. I got the new Alien Skin film software and it's great fun to play with. The one thing it did was bring me back to how much film was manipulated. I think people forget this now we are 90% digital. They did some wild things with film and this shot to me represents that philosophy.

comment by Robert at 12:19 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

I saw the shoes aand toenail polish as this woman's way to brighten up a drab day. It might not work 100%, but she's trying.

The color treatment with the strong colors on the shoes and nails, but greyish flesh, shows the eventual futility of her attempt.

I may be overthinking this.

comment by Caryn at 12:35 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

The colors in this are crazy--very vibrant. No wonder you wanted a picture!

comment by alan at 01:14 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

The first word that came to mind was vibrant - same as Caryn. I love the contrasts throughout the image - surfaces, luminance and colors. Great shot.

comment by Geoff at 03:07 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

I keep coming back to it as well, but I still can't like it. The colours are almost upsetting :) I might tortur myself a few more times today to see if things change, but I don't think they will.

comment by jezblog.com at 04:24 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Go for it. Hey, sometimes you just gotta stop a stranger in green shoes and pink toes.

comment by GeckoZ at 06:43 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

hey David, what if you are inteding to take a natural shot of people like those reflections u once posted? would u still approach them and ask, can i take a picture of your reflection? the effects wouldn't be as good already.

:-)

comment by John Washington at 07:13 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Wow, you finally posted it after procrastinating for all this time. I'm glad you did because it is a good image. Very graphic and grungy.

comment by Bob at 09:07 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

I'm not totally buying it.

This isn't a sly self-portrait made when you were playing dress-up on Fat Tuesday, was it, David?

hello good photo

comment by SteveO at 10:02 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Hmm, not too sure about this one, i like the muted colours in everything but the actual feet, the composition is spot on but the flesh colour is, well, a bit nasty. Sorry :-)

comment by Jen at 10:11 AM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

You aren't the only nut to photograph a stranger's feet. 20 years ago I was enjoying a boat trip off Green Island, Australia, when a rather loud but pleasant Yank asked if he could photograph mine against the deck. Being a photo nut myself I wasn't at all phased! Great shot I bet my feet didn't look nearly so interesting! Jen

This is what photoblogging is about...... A community discussing the likes and dislikes of an image, and offering constructive criticism. Congrats!

comment by Mohammed Adenwala at 04:08 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

I love the composition, but I don't know if i like the colors. The skin looks to drab, in my opinion, and the others are too vibrant (compared to the skin tone).

Hi David,

I was just wondering when the Chromasia's Guide to Image Post Processing book will be released ;)

Tell us the secrets Dave... it would definitelly be a best seller!

:)

P.S. Love this Shot!

Great pic, in fact I stole a copy, resized it, and added a little text; I use it as my Ultima Online sig, thanks.

Have you considered providing a link to some of the other 14 versions? It would be interesting to see what you were playing around with.

always fascinated by female feet i was at first repulsed by this shot. but hearing the context of how the shot was made, did it for me. a great story and beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.
