cool blue....

comment by Jem at 08:02 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Gorgeous colours and softness Dave - I love the randomness of the guy and.. whatever he's doing! Really quite fine art-esque :)

It chucked it down with snow here today, so I didn't actually manage to get out of the driveway let alone to Blackpool :(

comment by Gavin at 08:04 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Wow. Such soft tones and colours. Excellent!

comment by alan at 08:09 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

that sound you just heard was my jaw hitting the floor. stunning, gorgeous image.

comment by nogger at 08:12 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Strange indeed. Is that a painting? Is that the artist pr a viewer?

comment by nogger at 08:13 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Or not pr.

comment by roberman at 08:25 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Incredible! Was this shot taken on Mars?

comment by Christopher at 08:33 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

The toning in this is incredible. Even at 1/1000 it looks like the grass has some motion blur. Or is that just lens blur?

comment by maiken at 08:35 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

The softness here is indeed very attractive. Is this a blurred layer in Photoshop?

comment by Mikelangelo at 08:39 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Diggin' the color/tones and the nice contrast between the rich gray/blue sky the grayish grassy textures, then into the sands. Neat.

comment by Jason Ertel at 08:45 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

David,

This is an excellent image. Very surreal and dark. Could be the
next Echo & the Bunnymen album cover.

comment by Frank at 08:59 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

wonderful!

comment by mark at 09:19 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

but midget photographers? I thought they tended to stay closer to Fleetwood?

I like the muted colouring, it's a look that I've been moving toward of late. My original thinking was a kindof super-saturated but 'bleached' look - and I know that doesn't make a whole lot of sense but I guess what I actually meant was muted rather than bleached...so thanks, once again I'll look like I'm merely copying you....b****rd ;-))

comment by ben at 09:31 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Spectacular!

Just as a thought, this would be a really interesting shot to use if/when you put together a few post-processing tutorials, as you've mentioned you might do in the past.

I'd really love to see what the original image looked like on this one...

comment by Jeet at 09:34 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

This photograph would have earnt my positive vote even without the "strange thing".

comment by Roy at 09:36 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

This I like - and I'm not usually a fan of selective colouring. Great tonal qualities here though and three parallel areas of interest, which are balanced very neatly on top of each other. Jason got it just right with the album cover suggestion, which you seem to have pre-empted to some extent with the square crop, although for me it evokes Pink Floyd - but hey, I'm showing my age there. I like the frame vignette too.

comment by Robert at 10:40 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Amazing coloration and detail in the sky and grass.

comment by jreinds at 10:42 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

This is brilliant! One of those photographs that left me awestruck. Is the softness achieved in Photoshop or it comes straight from the camera? Either way, this is one striking shot.

comment by kim at 10:45 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

Love the colours but can you please tell us what that guy is doing? It's bugging me!

comment by Pawel at 11:06 PM (GMT) on 3 March, 2006

your almost all shoTzz are amazing...and i like it.. :)

comment by Viking at 12:16 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

I like the soft tones, the blended highlights, the subtle vignette... I just wish the mess in the lower right corner was something else :)

comment by Lee at 12:59 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Excellent, I love the mood and colours!

comment by david at 01:11 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

This is an amazing landscape - the colours are so soft and the guy in the foregrounf makes this image what it is..great! cheers

comment by Geoff at 01:22 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Superb Dave! It's shots like these that cement Chromasia's reputation as the photoblog of discerning viewers :)

Is that a photographer shooting a three dimensional somewhat weird object (chair?) in front of a blue backdrop?

The tones of the sky and grass are sublime.

comment by garyx at 01:38 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Quite a lot going on here that I like: the composition, and especially the pp.

comment by Mike Dougan at 01:40 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

My thought's are the same as Roberman, looks like it could be another planet.

comment by Deb at 01:45 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Oh Lordy.....I flicked it open and what sprung out at me? The furry hide of a primitive beast of the savannah...a prehistoric predator....the contours of its carcass baking in the merciless glare of the sun.....the lushness of it's coat diminished to tufts.....tokens of former existence and vitality....ravaged and ravished by opportunistic nature.

And then I realise it's sand dunes....

(I think I'm just beginning to understand the catalytic, creative power of inspired imagery....

......and vodka and cranberry :) )

comment by Gary at 02:02 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

love that middle ground nice and wooly!

comment by Allan at 02:14 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!

Woderful image David... you continue to astonish. I second the Echo and the Bunnymen sentiment. And here I thought I was the only one still listening...

comment by Matthew Campagna at 02:21 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

I most of the time find something interesting in your shots, but this is the first one you've posted in a while that has simply appealed to my senses. Even without the strange thing, it would make a lovely beach shot. I love the grass you've got on your dunes ...

comment by Fellow Eskimo at 03:31 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

The guy adds alot to the photo...especally how large the dune/hill is! I thought it was like something you could walk over in a couple of steps at first...noooooo. Looks huge! I do like the saturation on this image though.

comment by miles at 03:34 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Wow, that is a pretty strange sight. now I'm thinking Blackpool might be stranger than Brighton... but nah.

comment by Kristyn at 03:37 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

I can finally use the settings to try this shot myself. Love the blur of the grass.

comment by Marcelo Vilares at 03:54 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Great post-processing on this one! The soft-focus in the grass really adds to the image and is striking against the darker sky.

I've been wanting to start doing some selective coloring/toning (as I assume you did here) on my photographs...and this shot just makes me want to do it even more.

Keep them coming!

what a unique fabulous composition. the blues, the blur, the softness, the texture... all in perfect unison

comment by PlasticTV at 05:30 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Great tonality but i can't say i like it very much. Perhaps it appears too manipulated...

comment by Paky at 05:46 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

This is an excellent image. Great!

comment by Bob at 06:33 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

A product shoot for some marital-aid contraption?

Everything here works for me, except the too dark guy covering too much of the contraption.

comment by Jeff at 06:56 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

That's desaturated / colour corrected and softened in photoshop, no? It seems more to be a fullmoon shot than at 2.30pm in the afternoon (even though it is the grey U.K. we're talking about ;-))

comment by Tomasz from p h o t o w a l l s at 08:18 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Unique, film-like atmosphere. Great, intriguing scene. Excellent shot!

comment by ROB at 08:42 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

I looked at this for some time checking out the dunes and sky thinking the object in the bottom was somewhat a distraction. Only looking again did I see it was a man. Wow, the size of everything just changed in the scene.

comment by tobias at 11:36 AM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Have you messed too much with the saturation. I too didn't realise that it was a man but perhaps that is due to too little contrast. I am not sure about this, the dunes which are vibrant no matter the year seem a little too bleached. and the sky seems to really accentuate the artificial finish to this.

comment by Silver Sova at 01:16 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

any filters used?

comment by vanessa at 02:41 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

this looks so surreal. its like a dream that i wouldn't want to be lost in. i love the sky though and the grass that seems to be swaying freely. ok, i love it all! great image!

comment by peter at 02:46 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

There's no doubt a surreal quality to this shot, and as such I pretty much like it. But I can't help wondering if the postprocessing is a bit over the top.

comment by Donncha O Caoimh at 03:20 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Very strange colours. love the blue!

comment by redart at 03:45 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

very beautiful photo

comment by Gordon at 04:32 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

it reminds me of fur coats and decaying mice, but in a good way.

comment by karf at 05:48 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Incredible shot, I like the surreal mood, especially the mysterious man on the beach.

comment by navin harish at 06:33 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Very dreamlike, almost like a painting

comment by Sandy at 06:52 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

What a great shot. I love everything about it.

comment by m at 06:58 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

cool, only saw the fella after reading the comments for some clues.!

comment by SB at 08:25 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

This easily makes it into my top 5 favourite shots from all of your work that i have seen so far........its the colour of the sky and the way i want to run and leap over the top of the dune that does it i think.

And no way in a million years would i believe this was blackpool unless you had said......

comment by djn1 at 09:06 PM (GMT) on 4 March, 2006

Thanks everyone.

And by way of explanation ...

The 'thing' in the bottom right is a large model of a shoe in front of a backdrop. The guy in front of it was photographing it.

comment by JELIELĀ³ at 02:37 AM (GMT) on 5 March, 2006

Bloody gorgeous

comment by peter cohen at 03:53 AM (GMT) on 5 March, 2006

...While he was photographing the shoe thingie, you were back there photographing him.

And meanwhile, somebody was way back there photographing you, photographing him.

And then at that same instant, there was someone way back there behind that person photographing her photographing you.

Etcetera, etcetera...

I wonder what the longest (in physical distance) chain of four or more (hopefully many more than four) all-at-the-same-moment photographs ever taken would be.

Bet you didn't think of THAT, Mr. sneak-up-on-people smarty-pants!

;-)

very interesting shot!

comment by twinlens. at 11:27 AM (GMT) on 5 March, 2006

just gorgeous. the textures are amazing, i want to touch these fluffy stuffed toy hills.

comment by Ellie at 01:37 PM (GMT) on 5 March, 2006

excellent cropping and exposure bias, love it.

comment by Rob at 11:37 AM (GMT) on 6 March, 2006

Stunning colours as ever. I'd still love to see a "raw" pre-PP image of yours to compare

comment by prasoon at 10:24 PM (GMT) on 6 March, 2006

i came up with the same question as roberto had come up with - shot on alien grounds eh?

comment by Hannes at 07:27 PM (GMT) on 7 March, 2006

Fantastic shot. Like the infrared-effect and the suprising addition of the painter(?) on the bottom.

comment by James the Marathoner at 02:01 AM (GMT) on 9 March, 2006

Fantastic! I need a better camera.
