You'd be forgiven for thinking that the title refers to the post-processing, but 'believe it or not!' is the name of the shop over which this dinosaur and his implausibly large pocket watch reside. That said, given the surreal nature of the subject matter, I did go for a rather in-your-face version of this shot. This version is partly an HDR (High Dynamic Range) image (I retained the sky from the original shot) as I wanted to add some detail back to the underside of the dinosaur. Anyway, if nothing else it's certainly odd enough to warrant posting ;-)

HDR images certainly do look weird...compared to a normal shot. Everyone knows in a photograph you cannot have the sky and something in the foreground in correct exposure(not like this anyway), either a silohette or blown out sky.
So it is interesting to see sometimes.

Great job using HDR to keep that beautiful dark blue sky while still getting detail in the mouth and neck. I believe!

I hoped this isn't an HDR image (before reading your info), but I still like it much as it's such an awesome pic. Astonishing shadows and colorus (not to mention the perspective and dark vignette around:). Technically beautiful.
Great Colours... as always. There seems a bit of a discrepency between the time on your camera and the clock...

After days of abstracts, here's finally another picture i can laugh at. :) Shooting from the underside makes the t-rex look big and comical.

Does that clock say 'Ripley's - Believe It or Not!"? I didn't even know that show had stores. Its a good thing they do, otherwise no dinosaur-hovering-over-clock shots. Your HDR posts have been quite someting. Its really peaked my interest and got me experimenting. Thanks.

I like the bad breath out of the dino's mouth. :-)
comment bySolin at 06:09 AM (GMT) on 13 March, 2006
It works fine; it's funny and with excelent colors and composition. I believe this time the HDR technique did work very well with the subject and the general surrealistic feeling of the shot. Isn't this all about? techique as a resource, not as a goal.

I think the lines between the dinasaur and the sky is far too sharp which makes it look a little too fake, a bit like a pasted shot, white the building doesn't.
PS did you add the vignetting or was this the lens?
comment by Jasmine at 01:07 PM (GMT) on 13 March, 2006
Really, really fantastic shot. I started laughing as soon as it appeared on my screen. The details are amazing. Pefect use of some HDR. Brilliant shot. Thanks Dave!

That is a really cool dinosaur... and granted, the post processing does work here. Sort of.... The dinosaur looks like it as lit in a studio.
Is it a reallly tiny dinosaur, or a really big pocketwatch?
Nice one, once again. I think I'll give an eye to the HDR reprocessing. But I know the most part in the result is due to your talent.
comment by Barry Burris at 05:22 PM (GMT) on 13 March, 2006
Love this pic and your use of HDR. I like the heightened realizm. Since utilizing HDR do you find yourself shooting a bracketed set of shots all the time or just when you have HDR in mind? How else has it effected your shooting? ie...do you avoid moving objects? Love the site and check it daily...it is very very inspiring.

This is obviously a fake dinosaur. Anyone can take a picture of a fake non moving dinosaur, that's easy. Methinks you should try your hand at photographing a real one sometime, it's definitely not a cakewalk.

Great subject and angle; I'm surprised you didn't get around to photographing this before. The yellows and color of the clouds look a bit odd, but otherwise I think the lighting looks more natural in this HDR shot. Nice one!
