Here's another one from last weekend, and for those of you who have proper winters – a lot of the US and Europe, Canada, Siberia, and other such places where you can actually tell what season it is from month to month – this image may not seem particularly riveting. But here in the UK, where summer lasts for about a week, and the rest of the year is normally some sort of strange combination of summer, autumn, winter, rain and dull, grey drabness all rolled into one, the idea that snow might settle on the beach is almost unheard of. And believe me, if I'd gone out later in the day I would have missed it ;-)

I remember the English seasons well, and here in Denmark you sometimes hear that there are two Autumns: the green one and the grey one. So I know exactly what you're talking about. In any case I like this picture - there's a nice symmetry and you can practically feel the cold.

Besides making me very enthusiastic about going out and taking pictures more often with my camera, your website has become my daily 'treat' of surprise and childish curiosity as to what it is I'll discover on your webpage...love it practically everytime...thanks for sharing!

Love the whiteness and the contrast!

I've honestly never seen such an image.. where the snow covers a beach all the way to the water..of course i'm from oklahoma, usa and we're surrounded by nothing but grass.. so i guess thats a reason too

None the less the water in this is very appealing.. (to me at least)

comment by Troy at 07:11 PM (GMT) on 17 March, 2006

ok, I think what I like best in the image... and what keeps me staring at it... is the transition fromt eh water to the beach. I know it can't be true, but in my mind I keep seeing the water as if you caught a giant wave crashing down. To me it appears as if the water is standing a foot or more above the land and it's just now spilling over; or it's a thick putty that is rolling in. I can't expalin it any better then that... but it makes me keep looking at it to try and make since of waht I see. I really like it.

...another masterpiece. Wonderful!

Is it just me, but my first thought seeing this was of two abstract reindeers on a snowy background? If you also stare at it awhile, the photo morphs into an abstract closeup shot of someone's forehead with the stairs/railing being the eyebrows. =)

I've been watching your site for quite some time now almost on a daily basis and your photographs continue to amaze me with their great sense of originality, composition, colors, technique and feel.

Great shot, its not everyday you see snow on the beach, and I can say that I don't think I've ever seen a shot of a beach that looked so cold. Great stuff, definately worth actually living this close to the sea, because I can't see many people choosing to go to the seaside on a day like that, hence not many shots like this...great stuff. Nice angle and composition by the way, a long exposure at night with snow on the beach, now thats a shot I've never seen.......:)

I was wondering if you could take some pictures of all your children together some day... that would be extremely wonderful and awesome! I haven't seen any of your beautiful children in a long time and I missed them really much.

This is fantastic! I tried to get something like this myself - drove all the way to Formby from my home in Knowsley. When I got to the beach there was snow on the sand dune but by the water there was non in site. I was disappointed, I'd always wondered what a snowy beach would look like!

Beautiful! I know what you mean about seasons, Arizona only has hot and hotter.

comment by Tommy at 10:50 PM (GMT) on 17 March, 2006

I feel like I need to take a hot bath just looking at this. To me it looks like the whole ocean is frozen solid...

Very nice,David. When I first looked at it, I was not sure what is the scene and perspective. Visually really interesting. I am in Switzerland. We had also much snow here this winter. Now everything has melted. But they promise the next snow attack...

Its just amazing to have ever seen that frozen beach with a featured camera as a Indian

comment by PARC at 03:16 AM (GMT) on 18 March, 2006

This looks something out of a Narnia scene. Good one!

comment by Kuntal at 03:19 AM (GMT) on 18 March, 2006

Ah ,English Weather. *shakes head sadly*

Nice capture though

comment by Solin at 03:22 AM (GMT) on 18 March, 2006

Ok, weather is the topic, here in Juarez Mexico we have 22 to 25 celcius, and it's very sunny, the only bad wheater we have this season are the strong winds that drag a lot of sand from the desert to the city. Going back to the picture (the main topic) I can not stop looking at the sea waves and I'm trying to understand what happens when the sea meets the snow. To me, it seems that the sea waves where moulded (frozen) at least for a few seconds into the snow creating that amazing stop motion effect. In addition to that, great monochromatic composition!

comment by Robert at 03:27 AM (GMT) on 18 March, 2006

Different and great shot. The water line is very interesting.

Great picture and coming from Norway - the winter wonder land - I know what I am talking about. Winter is just great and it's wonderful to see it through you're eyes. Thanks for sharing!

comment by Heidi at 03:54 PM (GMT) on 18 March, 2006

What I love in this image is how brittle and fragile the snow and ice looks. The entire scene seems ready to crumble. Beautiful.

comment by JD at 04:33 PM (GMT) on 18 March, 2006

WOW it just looks amazing, I have to admin that I have never seen snow on the beach and I really want to now...

I'm not too sure about the composition, seems a little of centre (I'm presuming thats what you was after).
Coulours and contrast is absolutely amazing tho ;)

comment by Kenny at 06:53 PM (GMT) on 18 March, 2006

Looks great and a very special viewpoint, although I guess you are standing on top of the famous (in chromasia-world) main entrance to the beach.

I can't seem to decide if I think that the whites in the snow pops out to white in the middle section of the photo - in some spots. I guess its quite ok, it leaves a more cold look and feel to it. Great color tone b-t-w.

comment by Alex P at 07:34 PM (GMT) on 18 March, 2006

I love the texture of this shot, it feels so tangible. Great job!

comment by djn1 at 08:46 PM (GMT) on 18 March, 2006

Thanks everyone.

comment by Jamey at 02:16 AM (GMT) on 19 March, 2006

This shot actually scares me. It looks like the start of a Tim Burton movie. I keep expecting something or someone sinister to enter the frame and sweep up the stairs.

comment by PlasticTV at 07:12 AM (GMT) on 19 March, 2006

Wow at last an abstract i can REALLY relate to. i really love how the waves are breaking on shore. They look FROZEN!

comment by Peter at 05:46 PM (GMT) on 19 March, 2006

This is an incredible image -- I keep looking at it and I'm still not sure what I'm seeing. It plays with color (the lack), perspective, and form... you want to understand it like an itch that needs scratching. Water? Tar? Very interesting.

comment by jezblog.com at 04:46 PM (GMT) on 21 March, 2006

The join between the water and the land, the snow and the ice, the water and the winter...... er ...... whatever it is....... it's very interesting....... like the edge of a yuky scab, endlessly fascinating.

comment by prasoon at 10:36 PM (GMT) on 22 March, 2006

given a chance - i'd defintely shift to UK n it'll be this image of urs responsible for my shift - just loved this shot for its balance !!
