I'm never quite sure how abstracts will be received on chromasia, but I'm pleased with this one. Actually, I don't suppose it is an abstract – it's the grass on our local sand-dunes – but I've shifted the colour balance and I guess the 'real' subject matter isn't immediately apparent. Out of interest, can anyone tell me what this sort of grass is called? I have another shot of it here.

Well until you told me what it was, I had no idea (possibly a real close shot of some sort of furry animal was what I was thinking), so I think it still qualifies as abstract.
I guess the shallow DOF gives it that macro feel.

I have no idea about the name of the sort of grass in your photo. Here, in Portugal, we simply call it "ervas" or "arbustos".
Great tonality!

I get a Zen feeling, nice work!
comment byElla at 10:06 PM (GMT) on 31 March, 2006
Very soothing indeed. I love the fact that parts of the grass appear pin-sharp while the background is blurry as if touched by a soft breeze. More 'abstracts' for me, please...
comment bythukai at 10:48 PM (GMT) on 31 March, 2006
Nice abstract. I like how is just the "front row" that's in focus. The variations of colour in between is perfect.
comment by Free Spirit at 10:52 PM (GMT) on 31 March, 2006
It is marram grass :o) sand dunes would have trouble existing without it. I love this photo, the colour and tranquillity of it all is just perfect. I'd love to see more similar shots!
Thank you for sharing your photos.

This feels more like animal hair to me instead grass...it looks sharp.
i don't know... this violet... no, i don't like it...

I don't understand how you turn out such high quality images every single day... I've just starting my own photoblog and I keep checking in for inspiration!

Why be concern about how your photo will be receive? Just follow your feeling. Your eye is superb most of the time. This one is great. Be yourself. Sorry for the patronizing.

Not too sure about this one. I find my eye wandering round trying to find something to focus on and not managing to.
For some reason it makes me think of part of the blue brushes at a car-wash! ;-)

I use to come everyday on chromasia, but, sorry to say that david, this one is not a Chromasia photo. it is certainely not your best shot
john: yep, I keep meaning to take some shots of the kids, but they've all had colds and don't look their best.
redge: you're quite right, I've added it to that category.
christophe: I'd be interested to hear why you think this isn't a "chromasia photo".

Hey David,
Well I don't really know how to explain that (and be sure that I love your photos :P), but when I look back to your other shots, it seems to me (and it is very personnal) that usually your picture try to show a story (like all the stuff you find on the beach), you try to show a subject. In fact a lot of your photos are portrait, Landscape.. but it is very rare when you do abstract (when I say abstract it's means that you can't figure what is it). So it is why I am telling that it is not a chromasia photo, it is not about the quality of the photo by itself but more about what it is shot.
That's my 2 cents and it is very subjective
Chris

very, very beautiful. I love the different shades.
christophe: I guess the story that this one shows is a rather quiet one: just the grass blowing in the breeze, and as such I think it probably has a more limited appeal. You've right though, these things are very subjective.
Personally I don't like it that much. Someone wrote that this is "a nice composition" ?... Don't like the color too. Sorry, but I'm sure the next one is going to be really great again! :-)
^Yes...I think sometimes people just write nice composition, or similar just to get the comment on the page. There is obviously nothing compositionally great about this, having said that i like abstracts and the colour is nice.
I dont like the little flecks of yellow/green mind...

yeah I'm not too sure about this one also. the green and yellow/orange distract from it... it looks like lens aberration to me. Maybe it needs to be monochromatic?

Nicely composed, it has a nice tranquility to it.
I think it's called Marram Grass Dave.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marram_grass
Oh and I like the blue and the texture, nice abstract.
I wana see some more pics of your kids....these are all nice but when you photograph your kids its something else......god bless
You should be pleased with this shot, it really is quite nice, but isn't it a bit cold for springtime? ;)
