cool shot. You do these shots very well. Plus your PP is always great for establishing a good mood to the shot. Great work

This *is* a comforting image. I was scanning some of my early childhood pictures yesterday and its funny how the colors and contrast of those old images hold a sense of nostalgia for a lot of us. Great work with this one!

Dave:
The title of the pages no longer show the title of the photo? Is this by design? I know iIcan mouse over or click the comments, but it was kinda nice to be able to just look up at the top of the page and see the title.

This is very very comforting. Its like a lovely painting or postcard. Siggghhhhh :)
comment by Hank at 07:41 PM (GMT) on 3 April, 2006
the toning in this one is better than many of your past entries which looked too yellow like pee or brown like crap, or something. this one just looks 70s faded and old and would look even better with some scratches and grain.
comment by Adrian Hudson at 07:49 PM (GMT) on 3 April, 2006
I have some slides taken on the beach when i was a child in the early '60s. The colours are just like this. I know exactly what you are getting at with your "comforting" comment
wonderful ! i like this warm toning of all your recently posted images. phantastic. watching your website every day is the perfect start in the morning.

That's really weird. I said to myself before I read your caption when I saw this image...."you can actually hear the beach when you come to chromasia" then I opened your comments tab to read the comments and your caption was so in tune with what I thought.
Nice shot Dave.
comment byBill Hooker at 10:04 PM (GMT) on 3 April, 2006
I think the commenters above have nailed it: it's the familiarity of the scene, the warm colours, and most of all the "old Kodak print" look.
It's lovely, and indeed very comforting.
comment byJohn Washington at 10:19 PM (GMT) on 3 April, 2006
I don't get warm at all with this image! I just see the water whipped up into foam by the vicious wind that chap with the dogs is leaning into, and the rain cloud disappearing into the distance leaving wet shingle in the foreground. This is Irish Sea coast winter not California ocean mist! I think this is one of your "disturbing" pictures with the colours saying one thing and the image telling a completely different story; so for me, uncomfortable, or maybe disconcerting. A deceptively complex image.

There are just a c ouple of pics right now, but it's getting more!
Thanks for the inspiration!

Great shot, I'm interested in the conditions at the time of capture - was it rainining? or was it sea hoare/spindrift causing the slight blur effect evident? I also like the wave breakers highlights/reflection. Top shot. Mal

Lovely!
comment byRobert at 12:58 AM (GMT) on 4 April, 2006
Not exciting, and I can see what Nick's saying about the clothing and cold mist, but I grew up along the beach, and all seasons, even the cold ones, are relaxing when you get the chance to walk your dog along the shore.
The tone gives it a sort of "faded postcard" look.
comment by Drunky at 01:38 AM (GMT) on 4 April, 2006
The faded tone makes me feel as if air's full of pollution. I would prefer a fresh looking beach with clean air. Faded old look is not working for me.
comment byCaryn at 02:31 AM (GMT) on 4 April, 2006
I don't find it comfortining, necessarily, but I can see how others might, with its warm tones and the family in the foreground and the dog. People look like they're having fun. I just can't move away from the icy-looking water and the way everyone's bundled up.
comment by doreen at 02:43 AM (GMT) on 4 April, 2006
it is quite a comforting image, even though it looks like it was taken on a rather dreary day.
by the way, i loved yesterday's photo =D

Wow! I recently saw your website on Time's 50 best websites and although not expecting a photoblog to have professional quality photos, your site certainly is that. I am nobody to judge whether a picture is professional quality or not, but hey, it is art, and so I guess I can.
You have inspired me to go out and shoot more with my camera, as I also have a 20D. Thank you.
Keep posting and I'll try to keep commenting.
And oh yeah, I like the colors in this picture. Makes me want to buy a dog and live in England.
comment byChris Howard at 07:12 AM (GMT) on 4 April, 2006
Other than the 2:1 cropping, there's no indication that this isn't a shot from thirty or forty years ago pulled from a parent's yellowing shoebox of prints. Low contrast, muted colors, a bit soft. Quite different than the rest of your work. Was this more a function of the natural conditions or your post processing?
comment byeterisk at 09:52 AM (GMT) on 4 April, 2006
Looks like a very good day at the beach. Th ecomposition works really well with the water line crossing the frame. The muted colours works really well.

Really like the lighting in this one and the composition is well balanced. Only negative is that the foreground is a little OOF - strange you didn't use a smaller aperture?
I know what you mean about this being comforting image - I was brought up by the see - and this shot feels like my childhood - strangely the light looks to me more like the east coast than the west...
I can't really explain why, but for some reason I find this quite a comforting image.
