I had intended to put up a picture of Finley today (our seven month old son), but forgot that today was his nursery day: and by the time he got home he really wasn't in the mood for being photographed. I did manage a few shots, but there wasn't anything worth putting up. So, here's another one of Rhowan taken on Tuesday, and as my wife put it: "that makes up for the one you put up on Monday" ;-)

All great shots this week, David. Really hard to pick a favorite. Even Rhowan's earlier picture which caused a stir, least of all from your wife, was a terrific shot given the context and the understanding of her expression gained from your subsequent description. Love the diffuse glow and blending of this one. Nice theme week!

She'll forgive you because you post a blown-out, blurry portrait of her?

I must admit i was blown away by this image when i first saw it. It's beautiful, and you've capture one of those special moments only kids seem to have, pure happiness! Well done Dave, you've done it again.

Now thats a lovely, lively, beautiful, youthful, fun filled image. With interesting sharpness on the hair and soft movement on the face, great high key vibe, thats a lovely image of Rhowan....er....gotta say Dave....... I love this and was with the missis on the other.
comment by Annie at 10:50 PM (GMT) on 13 April, 2006
I've never commented before, not because I don't like your work, but because I like all of it and am always impressed.
But this picture does something that few other pictures TRULY do (not just your's): show what the photographer feels. This picture is more about you and what's behind the camera, than it is about your daughter.
What love you have for her. Beautiful photo.

Gene Tellerman - She'll forgive because here's an image full of life and fun. The sort of photos that makes you smile when you look at it. An image of perfect childhood.
That's what a good portrait is about - capturing the essence of the person! This IS Rhowan :-)

Ah, but she's also a bit of a Gollum too: in the "but I want to eat this raw and frozen fishfinger" sort of way ;-)

Beautiful picture, you're children are so lucky that they wil have all these to look back on when they are older.
It would be great to see a recent pic of Finley too! I bet he's grown lots since we last saw him!

kim: I'll try and get a decent shot of Fin' tomorrow. I did take some today, but they weren't any good. I've also got to get a shot of Amirah (our eldest) to complete the set :-)

You've captured a great moment. Just more proof that photos don't need to be sharp and clear to be emotive.

This doesn't look like the Rhowan from Monday.. is it really? in fact putting the two pictures side by side you can't even tell that it's the same child! .. Not even by the hair.. seems completely different!
But nonetheless, if I were a father taking photos of my kids, this is definitely how I'd like to remember them. The expression is perfect. The fact that it's not in focus doesn't matter.. The tones and skin color, the smile, and the over exposed parts of the photo all add to the innocence, the pure happiness of a child that is safe in a place surrounded by a loving family... For me this works. (I'm a sucker for portaits).. But Monday's? Not so sure.
Good job Dave.

Oh and before someone says "I think her dad would know a bit better" I'd like to clarify that I wasn't doubting that this is Rhowan :) .. I was just saying that comparing the two photos.. one would hardly be able to tell.

David, wonderful image. I'm trying to determine if you did a reverse vignetting on the corners. Also, how did you achieve the overexposure effect while still maintaining the subtleties of the colors and detail with what appears to be a backkit image? This is by far my favorite shot of your portrait week.
comment by Andrew at 11:22 PM (GMT) on 16 April, 2006
