I'll give anyone who can correctly identify this image (in terms of content and location) a free 9x6" print. Three clues: the high res' version is a 32.74 megapixel file (so would make a great H U G E print), it was shot with my 20D, and the green isn't really green ;-)
Oh, and John Washington and Mark Power are both banned from taking part as they were with me when this was taken :-)
Update: Ok, we have a winner, and it's not JD with his monkey hypothesis (though he was right that it's the decking on the north pier, as were a few more of you); but the outright winner is Dave who said:
"Is it decking on Blackpool's north pier with a section of tram track?"
Strictly speaking I suppose I could argue that it's a train track rather than a tram track, but I suspect that that might be a little pedantic of me ;-)
Oh, and in case you're interested, there's a correctly coloured version of the original here:
And finally, my apologies if you thought the title was a clue. It wasn't ;-)
Update #2: I've just had a quick conversation with Dave and he feels as though he had an unfair advantage over the rest of you in that he also lives in Blackpool (only about half a mile from me, though we've not met up), so the closest comments prior to his (there were two of them a few seconds apart) are from Terry and Chris. I'll send both of them a print.

I'm thinking it's a section of flooring (mirrored on both axes, hence the huge filesize), but I can't decide what the not-green green bit is. My first instinct was some sort of threshold from one room to another, but that's as close as I can get to any semblance of logic.
comment byJohan at 08:40 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006

The portion to the left (in upper left quadrant) is a mirror standing vertically, as in a dance-studio mirror, and the non-green bit is simply the cove base (that's what it's called in the u.s.) that goes along the bottom of almost any wall. That IS a beautiful floor too. Then the photo is quadrupled.
Or so it seems from here. :-)
comment by peter cohen at 08:48 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006

Ok this is definitely a reflection of some sort because at the horizontal center line, the diagonals coming down and back in on the bottom half flare out just a smidge and there is no actual joint there... But then why would such nice wood go into water where it would ultimately rot... So a mirror? But where.... hmmmmmm
comment byMatthew at 09:26 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006
The grains do match up though... is this manipulated at all besides the green? one quadrant is repeated four times...

comment byTwist at 09:29 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006
My guess is that the original image is a wood floor and the green is a threshold for the door. The image is then mirrored three times to create the kalediscope look. Right?
comment byJesse Watkins at 09:30 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006
It's a giant belt buckle.
comment by Rob at 09:32 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006
Well the exact pattern is repeated 4 times both horizontally and vertically, (The unique nicks and patterns in the wood are clearly visible 4 times. But damned if I know what this is. They look like nail heads obviously, holding the boards down, or up?
comment byMark at 09:41 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006
It's a small section of flooring that has been photographed next to a mirror, which makes up 1/4 of the image. The original is then duplicated and flipped horizontally and layed next to the original. Then merge the 2 layers and copy. Then rotate that new layer 180* and set it to meet the top of the original. Voila.
Works well with archtechture shots too. Did loads of these last year, much fun!
comment byRyan at 09:43 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006
Another thought, floorboards are not nailed down that way. Not hardwood floors here in the US anyway.... Something tells me this might be a boat... But then what is the green thing that is not really green...
comment by drunky at 09:48 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006
Most likely it is a vertical shot of a wooden ceiling...or maybe a floor
Hey David, get a new camera like a 5D. you're good at what you do and it would be fun to see how you stretch the full 35mm sensor to it's limits.
comment byJason at 09:49 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006
My bet, you shot it through a kaleidescope or a through the bottom of a prisim that you held to the lens of your 20d.
I don't think it's the floorboards or anything like that. I'm more inclined to say that they are the walls of a room or paneling of some sort.
Perhaps, the green portion, because of the angle represent a beveled edge.
Is this the inside of a sauna?
comment byStephen Lynch at 09:50 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006
if you isolate just one quadrant, i chose the top right, it looks like where an extension or replacement of wood. For example, the dark wood is old and aged and the light wood is new wood that has not been exposed to the elements yet. The nails seem to indicate that it is used for what appears to be decking, but the gap between the boards are not wide enough for that. So i'm going to say its some sort of wall with old and new wood, but although it's still likely that it is used as a some sort of flooring or decking. As for the green thing, i'm goning to just make a wild guess. I think one of the boards is missing and it is some sort of pipe, and then you did some color adjustment and an inversion. that'll give you a little white sliver, and after a color adjustment, a grey pipe..... As for where it is.....i live in the U.S. so i have no earthly idea, but i'll say somewhere on a pier on the floyde coast, you seem to like those.
comment byStephen Lynch at 09:52 PM (GMT) on 19 April, 2006
oh yeah, and the original image is manipulated to be mirrored over the x and y axis which will account for the large file size

Just a thought for future ideas... I'm starting to look at PS for processing images as I generally don't touch them at the moment. When you are processing items in the future, I would be interested to see what and how you process and what tools you use. Would it be possible to save an action as you go and post that action with the image so that other budding PS'ers can learn from what you do so well?
Cheers!

I'd worked out the quarters last night but not really taken any notice of the detail until now, for my tupence worth I'd guess on it being part of some cheaply finished wooden object, if it were not for the name "portal" I'd have said it was furniture maybe part of a chair or a sideboard. However due to the name I'd say it was a serving hatch or an entrance to a ticket booth or the like.
I'm with Terry, it was orginally a striaght down view of one of the tramway crossings, with one rail in shot.
I have no idea what it is, but it's freaking amazing :)
Agh! So close! Good guessing Dave!
Cheers!
Woo! Missed that Update 2! Cheers Dave!
interesting, kaleidoscope flow :-)
Thanks everyone, and maybe next time I put up a "guess the content" I'll make sure it's a bit fairer for those of you from outside the UK.
This is a neat photo, but I can honestly say I prefer the original shot you linked to better (although I realize it's not quite as conducive to a contest).
