I did try a few portraits of Fin' today, but they didn't turn out all that well so I thought I'd put this one up. It's been sitting around in my processed folder for a while: I'm not sure why I didn't put it up sooner.

On another matter: I don't have a shot-of-the-day thing on chromasia (mostly because I don't often have enough time to look at enough sites to make it worthwhile), but if I did, today's entry would point to John's latest effort. My jealousy, on this occasion, borders on the clinically morbid ;-)

And if you're bored, and/or have the time to do me a favour: please feel free to go and leave nasty comments on the following four images of mine that have been reproduced by YouNeverKnew on flickr:

It really bugs me when people reproduce my work without permission :-/

Thanks everyone, they've now been removed.

Another fantastic "contact" with your work. :-)

comment by Eugene at 07:46 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

very nice!

comment by Paul at 08:04 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

Wow...sand or snow? I'm assuming it's sand as I've seen tyres dumped on a beach but not up a mountain!

comment by ps at 08:05 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

nice, sand looks like snow. really nice :)

comment by Janice at 08:13 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

I'm gonna guess that it's snow?

comment by giacomo at 08:16 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

very nice shoot, it's a sand! (take a look at "categories: fylde coast")

comment by Neil at 08:17 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

nah that's sand! cool sho, seems a tad dark to me tho.

comment by Erik at 08:23 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

Honestly, Im not too fond of it.
It looks okay, but cerainly isnt one of you better ones.

comment by bmoll at 08:23 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

Nice one, a tyre with such a 'contact' on it, lying on a vast area covered with snow (even if it's just a disguised seashore) has to be attractive and creates pretty mysterious atmosphere. I like it :).

comment by micki at 08:48 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

It's a great shot, the colors of the background are so pleasing! Love the sand ground into the letters.

comment by owen at 09:25 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

Excellent. I love how you've got the sand looking like snow. Very clever indeed.

comment by Justin Gaynor at 09:25 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

Great composition, nice angling to really frame that word. This shot leaves a lot to the imagination. Good work.

comment by shaped at 09:37 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

very nice shot. great composition. the background works very well

comment by A.R. at 10:02 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

Eerily beautiful!

comment by Adam Lee Dalziel at 10:11 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

Great as usual - I have just taken my last batch of photos with jpeg format - all my photos are now going to be in RAW - the quality here and on other blogs made me too curious to put it off any longer - I'm sold

Thanks for the continued inspiration!

Looks like it was taken in the Alps....

Great use of DOF on this.

comment by gianluca at 11:06 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

no Mr. David I add to the few voices out of the chorus, I don't like it.
Cold and without soul. I say this becouse normally you bring me by hand to explore corners or details of the world we live in, giving them the gift of beauty and dignity. With your extraordinary sense of composition and the capacity to let the colours talk reaching your heart you normally exite and reassure me in the same time. But not today. I'm sure you'll do it tomorrow.
ciao, gianluca

comment by Timothy Gray at 11:12 PM (GMT) on 20 April, 2006

Great DOF here.....colors are desaturated in a pleasing way...could be sand or snow!

comment by Robert at 01:12 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

My first though on the seeing the thumbnail was "cool, he's gone on a trip somewhere cold"

I like the snow effect on the sand; shakes up the common perception of good a beach photo a bit. The blurred figures in the back and faux peaks add to the illusion. Great stuff.

comment by Janice at 01:45 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

I can't believe someone is using your work on another site! I am outraged. I have left appropriate comments for them. Report this person to Flickr!

comment by dave at 01:49 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

I'm interested in this shot. I took some shots on this beach when it snowed a couple of months ago: they turned out crap! Is this snow or just a much post processed image?

comment by Robert at 02:24 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

Looks like the stolen photos are down now. I hope YouNeverKnew got "her" account yanked.

comment by Clay at 02:24 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

Neat shot :) I bet NASA will be calling next time they need a space photo to promote their next 'interstellar landing.'

comment by Matt Simpson at 02:49 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

Nice DOF on this one. It really works for me, but I'm not sure how to articulate it. I just like the word "contact," which helps ;)

Oh, and those flickr photos seem to be gone now.

comment by Matthew Lindhiem at 03:11 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

This photo makes me feel like I have had too much to drink.

comment by jgarcía at 04:13 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

For a moment I thought that one was snow...

My congratulations.

comment by Somitra Jain at 05:29 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

great composition, and subject , but a human element in focus would have increased the appeal

comment by Bob at 05:41 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

From Mars, no doubt...Dune.

Reported all 4. Nice to see that flickr is immediately responsive. (Yes?)

comment by flying cow at 05:48 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

eery, but eye-catching

comment by Mark [londonrubbish] at 06:26 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

I love this, it makes me think of having just landed on another planet with the two figures in the distance hurrying frighteningly towards me. The toning is really nice and the contrast between the sharpness of the foreground and blur of the background is perfect. You must have been lying on the tire?

comment by KPK at 06:55 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

First I thought of an Antarctica shot but now I think sand is the right idea. Thanks for pointing to John Washington's site, it's linked now from my blog :-)

comment by bruno at 07:01 AM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

very nice and kind of funny shot :)

comment by SteveO at 12:10 PM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

I really like it, nice interesting use of depth of field and the colour (or lack of) works really well, cool :-)

comment by Jem at 04:36 PM (GMT) on 21 April, 2006

I really like this shot's bokeh...
