First: thanks for all the great comments on yesterday's shot: they were much appreciated, not least because I don't often post photojournalistic type material, so it's good to see that it was well received.
As for this shot: I find it difficult to resist taking shots of graffiti, but after thinking of the title for this one there was no way I wasn't going to post it ;-)

We say rather " un blog " in French.
I indeed admit not to understand the link between title and photo?
You warn against portfolios which post too much, and in great quantities? That means saying that too much art kills Art.

I have a feeling you'll take some flak as your title indicates, but while not a moving or particularly meaningful image, it still has a gritty, urban feel that keeps it from being just a snapshot. It also makes a good inside joke for those who have followed your blog for a while.

Beautiful shades of blue...nice texture.

The subdued colors are appealing. Excellent contrast.

There is a odd mixture of great and not so great in this picture. The processing is fantastic as always. The way you make the black spots and lines stand out on the b&w wood appeals to me. The graffiti on the other hand is rubbish. No offence to you, David. I suspect that if you had found another graffiti/tag, it would have been tremendous.

Luv the shades of blue in this random shot.

Earlier today, I showed my girlfriend the photo I intend to post tomorrow. She said she didn't get it. This mildly annoyed me so I'm resisting the urge to say the same about this shot but if I'm honest, it is what I want to say.
comment bydjn1 at 11:03 PM (GMT) on 27 April, 2006
Perhaps I needed to explain the title a bit better :-) It's a play on the ideas expressed by Magritte's Ceci n'est pas une pipe, though in this case the joke was meant to be that this is entirely a blog shot (whereas Magritte's point was that a painting of a pipe is merely an image of a pipe, not the pipe itself). I guess that a part of the (inside) joke was that photoblog's often seem random, so what better than a photograph of the word itself.
Anyway, I suspect that I was attempting to be a smart-arse with this one ;-)
comment byJamey at 11:07 PM (GMT) on 27 April, 2006
Yeah. Nobody likes a smart-arse. Get him, boys... ;)
comment bydjn1 at 11:12 PM (GMT) on 27 April, 2006
didn't really get the title untl you explained so I'm glad about that!!!
I wouldn't call this graffiti... its vandalism...
Ofcourse you could argue that the freedom to express themselves [the vandal] used tagging as the vent and thus create art of graffiti... But I think there is more more to graffiti than "random" words and this is why I don't class it as graffiti!

Smart or not, I feel that the bus to Chromasia has left. Not only am I too late to catch it, but my ticket has expired. It's been out of date well past a month now I fear...

Sometimes photographing the 'surface' can be just as revealing as photographing the heart of the matter.
comment byDennis at 07:45 AM (GMT) on 28 April, 2006
Since it has the word 'random' in it I felt compelled to comment :-) This shot is obviously mostly about texture and color and both are very pleasing. Tasteful processing, indeed!

very nice shot. love that blue-gray contrast here :)

The thumbnail looks better than the original. You did a great job, but i don't like the "RANDOM"-font. But that's my opinion. What i do like... the beautiful colors and the blured sharpness. I also like the image title you have chosen. An allusion to René Magritte.

Grafitti has the same effect on me. I simple have to photograph it. I especially like the Stencils that are very in fashion (if that is the right word :)

hahah j'adore le titre, ça me fait rire.
j'ai vu une fois sur un mur "ceci n'est pas un grafiti", très marrant.

Hi everyone, and hi Dave. I've been following your posts with much pleasure for a little while but this is my first comment. Firstly, great work - thanks!
Second, this really appealed to me as I've just finished reading a book on the surrealists and before that read Susan Sontag's 'On Photography' in which she writes a lot about the surreal nature of photography. I also have a strange obsession with photographing graffiti! Great post and, although I agree that the quality of the tag itself isn't great, it makes an excellent image in the context you've chosen to present it.
I wish I'd thought of doing this first ;)

This shot just doesn't quite "do it" for me. I like the colors and how the letters seem to be 3D, but something seems lacking....can't put my finger on it.

Hey David. I just thought you might like to know that on your about page. Top right, it says "chromasia.com/div>".
Theres something about graffiti photographs that I really like. This one really does it for me.

Thanks everyone, and I promise I'll make the joke a little less obscure next time ;-)
I think that you have a mistake in the EXIF - it says that you shot it with a 17-40mm lens, but the focal length is 140mm. But anyways, it's a very nice shot.
