In the year 2179, Amsterdam's computerised Bicycle System, the artificial intelligence behind the city's answer to the then pressing global fuel crisis, became sentient. Within a matter of minutes the bicycles began to evolve, within hours they turned on their creators.

Now, a little less than a year later, the last battles are being fought ... and they absolutely will not stop. Ever.

LOL, funny introduction. Beautiful capture and PP. This shot confused the heck out of me, until I realised it was a water reflection shot turned on its side. It always intrigues me when for crop you put "kind of" or "minor".......

comment by Benjamin Riley at 10:21 PM (GMT) on 5 May, 2006

I really like the colors on this one, but the composition doesn't seem to work as well.... I keep turning my head sideways (your are officially a pain in my neck....just kidding)
great shot!

comment by Karl Baumann at 10:25 PM (GMT) on 5 May, 2006

That´s great. I love this confusing shot. You´ve to look twice to get it. For me it´s much much better than yesterdays shot. I love this kind of photographs so much. For me the best shot of this week!

comment by djn1 at 10:29 PM (GMT) on 5 May, 2006

Jonathan: in this case "kind of" means it was originally shot in landscape mode, rotated into portrait mode, then the sky (now to the right of the bike) was stretched to put the shot back into a 3x2 landscape mode.

Benjamin: it just doesn't look half as interesting the right way round ;-)

comment by doreen at 10:39 PM (GMT) on 5 May, 2006

lol! looks a bit like a praying mantis

comment by Jim at 10:40 PM (GMT) on 5 May, 2006

I do quite a lot of cycling - given the price of petrol / diesel at the moment, this sort of makes me feel like the bike is there, all ripped and torn and bedraggled, only to rise up, and herald in a bright new dawn, of people cycling down to the newsagent instead of getting in their car for a 2 minute drive. No really, it does, it's not me just using this wonderful photo as a chance to get on my soapbox...

comment by owen at 10:40 PM (GMT) on 5 May, 2006

Awesome - took me ages to figure this one out. Funny caption too :) So who carries this one to the beach? You or John ;)

comment by Robert at 10:44 PM (GMT) on 5 May, 2006

Wonderfully confusing. I'd hate to go swimming at a beach where you find washed up bicycles, but I'd love to take a walk there with a camera. Super smooth blues you got working there.

comment by Moodaholic at 10:51 PM (GMT) on 5 May, 2006

Marvellous idea and so well executed and presented.

comment by Luisa at 11:19 PM (GMT) on 5 May, 2006

Brilliant idea, and brilliant execution.

This picture is fantastic. I think this is the best work you have done EVER!
I love the way you have made the water look like a mirrored wall.

comment by Dave F at 12:23 AM (GMT) on 6 May, 2006

I'm guessing there is some sort of reference in your description...hmmm...I can't quite place it. I could keep trying, but I guess I will just terminate my efforts ;-) Fantastic image again!

comment by micki at 05:08 AM (GMT) on 6 May, 2006

Wow, very creative idea! It does look a bit threatening.

comment by Sharla at 06:09 AM (GMT) on 6 May, 2006

That's almost exactly how I saw it! I did see more of a buglike mechanical being maybe, but close enough. Fantastic shot! Really love the flip. (Reminds me of those model-partly-submerged-and-pic-flipped type of shots.) It's so stunning that only a few words of the highest order are available for expresson and I've used all I have access to.

comment by peter at 06:22 AM (GMT) on 6 May, 2006

Hehehe - this one had me smiling. It almost looks like an insect of some sort holding on to the handlebars. Funny.

comment by heshe at 08:14 AM (GMT) on 6 May, 2006

Fun lil' story you had to Introduce your photo!

comment by mooch at 05:48 PM (GMT) on 6 May, 2006

Ah ha, now I like the crisp backdrop. Looks very studio. What I most like is the alteration to the perspective upon looking at your comparison. This definitely looks more intersting for that

comment by chiara at 06:04 PM (GMT) on 6 May, 2006

Wonderful image! One of my favourites! Great work.

comment by shooter at 06:10 PM (GMT) on 6 May, 2006

I have only just started visiting your blog. I have to say the standard you set is excellent, I love the variety and the quality leaps off the screen. This is not one of my favourites but is still well crafted, keep up the good work.

This is a really interesting composition. I love the colours and how you have offset the bike from the middle of the frame.
