As promised, here's the second shot of this section of groyne/beach taken one minute before yesterday's shot. For once, my wife and I are in agreement in that we both prefer this one, but do let me know what you think.
Oh, and this one definitely looks best with the black theme.
And finally: if you're interested, the original version of this shot is here:

Another amazing picture! it would be really interesting to see what the image looked like before you started processing it, any chance you might put up a small tutorial someday to give us novices a shove in the right direction?
Fantastic - you DID get the hattrick. All 3 of these shots have been stunning, this one is the best.
comment byAndrew at 07:15 PM (GMT) on 16 May, 2006
Ahhh, much better. I definitely prefer the way that todays was processed. A little more contrasty, and I like the colors in it. I often like monotone images, but for some reason this image is more suited to color.
comment byBenjamin Riley at 07:17 PM (GMT) on 16 May, 2006
I really do love this shot a lot better than yesterday's. The color range is amazing. I has a nice warm feeling to it.
Thank you VERY much for posting the original. I get depressed looking at your stuff sometimes because it's so good. I'm glad to know it's my photoshop skills I need to improve and not so much my photography skills.

Can I add my thanks to you too for posting the original! Please do it more often...
I agree; this looks much better. Like the pp. Nice one.

Very interesting to see this painting of light and a view into your mind's eye when you took this photo. Funny how particular you are about every detail, including that stick poking straight up in the sand next to the tie that you removed ;) And I agree with Scoop.

Fab - great to see the before and after - you must talk us poor mortals through the processing though. ;-)
same time? ( http://www.johnwashington.co.uk/index.php?showimage=705 ), *pardon me for linking in comments* -- I like the gentle slope of the beach, which is abruptly disturbed by the erosion barrier-- while at the same time, remainging ever visible just beyond it. Shame for the horrid skies!
this one is the best, impresive postprocess, I think would be very very great if you make a littler tutorial telling us how do you achive that with the original photo.
All of us are impressed....
Great job...

it's been a very long time you haven't taken any shot with your Lensbaby 2.0, David. ;) Would be lovely to see some of those!
p.s. hope that your wife is doing better.
I think I must be the only one that prefers yesterday's then, although this is still a very good photograph, IMO. The dodging on the wood is great (did you mask it to avoid a haloe on the line between the wood and the sky?) but the vignetting is a little too strong and I'm not a huge fan of the green colours throughout. Although this shot does suit the title (heavy light) better than yesterday's.

These three versions are an interesting study in the different reactions they each elicit from the viewer.
As to my own reactions, the original version cited below your introduction is pleasant, intriguing, inviting, and satisfying. This processed greenish version causes extremely unpleasant reactions similar to escaping oncoming nausea and makes me want to turn away. The monochrome version seemed remote and uninteresting.
I'm a great admirer of your work and of your use of mood and emotional content to connect you, your subjects and the viewers of your photographs. You achieve a blissfully pure and direct connection. Many thanks for sharing the fruits of your talents and insights and for connecting to us so directly.
i agree with some other comments, the postproduction is nice. yet for me it's a boring picture. there is nothing really interesting to see. maybe it's just me and my opinion ... and yes i have some boring shots too on my weblog but nobody says why? after some days after posting i thought "oh man, why did i upload this picture?!".
whatever, the most of your pictures are great, this one is boring for me sorry. greetings sushi!

Yep, its got the good angle and the nice colour that the last one was lacking. Cool.

When you posted the first image, I said I'd like to see a coloured verison of that and yes I also agree with you that this is the better of the two.

Yes I was going to say, I prefer this image. I think it's the addition of the green for me. Very moody too, which is slightly less visible in the previous.

C'mon Dave,
You honestly expect us to believe that you and Libby agree on a shot of yours. Clearly you are merely trying to placate her and speed her recovery, and deep down you really prefer yesterday's shot, because of the mono-tone; the crop; the lighting and the detail.
I, on the other hand, am in complete agreement with Libby, this shot is far superior because of the colours, the wood-grain, the grass, but mostly because of the near-horizontal groyne.
Vive la difference!!

I agree with Alex on the tutorial thing. =]
Also, this is a great shot. I'd have to say I like this one better than the previous. Very nicely done.
Yeah, I have to agree it's my favourite too, it reaches out and pulls you in. I find it more "emotional" than the blue one.
Coxcorns: félicitations d'avoir été le 1er, cependant vous n'avez pas d'autre commentaire à part ça? C'est un peu dommage.
The title you chose is perfect!
definilty the best version. And yes, it looks indeed best with the black theme. Very good image.
The greenish cast to the sky add a lot of drama and weight; looks like it's ready to burt forth with one angry storm.
Thank you VERY much for posting the original. I get depressed looking at your stuff sometimes because it's so good. I'm glad to know it's my photoshop skills I need to improve and not so much my photography skills.

I prefer this one, too. Again it creates a feeling of loneliness and silence.
MUCH BETTER than yesterday's....
the comparison with the original is fascinating. how do you go about adding the vignetting?
yeah i think that it works with white background but it was much better with black :) take care and have a nice day :)

By all accounts this should be a dull photograph, but you have brought it to life with the toning and vignette. I really like this one.
This is better that the last one. Dream like. Did you darken the grass on the left side?
Well I agree with both of you, and my very first thought was "I like this one better".
nice composition and beautiful tones. like this one better!
Very nice tone.
Thanks everyone.
Prefer this one as it looks more "complete".
I actually don't like the way it darkens around the edge. For once, I have something less than positive to say. It's still otherwise wonderful :)
