This is another one that was taken a while ago, though in this instance I have no idea why I didn't put it up at the time. Anyway, I'll be heading out to take some shots tomorrow so should have some new material to post ... fingers crossed.

Update: I know this one is going down pretty well, but I'm inclined to agree with Roy in his comment to the effect that this would have been slightly better if I'd shifted my focus to the left a little. Anyway, I can't add anything to the left, but I have moved the right side of the image over a little, thereby reducing the space to the right of the groyne. If you're interested, the original version I put up is here:

It's only a small change, but I do think this version is a bit better balanced.

So I go down to the sea
Where I will breathe air
Take back your piece of me
I let it bleed, yeah
Wounds held inside
Are blown open wide

Hey I am new to the site...
This picture is eye catching. I love to post processing

comment by Sean at 08:06 PM (GMT) on 23 June, 2006

Interesting tones you chose for the sky.

comment by shooter at 08:22 PM (GMT) on 23 June, 2006

Nicely processed, like the low view point and the framing, the sky looks as though you have applied a slight blur, but I think this adds to the dreamy feel..

This is truly a magical shot...question for you though. How do you get the dark halo around the edges of the photo. Is this a camera setting or post processing?

comment by John Washington at 08:51 PM (GMT) on 23 June, 2006

Very very good

comment by David at 08:54 PM (GMT) on 23 June, 2006

I like the post processing of this shot! Nice job !

comment by Karl Baumann at 09:16 PM (GMT) on 23 June, 2006

It looks like you and your camera get wet the next second :-)
I like composition, tone and the sharpness.

Awesome, stunning shot. Amazing sky and overall feel. Very nice indeed.

Amazing shot. Has some surreal feel to it - Salvador Dali kinda scape.

comment by Roy at 10:08 PM (GMT) on 23 June, 2006

Wonderful forms, good timing and great colouring. Only niggling thing is perhaps a wee bit too much space on the right. A slight pan to the left would have made the composition sit better for me.

comment by mooch at 10:13 PM (GMT) on 23 June, 2006

Is this a HDR image? I like the lead in lines + composition but th elight seems a little strange.

comment by Jamey at 10:19 PM (GMT) on 23 June, 2006

Yeah, that's lovely. Wish I could find something more interesting to say about it but I can't.

comment by croz at 10:19 PM (GMT) on 23 June, 2006

I like the wave hitting the dissolving and disintegrating groyne.. good geographical stock image to portray weathering in action.. the sky is very pleasing and works with the movement of the wave, the pebbles in the left foreground also compliment the shot and add to the overal feel of the seaside, vignette also adds to the melancholic mood

Awesome! Great shot. Have just ordered Martin Evening's Adobe PhotoShop CS for Photographers at your recommendation... let's see if I can produce something similar this time next week :-P

Great colours here Dave and I love the DoF, not too obvious but just right.

comment by Robert at 11:25 PM (GMT) on 23 June, 2006

That's really cool. I like the milky foam and the suspended drops in the air. The picture feels compressed, like there should be a little more width to it. I think it's just because the action's framed in a small area by the clouds , groin, shells, and left frame.

lovely..gret process..the splash was cought just perfect.

Awesome. Very Clifford Ross.

Hi Dave, this is the kind of shot you post that drives me crazy. I like a lot the toning (I suppose the blue curve adjustment you usually apply). In my light opinion the main subject of this pic is the strange rock(?), not the foam: its presence is much more eyecatching.

It's incredible how many photogenic objects you can find on your beach... :o)

comment by Alex James at 05:40 AM (GMT) on 24 June, 2006

You really do have an eye for photography. I love almost all of your work - Your PP is amazing! In this case though, I feel like the subject color blends in almost too well with the sand, not giving it enough definition, but you did manage to give it enough focus that the shot still maintains an awesome perspective. and on second thought, maybe i like that it blends in with the sand. I like the Symmetry with the rocks and the wave contrasted against the Piece of metal and the cloud...Good eye. Overall this photo is a great shot, 5 stars!
PS - How often do you usually use Polarized lenses in your work? You seem to have loads of pictures that have that look, but i doubt you use on all of the ones i think you do. Did you use one on this?
PSS - I've just started a photoblog, and it would really mean a lot to me if you wouldn't mind to stop by and just drop a line - maybe even a little advice! (Wow! that would be so cool - getting advice from David J. Nightingale!) Well, either way, Have a great day, and thanks for all of the inspiration!

comment by PlasticTV at 07:17 AM (GMT) on 24 June, 2006

The crashing wave is very interesting, though i can't make out what the object on the right is. i'll assume it's just another piece of rubbish washed ashore.

comment by moonhead at 08:32 AM (GMT) on 24 June, 2006

love all this post processing. Turns what could have been a dull shot into a piece of art. (I'm getting into PS in a big way as well). How long did this take in PS to achieve this result?

comment by Sysagent at 10:50 AM (GMT) on 24 June, 2006

This is more like it David, but I am sure you are now getting a little fustrated at everyone liking this style of shot that you are so good at as it will no doub't be limiting your "creative flow" behind the camera which is not a good thing.

comment by Jon at 11:42 AM (GMT) on 24 June, 2006

What a great shot. Love the processing.

comment by navin harish at 01:17 PM (GMT) on 24 June, 2006

This shot has left me speechless. Awesome is the only word that comes to the mind but it is also not good enough to describe it

This is a wonderful shot Dave! The tones, the composition, the post-processing - all works together so well!
