I'm not exactly 100% sold on this one, but I do like the contrast between the energy and movement of the waves and the detail in the pattern on the ball.

Update: John has also posted a shot of this ball today.

clapping.. !! wonderful.. true, the contrast in motion is striking... i am surely going to try this someday...

I do like the motion also, and the bubbles. Kind of cool.

Anything football related is good.

I like the shot but I'm not sold on the colouring here. It's a little bit too yellow for me. Otherwise good work.

Great contrast between the different textures here.

Ah, your own perspective on the wash-out that was the World Cup.....

Lovely shot. I personally like the yellow, I would have only used a slightly darker vignetting. For example, I like the vignetting on the top, but the sides and bottom brown out a bit.

This is of course a peronal preference ... as always. Nice shot djn.

Great detail in the ball, but the vignette seems-- forced? Not sure of the right word to describe it. I like the unexpected nature of the still ball in the rushing water.

Can't resist sending "Washed Up" as a title for this photo. Too cute? You had already wisely considered that and rejected it? Oh, well....

Love it.

Agree with you about the contrast in term of stillness and motion. Was this ball thrown by some disappointed English fan.

comment by Jonathan at 04:51 AM (GMT) on 24 July, 2006

What hits me is the stillness of the ball in all that chaos. Very nice.

Quite surprising the movemnent at that shutter speed. The ball makes a great contrast. Another of those shots that I envy the eye that spotted it in the first place.

like it. he's coming home? like the contrast between the structure (pentagons) of the ball and the motion of the waves.

Great aperture priority shot!

David,
Was it a matter of great timing that you captured the ball virtually not moving (or moving very little) while the waves were coming in?

At a shutter speed of 1/50, I'm marvelling at how sharp the ball is.

Thanks everyone.

As for the ball not moving: it was partially wedged between a few pebbles so wasn't moving a great deal anyway.
