First of all, thanks for all your (mostly) positive comments on the new version of chromasia: I'm glad you like it. And for those of you who didn't drop by yesterday: please have a look at my comments on yesterday's entry where I describe some of the changes I've made to the site.

One thing I will mention again, as it seems to have generated a fair amount of interest so far, we're developing a series of subscription based photoshop tutorials, centred around the images on chromasia, that we'll be launching towards the end of next month. The subscriptions should be reasonably inexpensive and if you'd like to read a bit more about them and register your interest, please take a look at this page:

http://www.chromasia.com/tutorials/

As for this shot: the beach at Blackpool is relatively flat, and what you see here is the incoming tide, a sandbank (on which these people are standing), and the sea and sky beyond that. I don't think they were aware of quite how fast the tide can come in as they ended up running through the water to get back to the beach. Two minutes earlier John and I had walked over dry sand to get to this spot, but by the time they ran across it was at least a foot deep. John has posted a similar shot this evening.

As always, let me know what you think. Personally, I like this one.

The still reflection is quite breathtaking ...

Nice divide too, I would say that is as close to 50/50 as you can get ;)

comment by Buffy at 11:43 PM (GMT) on 27 July, 2006

Oh WOW! Your work is always fine, but the colors and reflections and dividing lines in this one just hook me in. Congrats on your million words and I hope you keep making my aware of how beautiful our world really is for a long, long time.

That's just beautiful. Thanks for posting that.

comment by Deb at 01:56 AM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

" Between two moments, bliss is ripe" (William Blake).

You caught a ripe moment.

"The Man who never in his Mind and Thoughts travelled to Heaven is No artist." (Blake again....)

Yeah, I'm 'doing' him at the moment but if Turner had anything insprational to 'say', I might have quoted him instead. It's a digital Turner capturing a signature Blake mood.

Very well done, DJ. The picture is pure...therapy.

comment by dacian at 02:06 AM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Amazingly colorful reflection. I like the little spot of red for the setting sun; gives the image a little warmth.

comment by Ben at 04:50 AM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Great shot.
Such a beautiful, dramatic sky!

I really like the idea of you posting photoshop tutorials, since I often just look at a photo of yours and just wonder how the heck you do it! I'm sure I'd be one of your first, and most loyal subscribers!

comment by Aegir at 07:41 AM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Heh. Good job it wasn't Morecambe Bay, eh?

I really like this picture. How much of a temptation was it to try it upside down? :)

I like the new title reveal thing on mouseover. Much nicer than the old floating box.

comment by Eirik at 07:44 AM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

I'll join the bunch that likes the new chromasia :) In a photoblog, everything should focus on showing the photos with as little clutter and color around it as possible, and you've accomplished this just fine.

comment by Roy at 09:59 AM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Maybe you should add 'therapeutic images' to your business venture Dave, as this one would soothe the most troubled individual...
I think you've done a great job on the rebuild; the site is a pleasure to use and view in my opinion. There are many 'professional' sites that could learn a lot from your style. I wish you every success with the new ventures!

comment by Danielle_SC247 at 10:07 AM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

what could i say that has not been said already, it a magical image

comment by Kris at 04:38 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

What are you afraid of, reality? Why do you "overshop" your photos? Do they always need to be perfect? Imperfect scenes could affect us more. Much more, it's a taste thing but...

comment by Mark Ellis at 04:47 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

nice shot but not for me, overkill.

comment by bjorn at 05:01 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Hi David-
I'm a long-time fan of your photography and a big-time fan of this shot! Flip it upside down and fool everyone! Also, your new web interface is slick to say the least.

hi david.
This is it. I've been an avid fan since stumbling on your site since 'Born and Bred' last September. Never commented but this image has so many of the elements that make your work YOUR work. The colors, composition and presentation are all first rate djn. First rate and my most frequently (only) viewed blog. Thanks for doing what u do.

comment by Carol at 06:07 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Lovely lovely agree that it's one of your best - thanks for sharing :=)

comment by John Zeweniuk at 06:23 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

great photo! Awesome color. I like how and where the black line divides the top and bottom sections. And such a subtle sun you have to hunt for it.

comment by djn1 at 07:38 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Thanks everyone, I like this one too.

m i k e b: yep, the 50/50 split is pretty much spot on with this one :-)

Aegir: nope, in this case I didn't even think of flipping it ;-)

Kris: I'm a bit puzzled by your comment. What would you suggest I should have done instead?

bjorn: thanks, I've fixed it.

comment by swami at 07:41 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

comment by Kit at 08:06 AM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

Ever since the new redesign of chromasia, I cannot view the main page of your blog. It shows up in my browser as blank. I had to do some digging to get in the back way through the thumbnails page. Glad that I could get in at all, but I hope I won't have to go that way forever...

I am viewing your site with Safari on OSX10.2.9 -- hope that helps.

comment by m a r i n u s at 12:51 PM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

Well done, love shot here in the blue time of the day. Great composition. Shows also your photography skills were there isn't a typical chromasia style processing.
