First of all, thanks for all your comments on yesterday's shot, they were much appreciated.

Second, thanks again to everyone who's got in touch regarding the tutorials: it's good to see that they're generating some interest.

And finally, I don't have a great deal to say about this one other than that it was taken on the same trip as yesterday's. Let me know what you think.

I really like this image - great toning, use of sihouette and very dramatic skies!

comment by cw at 07:41 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Congratulations on the milestone! Hope you reach many more.

almost creepy, excellent tone

"Aliens are coming!" Very impressive, slightly frightening, strong feeling of "twilight zone"

comment by Tibs at 07:56 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Reminds me of some sculptures by Gormley that, I think, dissapear as the tide comes in.

Seeing yours and Johns beach shots tells me I should really get down to one and do some of my own.

Great work

comment by Mike at 08:03 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Great image with sense of movement and lovely tonality in the sky.

comment by djn1 at 08:09 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Tibs: I have three shots of Gormley's statues:

Sentinel #1
Sentinel #2
Sentinel #3

comment by Euan at 08:11 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

I like the sky, a mixture of smooth and hard lines. The solid figures fit in beautifully.

comment by Kevin at 08:19 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

very cool photo! excellent use of contrast

Another fine shot.

hi there

been visiting the site for awhile. did you just add a feature to disuade people from copying images to their computers? if so, why? also, the urls are still shown in the source.

thx

comment by djn1 at 10:07 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

asdf: no, it's a byproduct of the new navigation; i.e. I'm using a couple of transparent gifs to overlay the image such that I can add a 'previous' and 'next' link to each page.

comment by Andy at 10:27 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

I think this is one of the best shots I have ever seen.

I am slightly lost for words; It is so obvious why it is great that there doesn't seem much need to explain what I like. There is no superlative, or indeed emoticon, for this.

comment by Sil at 10:28 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

And thus humans came out of the seas to leave on land..

comment by Jamey at 10:36 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Definitely a very nice shot. Did you know the two people or are the silhouettes hiding the fact that they're looking at you with puzzled expressions, trying to work out why someone's photographing them? Also, have you done much masking or were you able to treat this shot relatively "whole", as it were?

comment by Danielle_SC247 at 10:41 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

Very nice. I love it. Clouds, beach, silhouettes... Can't go wrong. =)

comment by Dom at 11:07 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

I really don't know how you consistently come up with such great shots. You have an amazing ability to capture moments and great skill in post-processing. I know this has been said a million times before, but good work.

comment by milou at 11:37 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

That's quite some sky. And I like the little splash in the foreground. I guess these are the people almost stranded in yesterday's shot. Gormleyesque, assuming that such a word exists :p

comment by Deb at 11:41 PM (GMT) on 28 July, 2006

This shot makes me feel sad and as I said before...'wistful'.

It was conceived as part of a series? (with the image of the the boys racing into the sea that you posted the other day?) The former is a perfect pictorial allegory of halcyon childhood....this is ....mournful resignation to the 'end of that golden summer'. :(

I have no idea how 'skilled' they are technically but, even individually, they are poetry. Collectively they are great poetry. (And I hate saying that to you)

comment by David at 12:21 AM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

I love this one.

Super shot - great definition and tone, and superb composition. Fantastic!

comment by Jonathan - takethelidoff.com at 01:51 AM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

My favorite image on this site. It's amazing how you can now develop a whole story around this scene. Great capture.

Incredible with the black border too.

comment by shanec at 02:52 AM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

My jaw dropped on the floor the instant I saw it.... love, love, love it!!

comment by hannan at 07:21 AM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

Hi Dave,
My comment is not particularly about today's shot..
Im visiting ur website after 2 weeks...so i just saw ur cool beach shots..
i hardly ever comment..but i feel its my duty to appreciate ur good work...
Those beach shots (not today's one)really evoke the emotions..its the first time ive ever felt this way..about somebody else's photographs..u know somekinda very personal feeling..its like how you feel when u see a favourite portrait of yourself..you feel connected rite.. thats exactly how i felt(Phew i finally managed to get it right)
anyway keep up the good work!!

comment by PlasticTV at 07:44 AM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

Haha cute comment. Sometimes your humour can get so cheesy... in a very funny way. :) Love this low-key image, especially how you preserved details like the splash as foot meets water.

comment by Geoff at 08:40 AM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

Congratulations on the new site and ventures Dave. The site looks great. I am amazed how far you've come in the last few years, and I've been a very entertained visitor.

As for today's picture, it's first class..

PS> There seems to be a few problems with going backwards by clicking on the pictures. It's not working as it should. (XP SP2, Firefox latest)

comment by Manu (SF Daily Photo) at 08:46 AM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

This is my favorite of the latest stuff - very meaningful to me.

comment by Tibs at 09:24 AM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

Your pics of the Gormley statues are brilliant djn1

comment by Robert at 03:12 PM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

I think the positioning angle of the figures make the shot come together (and fit your title.)

comment by Michael Leonard at 03:56 PM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

David,

This shot is another ounce of proof that your vision with landscape and people photos is top notch. I would hope that you focus more on people and landscapes than rubbish in the gutter; your talent is second to none.

Great shot.

comment by djn1 at 07:43 PM (GMT) on 29 July, 2006

Thanks everyone.

Jamey: no, I didn't know them and they didn't seem too bothered about being photographed. As for masking: yes, there are two masked Curves, one for the foreground and another for the sky.

milou: no, this was a different group of people.

comment by Urvi at 08:20 AM (GMT) on 30 July, 2006

Beautiful shot. It's very striking with the dramatic contrast and I love the sense of movement with the man on the left.

comment by milo at 02:49 PM (GMT) on 30 July, 2006

just freakin' great

comment by Oscar at 07:33 PM (GMT) on 30 July, 2006

this is the most perfect composition!

comment by SteveO at 10:01 AM (GMT) on 31 July, 2006

Absolutely superb, they do look quite spooky coming out of the sea like that, your processing here is spot on.

comment by dennis at 11:29 AM (GMT) on 31 July, 2006

One of my recent favourites of yours David, very nice.

comment by kijal at 06:26 PM (GMT) on 1 August, 2006

Hi Dave,
Nice piece of work. The composition is good and luv the color. The tones suited the dark and featureless subjects. Like the way you position `em in this frame.

comment by marius at 01:07 PM (GMT) on 23 December, 2007

wow! i'm convinced now! i need a slr...no more bridge for me...super!
