As most of you know, very few of my photographs are literal representations of a scene: I'm just not interested in providing objective records of the world. Rather, what I aim for is some sort of interpretation of a scene, feeling, or event. Some attempts are successful, others are not.

This one, for me at least, works. Chances are some of you may find it a bit (delete as appropriate) blurry, abstract, and so on, but for me this sort of photograph works to evoke a mood in a more compelling way than many sharply focussed images.

I haven't posted the EXIF data because I thought you might like to speculate about the technique. What I will say is that other than the colour, and an adjustment or two for contrast, this was mostly achieved in camera.

I'll post the EXIF data later.

Ok, owen worked it out so here's the EXIF data, and as you'll see this was taken with a homemade pinhole lens constructed from a body cap, a UV filter and a laser cut pinhole with an effective aperture of f/180.0 – which makes composition a bit of a trial and error exercise ;-)

im gonna take a wild stab here. out of focus, high ISO (with NR). with that said, im not one this is partial to these sorts of blurry/abstract shots unless there is something to grab my eye. This one seems to lack something that really stands out. I mean. i see the (rocks/pier thingy), but my eye doesnt grab on and ends up losing focus. But i do like the toning.

abstract...

comment by djn1 at 08:51 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

mark: no. ISO 100 and it's not out of focus (as such).

comment by moodaholic at 08:57 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

Shot through your usual glass surfaces along the beach. Maybe some off-center focus point cropped aout?

comment by mark [markmyshots] at 08:59 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

hmm..not out of focus?...the part that really is interesting is the mottled looking noise...thats whats throwing me. Ok, my 2nd guess is a very opaque filter..and...um........hell, i dont know! :)

comment by djn1 at 09:00 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

moodaholic: nope, there was nothing between the 'lens' and the scene other than a UV filter, and it's a very minor crop.

mark: the mottled noise is in-camera too, and no filter (other than the UV).

;-)

im a huge fan. not everything should be focused. the texture in the sky is incredible and the toning compliments the emotion within the wave and foreground. i feel a series coming on... [i hope]. its simplicity lends itself to give the viewer his own interpretation and i like how you're allowing that possibility instead of forcing it.

comment by moodaholic at 09:05 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

Maybe it is shot through your glasses, Dave? I give up ;)

comment by Richard at 09:10 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

I like it. Reminds me very much of the D-Day landing photo by Robert Cappa (I am a HUGE fan of Cappa)

comment by Kevin at 09:13 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

Seems to me you handheld the camera at a slower shutter speed?

comment by rj at 09:16 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

very nice. has an old feel about it. No idea's how you achieved it though... photoshop noise filter? ;-)

comment by moodaholic at 09:20 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

Got it. I has something to do with rain.

comment by djn1 at 09:24 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

My glasses were on my head, it wasn't raining, the camera was on a tripod and didn't move during the exposure, and no photoshop filters were used ;-)

comment by moodaholic at 09:31 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

You focused on your hand, removed it, shot at f22 or what efter f-number leaving you with the movement at hand. Nice job ;)

I'll stop now ;)

comment by owen at 09:37 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

pinhole lens? I got similar results when I converted an old boy cap into a pinhole lens. I really like it however you did it.

comment by owen at 09:38 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

whoops, that was meant to say *body* cap :)

comment by djn1 at 09:41 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

owen: well done :-) I'll update the entry with the EXIF data now.

comment by AbsolutelyN at 10:11 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

Very different - this image has great mood!

comment by Chelsea at 10:25 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

Actually what I'm reminded of is some scene from and 19th century novel. So mood, this photo def. has it. :) Always a fan of your work.

comment by dave at 11:35 PM (GMT) on 4 August, 2006

Interesting as to how you achieved this image.. and an interesting image produced.

comment by Peter at 12:05 AM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

Reminds me of a foggy memory. Washed out, perhaps. Trying to grasp it, but not getting all the fine details.

Love it.

I can appriciate art like this. Why? I don't know, but I like it. Sometimes I create it, but very rarely, same for you Dave?

comment by Michael at 09:27 AM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

Nice camera obscura! Like the f180 and yet it's so unsharp ;) This gives you a idea how it was to photograph 200 years ago...

comment by thomas at 10:09 AM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

really great image. like your experiments with old and new technique.

comment by JD at 10:47 AM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

very nice ;)
I ordered a spare body cap about a month ago (still not arrived), but I was planning on doing pinhole photography with it ;)

Not going down the laser cut route tho, but more a huge hole and then using some sort of foil/paper/whatever which can be replaced to allow me to control the size of the hole (and thus the aperture a little)...

comment by lee at 11:23 AM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

really like this, lots of movement and mood, looks like a painting.

comment by micki at 12:27 PM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

I like these types of abstract images, and now that I've learned how it was created, I like it even more.

comment by Jukka at 04:55 PM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

Is this photo or art, or is it artphoto. Or are you just fooling around? :-)

comment by djn1 at 05:23 PM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

Thanks everyone.

Jukka: did you read my description? ;-)

comment by John Zeweniuk at 06:51 PM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

I like the way you have created an emotion and a consistency of tone and feel throughout. It is an evocative image, very beautiful.

comment by Jim S. at 07:39 PM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

Really doesn't work for me on any level...just a blurry out of focus shot with no real focal point.

comment by Robert at 09:17 PM (GMT) on 5 August, 2006

Reminds me of nor'easters in the winter - the whole beach is a smear of grey.

comment by Ash at 06:38 AM (GMT) on 6 August, 2006

i like it....like the loneliness of it....

looks more like a painting that a photograph....but works well for me

comment by Sandy at 05:33 PM (GMT) on 6 August, 2006

I love it! and the next one. You are always a tremendous inspiration:)

comment by Mark at 09:49 PM (GMT) on 7 August, 2006

I got one from the States last year but Im still experimenting ...

comment by m at 11:52 PM (GMT) on 7 August, 2006

I like this one of the 2 best!

comment by John at 12:57 AM (GMT) on 8 August, 2006

Now for the pinhole camera that adds the EXIF information to the recorded file...

comment by mooch at 03:53 PM (GMT) on 8 August, 2006

Always considered doing this but not. They did the worlds largest one recently, if I recall correctly. I think as a piece of work on a wall (i.e.) large scale this would be cool but I do find myself struggling for focus with this. For instance, I think the thumbnail looks rather good. No grafitti I note.

comment by mohammed adnenwala at 06:23 AM (GMT) on 21 August, 2006

I love pictures like this! It's like a dream...

I feel myself like in front this sea, with dirty skin blood, torn from cuts of blade, some deep other superficial ones. And sometimes the water arrives until me, and my skin burns. But I tighten the teeth, I feel burn and I make myself strong - because only in this way my heart's pain can deseapper. (sorry for my bad english, I'm italian so..)
