I didn't feel up to going out today, but didn't feel like not posting either, so spent about 30 minutes this afternoon taking shots of Rhowan, Camilla and Harmony. Of the 70 or 80 shots that I took I think this one of Rhowan is my favourite.
On a side note: when I showed this one to Libby her only comment was "... just a minor point, but I think you've overdone her eyes a bit". In this case though I didn't do anything to her eyes that wasn't done to the rest of the image; i.e. both Curves (contrast and toning) are applied evenly across the image.

David, your shots of your children are always amazing, and they are among the strongest of your photographic abilities. You at once capture the magic of childhood with the beauty and artform of photography - something many child photographers miss; they capture one or the other, but seldom both. Long may you capture your childrens' lives. On another note, that two days in a row I have landed first comment - what's going on???

Excellent. great tones, and a wonderful expression and gesture from your daughter. I don't think the eyes are overdone at all. They do stand out beautifully.

i don't think the eyes are overdone, they're actually my favorite part of the picture. so much power in those eyes, i feel like i did something wrong. EXCELLENT picture man!
great expression (dad, stop taking my photo!) but I would have preferred the finger tip to be in focus, this for me is the obvious focal point of the image (other than the eyes of course)
comment byEuan at 10:35 PM (GMT) on 7 August, 2006
I love the expression in her face. The eyes, her right eyebrow and the mouth together with her little finger. Beautiful image.
comment byJamey at 10:37 PM (GMT) on 7 August, 2006
Lovely. Can I request that you do "high-key portraits" as one of the early tutorials, please? It's something I simply have no idea how to do (without blowing out all the detail).
Definitely Chromasia style. This is the kind of thing I dont think I will tire of seeing here. Perfect processing and that of cause goes hand in hand with the excellent original capture.

I love this. It's amazing.
One point though - I agree with Libby - the pupils seem too dark for the rest of the photo... but it remains one of my definite favourites!

Terrific photo David. As soon as I saw it, I immediately knew that it was a special photograph. I like her face almost fills the entire photo with the focus on her hand. Definitely a favorite photo. :)

That expression really is a classic for kids at that age. :)
Did you intend for this to be high-key when you shot it? I guess I'm asking how much manipulation went into this in post-processing, a lot or a little, in terms of the exposure?
comment bychar at 04:12 AM (GMT) on 8 August, 2006
She is absoutely adorable! All of your children take the most gorgeous photos.
comment bysach1tb at 05:06 AM (GMT) on 8 August, 2006
beautiful shot! ... the focus on her tiny hand and the expression on her face...the tone.. and of course, the eyes. very nice..
i try to make shots and postprocessing like yours, but i fail everytime :(
just dunno how you got this "heavenly black and white feeling" (i mean... a right balanced tone, and a good contrast...)
any help? any tips?
anyway, i love your pictures :)

Thanks everyone.
Kevin: you'll need to type a bit faster tomorrow ;-)
nev: it might have worked better had her finger tip been in focus but this was a bit of a grab shot so I had to trust the autofocus.
Jamey: yep, I've added it to the list.
Judith: I suspected that this would end up as a black and white shot but wasn't sure about whether it would be high-key. As for the amount of post-processing: there wasn't a great deal. A black and white conversion with the Channel Mixer, the removal of some distractions from the background, and an overall adjustment for contrast.
jp: email me and let me know what problems you're having.
