Anyone who checked out John's site yesterday will know that Blackpool is currently hosting an international punk festival, apparently for the last time after a 20 year run. Yet despite there being hundreds of punks wandering around town this, unfortunately, is the only shot I managed to get. Maybe I wasn't in the mood, or maybe they weren't, but the whole "can I take your photograph" think just didn't seem to work yesterday.
Oh, and I couldn't think of a title for this one ... what do you suggest?
On a related matter: John has put up his shot of the guy from yesterday's image. Taken at almost the same time, but with a tighter crop.

Must admit, I thought the same as John. That screw in the bottom of her boot just does something for me.

that's a great shot...love the dof!

I wish that there were interesting people around for me to photograph, or maybe there are an I am just missing them, either way I love the picture, and the hair.

Been watching for a long time. This is one of my favorites in the past two years.

like john said I like the screws... wish you could make them out more on the boot in focus in the foreground tho...
Sad to hear about the lack of material from the occasion, but I guess thats just how it works sometimes!

Focusing on the boot makes the image: the people come and go from the punk scene but the iconic boot remains.

I agree with Robert - that's a good point indeed.

Thanks everyone.
Gabriel: out of interest, what kind of expression would make it less like a snapshot?
daniel: for me, the colour version didn't work. Their clothes weren't especially bright coloured, and there was quite a lot of distracting colour in the background.
Paul: thanks. I think I'll go for a variant of your suggestion.
Kat: from looking at your site it seems like there's at least one interesting person :-)
Robert/John: yep, I agree. Just wish I'd thought of it before taking the shot ;-)

I llike what you did here with the DOF. My first reaction was to look at the out of focus people and their expressions. Then I realize it is the boot in focus. Cool photo.

You know, I'm not sure. I think I would prefer it with an even smaller dof where their faces dropped out almost completely. At the same time though, I think my subconscious has something against happy people in art.

Gabriel: yes, I know what you mean, but I liked this one because it didn't fit the stereotypical idea of a punk portrait; i.e. stuck out tongue, surly expression, and so on. I take your point though.
comment byRoy at 07:59 PM (GMT) on 13 August, 2006
I like it; but I keep wanting to see more of the other boot lower right - then it would be a good advert for DMs...or maybe ScrewFix

This is one great image and I guess one of your better images. I like it more because it gives a break from the sea images which are now getting a little similar.

Leave's me wanting to see the faces and their expresions clearly

I thought a little less shallow on the old depth of field would be better. As for the composition and my overall opinion, I rather like this image. I like the focus on the foot and deep sense of scale. Rather interesting really. A candid... snapshot.

This picture is great enough. And somehow it looks much better with black background.
Interesting, The texture on the shoe is great and I like the toning, but their expressions almost make it feel like a snapshot.
Uuuuhaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Cool image.
have to admit, i feel that the sepia/b&w tone to this ruins it. Im sure the colours that both punks wore would have given the image more depth.
great dop tho
Title - 'This boot isn't on the other foot'
Still, you managed to get a nice photograph. I love that cross head screw that is stuck in the tread of her boot bottom right.
'Soul not Punk please!' ;-) Wonderful shot.
"talk to the foot"
Interesting focal point.
