I did think I'd processed all the worthwhile shots from my trip to the Wyre wrecks, but, as I didn't manage to get out of the house today, I thought I'd have a go at processing this one. Like the other four in the series, it's an HDR, composed of four original RAW files, one stop apart, and is taken from inside the second boat in this series.

Unlike the other four though I've gone for a much more dramatic feel with this one. And I know that some of you will find it a little over the top, but I'm really pleased with how this one turned out. All the more so because I nearly didn't bother processing it at all.

Anyway, this is definitely the last in the series, for the time being at least, so I'll have to go out and shoot something different tomorrow.

Oh, and this is definitely one that should be viewed with the black theme.

Blimey what on earth is this. It looks like a theatre set at first look. Very dark, could be a post holocaust image. The sky is marvelous. Still this said, not really sure about it. I cannot think what to focus on. Great ominous feel about it though.

pretty fantastic imagery.. looks like a scene in a video game.

you have the sens of making crappy locations attractive :)

comment by Judith Polakoff at 08:01 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

Whoa, that is fantastic!

comment by Ramsey at 08:09 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

Man! that is very cool. I just heard about HDR recently and just started playing with it. You can get some crazy effects but this one I like.

comment by Pete at 08:10 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

I absolutely love this - as someone has already said it looks like a scene from a video game. I was wondering if you'd been able to capture any interiors of the boats. Brilliant!

comment by dana at 08:24 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

amazing- this shot looks like its from a video game or something- it does remind me of the holocaust= an image i would get in my head---

it's so phenomenal for something that would look so depressing

comment by Lloyd D Budd at 08:31 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

This stimulates my mind!

comment by TC at 08:38 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

That looks great with the black theme.

comment by [ PIXEL VIKING ] at 08:53 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

Well, I guess this could qualify as a close-up, so thanks :) The sky looks a little odd, (colour-wise) but I guess it matches the colours of the ship. I love the fact that there's so much to look at and the framing is perfect. Can't believe you almost didn't post this...

comment by owen at 09:02 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

Incredible - it looks like a movie set.

comment by ks10 at 09:11 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

you know the films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro? "Delicatessen" and especially "La Cité des enfants perdus"? If not enjoy the colors ;-)

comment by sach1tb at 09:14 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

walla !!.. and with the black theme, it looks as if this came straight out of an adventure island movie - you sure did find a treasure ;)

comment by Gabriel Loeb at 09:17 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

This is the most interesting shot you've posted of the wreck yet. The dark, dreary colors really make this for me, but the texture and destruction that you see is fantastic too.

comment by Lex at 10:01 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

Great colours and DOF.

comment by Megan at 10:06 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

Wow. Perfect texture and color. I didn't know what this was at first. The sky in the background makes me imagine that it's still sailing. You amaze me every day.

comment by delphinE at 10:08 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

I'm surprised, like every day. I love to discover your views.
wondderful image, colors ...

comment by Alistair Parker at 10:11 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

I missed this shot because I was not athletic enough to climb over the bulwark! But I was instrumental in it's taking as I passed the camera and tripod up!

Fantastic surreal shot. How envious I am that I do not have this photograph. Return trip with ladder called for! If anyone has any doubts about HDR as a legitimate technique should be convinced by this image. Not a phrase I use very often but I am gob smacked by this image.

comment by Paul at 10:15 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

This is good, it's one of the better HDR shots I have seen. HDR is easy to do badly but to do it well is tricky, you pulled it off here.

comment by Jennifer at 10:20 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

Wonderfully OTT! My first thought too Owen.

comment by Mike Dougan at 11:03 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

Utterly amazing! what a fantastic shot, this has to be one of the best I've seen of your work (though Urban Space is still No.1)

comment by seriocomic at 11:47 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

That. Is. The. Shiznit.

By far one of your most impressive shots. There is so much atmosphere and drama in this capture, and your toning matching the pea-soup green to the rust really works. I a little more vignetting would have pulled the observer in a bit more, but that is the only suggestion I could make on this. Well done!

comment by Jeppe at 11:50 PM (GMT) on 19 August, 2006

Onward and onward I go, where no man should be bothered to go..

Lovely!

comment by EOS Chaos at 12:11 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

I like this one. The processing may be a bit heavy, but i think that's what makes the image work. It's really dramatic and looks like the scene of major disaster.

comment by Ben at 01:49 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Nicely done. Great post-processing, as always.

comment by geckonia at 02:33 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

This one is by farrrrr my favorite of the series. It leaves a lot to the imagination.

comment by Jason at 04:21 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

For some reason it reminds me of the set of a play. I REALLY like it.

comment by Colin at 04:28 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Awesome = my two bits.

comment by Robert at 04:32 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Theatrical, if they would make "Halo" into a play. This image makes you spend time studying all the details; you probably have ten other photos inside this one. I'm glad you decided to post it.

comment by paul at 04:35 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Wow! That's really amazing looking.

I don't suppose you would give us a little rundown on how you go about compositing the 4 images?

comment by peter at 08:19 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Why you didn't think this had potential to begin with is beyond me. I quite like this one. Well composed, spooky colours and loads of detail.

comment by Tobias at 08:23 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

I expected to see Sigourney Weaver come running through pursued by Aliens ! Very 'out of this world' - I like it !

comment by CurlyToes at 09:00 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Looks like the remains of a burnt down building. I like the processing, although the picture lacks a bit of sharpness; I don't know if that's the original or the processing that's done that. What a bleak photo, but in a good way.

comment by Thomas Solberg / Project neXus at 09:17 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

I really like the tones in this image and the angle is very cool. Nicely done

comment by Rog at 10:15 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Another fine addition to the series David.......really like it

comment by jonas at 10:56 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Where do you find all dead boats?

comment by tom at 11:36 AM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

another great HDR pciture! Thank you very much for your answer about the digital camera.

comment by Curly at 01:27 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

I'm like a few others who though at first that this was a shot of a theatrical scene. It's very nice clever HDR shot.

comment by Kat at 01:55 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

seems like a dangerous place to shoot, I'm glad you did though because the results are phenominal.

comment by bob at 02:07 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

HDR is bringing great results. I wonder what the scenery looks like in a "normal" photo?

comment by Simon Goodchild at 02:30 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Brilliant - love this series and this one in particular.

comment by Mary at 03:02 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

WOW!!! So much to look at; so much detail. Beautiful color I love this! Awesome.

comment by Claude at 05:56 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

I never saw a similar photograph. Great HDR shot. Beautiful colors and perfect framing. Really wonderful!

comment by Karl Baumann at 06:04 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

WOW, great surreal shot. I love the colors and the mess!

comment by Craig Wilson at 07:20 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Lots to keep the attention in this shot!

comment by rj at 07:49 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Great - my favorite of your boat shots

comment by Mike at 07:52 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Totally looks like one of the final scenes from Sin City, where they're all gathered at the end of the long alley and Clive Owen is holding Rosario Dawson as he throws the explosive head into the crowd... totally.

comment by Pete at 09:34 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

I paid a quick visit to these boats this afternoon - and your images have literally blown mine out of the water! How on earth did you get onto this boat without breaking your neck (or sinking up to it in mud?!). I guess you were wearing wellies because I came back covered in muck and smelling of fish :-)

Visiting these boats personally has really made me appreciate the effort you put into your post-processing. Think I'll be playing with photoshop all week now trying to match the quality of your photos!

comment by m at 10:04 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

Fantatstic, looks space age meets the industrial age meets b movie!

comment by Chris Pittock at 10:22 PM (GMT) on 20 August, 2006

How cool is this. Well I suppose it would be with no roof 8-)

Superb as usual.

comment by Mohammed Adenwala at 06:19 AM (GMT) on 21 August, 2006

Looks like a scene out of a scary movie!

comment by Steve at 03:58 PM (GMT) on 21 August, 2006

Yip, I really like this one Dave. Great colour, tone and chaotic, desolate (do they mean the opposite thing?!) image. Good shooting and pp.

comment by Dave at 05:57 PM (GMT) on 21 August, 2006

Awesome!

comment by Zee at 10:08 PM (GMT) on 21 August, 2006

It's so incredible! Surreal!

comment by Deb at 12:41 AM (GMT) on 23 August, 2006

You know, I think I've nailed what it is that attracts me to these HDR images....if Hitchcock had been alive and directing now, his stills would have had this light. Hyperreal. Innocuous scenes carefully infused with light of such starkness that illusions of heightened perception and paranoia ensue. Where all kinds of possibilities exist to explain the image....but you know that none of them are good or exist outside the 'shadows' of life. This particular shot reminds me a lot of Jeffrey Scott's industrial surrealism images...

comment by Jamey at 03:19 AM (GMT) on 25 August, 2006

That's really nice. I like it a lot, despite my previous rants about HDR.

comment by San Sebastian at 09:58 AM (GMT) on 26 August, 2006

Excelente picture, great colours . Nice job

I expect a mutant to jump out of the frame anytime now.
