This is one of the images I mentioned yesterday, that Camilla liked and I didn't think I could process. Anyway, I had another look at it today and came up with a version that I'm pleased with. I think the main problem I had with this one is that I had a preconceived idea about how I wanted it to look (bright, punchy, and so on) and the lighting conditions at the time just didn't work for that sort of image. Anyway, having processed it in a way that's more sympathetic to the original shot I think I've come up with a version that's ok.

On another matter, I'm selling my 70-200 f/4 L as I'm going to replace it with the f/2.8 IS. I'm selling it boxed, with the original manual, the optional ET-74 hood (not sure what this now costs, as I can't find one online, but suspect it's around £25.00) and a 67mm B+W MRC UV filter (which retails for around £30.00). Jessops are currently selling it for £489.00 (without hood or filter) so I'd be happy to sell it for around £340.00. The lens itself is in mint condition but the hood has a couple of minor scratches. Email me if you're interested.

Just to let you know that I've now sold my 70-200 f/4. Thanks for all the interest.

Related to that: the cheapest price I can find for the 70-200 f/2.8 IS in the UK is £1248.98 from shopping4cameras.com. I'm not sure that it will be cheaper anywhere else but if anyone does know of a less expensive source then I'd be grateful if they could let me know.

I can see why she liked it.

Guess it also goes to show that you can't always get what you want but sometimes have to let the image direct itself when it comes to processing.

If I had the £340 I'd maybe be tempted to buy that lens. But I'm skint. Another case of not being able to get what you want.

The 70-200 F2.8 IS is 1659$ US (about £875) at New York's bhphoto.com

What photosmax said. (Hm, I should have read the comments before looking it up myself!)

comment by djn1 at 10:07 PM (GMT) on 31 August, 2006

Picouto, photosmax and luminounlens: thanks, but I need the lens by next weekend at the absolute latest so am going to have to get it from somewhere in the UK.

If it were me I'd pay the bit extra and have it on 9 months intrest free from Warehouse Express! Lovely shot made me smile.

comment by rj at 10:56 PM (GMT) on 31 August, 2006

Hi Dave, I'll take the lense off you... I've been looking at buying one of these same lenses new from eBay, but having an official DJN lense is worth a little ware and tear :-p

Great shot, btw. For your new lense I can only suggest checking out http://froogle.google.co.uk/.

Will send you an email.

I don't know why, but always I click over the photo to see the previos image it takes me to the last one, I hate when it happens, does it only happens to me????

About the photo, It's great for me, makes me smile!

comment by rj at 10:59 PM (GMT) on 31 August, 2006

Adriana: that happens to me as well, I think it's a javascript thing

comment by ps at 11:05 PM (GMT) on 31 August, 2006

what a pity!

comment by djn1 at 11:31 PM (GMT) on 31 August, 2006

Adriana/rj: if you click the left side of an image it takes you to the previous one, the right side takes you to the next one. I should probably add some sort of visual clue to that effect.

comment by Boback at 11:37 PM (GMT) on 31 August, 2006

David, I buy all my lenses from Hong Kong. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Kea-Photo does the best damn deals, and hes selling the IS version for £1,020 something. Give him a go.

Fantastic shot Dave, the understated tone of the backdrop concentrates the eye on the subject.

You can visit B&H photo and here's the link:

It costs around 872.10 GBP/1659.95 USD

And all your pictures are really amazing as well as inspiring!! Keep up with the good work.

comment by Ben at 03:32 AM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

Wow, I can't wait to see some images with that 70-200 2.8 IS!
And I must say that I'm quite jealous ;) I have the f/4 version as well, and find it a bit limited - it's really only handholdable (at low ISOs) outside in direct sunlight. I wish I could indulge for the 2.8 IS version as well, but that's just not a possibility for me at the momen, though I plan on looking into the new (not yet available) f/4 IS version as well - it seems promising!

comment by ico at 06:41 AM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

Another magnificant shot that inspires. Great job you are doing with this blog. It really motivates.

comment by John Zeweniuk at 07:33 AM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

comment by dave at 07:36 AM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

well captured moment!

comment by Ash at 08:13 AM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

nice job! good save with the processing!

comment by navin harish at 09:23 AM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

Nice shot. Looks a little animated to me

comment by tobias at 09:56 AM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

I like it. Great energy and framing. Did you convert it to black and white to disguise the quality as you said you weren't sure that you could process it

comment by Jeppe at 11:37 AM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

Dave, providing us with the unprocessed images might increase our chances of buying those tuturorials - we'd see exactly how big a difference proper processing makes!

Otherwise - great shot. Love the contrast between dreamy, toned down backdrop and happy, toned down birthday girl.

comment by Tom at 12:34 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

Dave, I have purchased numerous items from B & H Photo in New York. They have been easy to deal with, honest, and fast. If you place your order by telephone they often give you an even better deal than what their website indicates. Not sure on international shipping, but at the lower price, they may be able to ship overnight and still beat your local prices.

comment by DAVE at 12:59 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

Yer killing me, how do you it ? =(

comment by Craig Wilson at 02:02 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

I can see why you wanted it to be a bit more "punchy" but I do believe you did well with this image. With the light being a bit drab, I might want to see a bit more drama in the clouds.

comment by PlasticTV at 07:40 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

Her expressions and pose give this shot a very lighthearted and cartoon-ish look. i can't help smiling. :)

comment by djn1 at 07:45 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

Thanks everyone.

As for the 70-200 f/2.8: in the end I decided to order from the UK company I mentioned as a) I need the lens fairly quickly, and b) didn't want the hassle of probably being stung for import taxes. Thanks for all the suggestions.

comment by chiara at 09:31 PM (GMT) on 1 September, 2006

What a great feel "good image"! Her expression makes me smile.

comment by bob at 09:17 AM (GMT) on 2 September, 2006

The photo bursts with happiness. I like it very much. On the left the wonderful animated and happiness radiating girl and in the distance lies the brooding isle of boredom.

comment by Adriana at 07:05 PM (GMT) on 2 September, 2006

It's amazing to see how your kids are growing, and how you keep up with the good work. I haven't been able to see all of your latest work but the things i've seen so far are great. Congratulations for the birthday girl

I've recently come across your site (and I'm new to the hobby) and I must say that the moments you've captured simply blow me away. I actually love the softness on this one as it hints more at a sense of movement. A very happy moment :)
