I shot this one a couple of weeks ago, but didn't get round to processing it until today, and I'm glad I did as it's turned out to be one of my favourite sunset/seascape shots in a while.

As for the processing: the sky is pretty much as per the original but the foreground was lifted by processing another version as an HDR image; i.e. it's brought out the detail and generally lightened the sea – it was underexposed in the original.

nice movement in the waves. makes me feel good after a 187.5 mile bike ride this weekend.

This is just superb. it gives me the impression of floating above the clouds. Just beautiful.

comment by Arthur at 08:30 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2006

Nice, though perhaps a touch high-contrast for even my high-contast taste...!

comment by Mike at 08:52 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2006

Nicely toned.

Really like this. The lighting throughtout is excellent.

The post processing of this is magnificent. As Arthur noted, it is high contrast but, but it seems to fit the image quite well. Not only are we given a sense of movement in the waves, but also a sense of texture, not something you often see in seascapes. I really love the way that the light waves in the foreground give way to a darker background, and of course, who could ignore that sky. Great shot.

very nice shot! I like the overall tone of this shot. great post processing

comment by Andrew at 10:17 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2006

Great processing. Dynamic range is really good. I like how much motion you captured as well. Not too much, but just the perfect amount to show some motion in the water.

i hate how good your photography is. this is awesome

comment by Jennifer at 10:32 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2006

Not a huge HDR fan - this however is fab (there was an audible gasp when I opened this page) so you may convert me yet!

What about the grey bacground?

comment by CurlyToes at 10:48 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2006

Great shot, indeed. The foreground is superb, although I think the sky lacks a bit of contrast, compared to the foreground.

comment by Xavier at 10:55 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2006

CurlyToes:

That diference is correct and it is called chromatic perspective. The atmosfere make impossible that objects placed in diferent distances are the same level of colour and contrast.

great perspective...great treatment for the photo

comment by John at 11:43 PM (GMT) on 18 September, 2006

Very nice. Must have indeed been a gray evening; it's almost grayscale.

This definately made me draw breath. Beautiful, just beautiful. Puts my photos of Blackpool sea to shame.

comment by Ben at 01:15 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

Great shot. Nice use of HDR.

comment by Dave F at 01:24 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

Sweet shot! Seems like the waters pretty chilly. The word foreboading comes to mind.

comment by Ross at 01:46 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

Wonderfull shot and very nicely processed. The bluring of the waves is perfect.

comment by Jeet at 04:16 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

good shot.. the movement of waves has really come out in this one.

comment by Ali at 06:17 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

nice shot, i like the tone in this. how do you process your HDRs? do you use merge to HDR in PS CS2 or you do it manualy in some way?

comment by Rog at 07:33 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

This is an excellent picture David and a good example of how HDR can make a great difference. That extra detail in the sea is superb.

comment by John Zeweniuk at 07:39 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

great shadows in the water... really brings out the texture of it

comment by peter at 08:11 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

I like the slight movement in the waves. It brings some action to the picture that is also processed very well.

Very calm picture, I should think of it when things become difficult....

comment by thomas at 09:28 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

like the stormy water as a main part of the image. great bw-processing.
regards

comment by Thomas at 11:50 AM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

Although BW is usually not my cup of tea for landscape shots, this one is really impressive. The exposure and timing is just perfect. Some blur around the waves, but not too much, just the perfect amount!

comment by Paul Courtney at 01:05 PM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

Hi Dave,
Another of my favourite type of 'wide-open spaces' shots. I love the idea that you've merged a HDR to pick up the sea tones. My only criticism would be that I'd like to have seen it with the 'Nightingale Blue' finish as in 'Open to Huge Light' and 'The West Wind'.
Nice work

comment by jelb at 01:50 PM (GMT) on 19 September, 2006

Bonjour,
Nice picture! Its reminds me the photos and films of years 1940-1950 (the tone)..Strange!

comment by travis at 02:56 PM (GMT) on 21 September, 2006

Beautiful Dave! I sort of wish the water ended earlier. The waves are so whimsical.

comment by Rocketfoot at 10:14 PM (GMT) on 26 September, 2006

really like this though did you try in full b+w? think it could make a starker image and maybe even more contrasty. really nice 'wave shapes', was this taken from the pier or at sea??
