Three weeks ago today I mentioned that it was the start of the International Fireworks competition is Blackpool. Every Friday since then there has been a display: from Croatia, Italy, France and China. I also mentioned that a) I'd put up a shot from each display, and b) it would be a creative interpretation of a fireworks shot. Well, as the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed, I only posted the first rather odd one, and there haven't been any since up until this one, from China's display earlier this evening.
I have been photographing them, but I was commissioned by Blackpool Tourism – which has been great – but I haven't had too much leeway to experiment (the displays only last for about 25 minutes) so have taken quite a number of standard fireworks shots, which were fun to take, do a good job of showing the fireworks in relation to Blackpool Tower and the pier (from which they were launched), but I haven't felt like posting them here.
I think that the main problem is that I don't much like images of fireworks. They're great fun to shoot, but not overly riveting to look at, so up until this evening I haven't produced anything I felt like sharing. This one though, I like a lot more.
In previous weeks I've shot from the beach, but tonight I was on the pier alongside the crew who were launching the display and this is one from about 140 shots, taken at f/16 with an exposure of two seconds.

Excellent - congratulations on the commissioned work as well. Tonight's display was easily the best out of the 4 weeks - they went for sheer firepower tonight!
This is a cool photo because not many people would've seen them from this angle. It's almost surreal seeing these fireworks at the end of a deserted pier - in one sense it's tranquil, and in another all hell is breaking loose!
comment byToxic Lens at 01:07 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006
I agree, fireworks photos never look as good as we think they should. I think the noise and smell and motion of fireworks is what makes them exciting. Photos just don't capture the whole experience. You did well with this one though. Those colors are nice and crisp!
comment by Bob at 01:40 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006
Surreal and very, very lovely.
They're lucky to have someone of your talent and creativity for this shoot. I'm sure the contracted shots were equally killer, and a noticable change stylistically from years past.

Wow, stunning shot. The only thing that detracts from it at all for me is the post at the left being cut off. Otherwise, I'm extremely impressed.

i must agree that it is quite hard to find photos of fireworks that qualify as stunning. i do believe that you did cross that line with this shot. the fireworks are great, but the setting in which they are displayed really make this shot for me. i find myself staring at how everything on the ground is lit and shadowed more than the fireworks themselves. great job.
comment byAndrew at 03:24 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006
thats amazing, the best fireworks i have ever seen
comment by maria at 03:45 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006
I agree with you Dave that photographing fireworks is pretty tedious, take for example festival of light in Vancouver where 1.4 million people line up on the beaches. It is impossible to get a good picture because someone always bumps into tripod. I love how you took your picture. I wish I could take it from the dock too but in Vancouver, they shoot the fireworks from the middle of the ocean.
comment by Sharla at 03:52 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006
I do not recall ever seeing a better fireworks shot. Outstanding. The layering of subtle foreground detail and enough light to mildly light the area also goes a long way. I assume the radiating red lines are lasers. Odd how important the smoke was to make this shot, both for the lasers and the glow. I'm a little surprised that 2 seconds didn't show more drift in the sparks but it's good that it didn't. Just outstanding.

Wonderful shot and great colours! Perfect exposure and shutter speed choice.
Pretty interesting shot... Nice exposures throughout. The only thing I'm 'against' is the square crop. When I think fireworks (and the landscape shot that accompanies it), I think of a fairly widescreen/horizontal shot.
Would be interesting to see another crop option. Otherwise, pretty darn fine image, David.

I was there on Friday Dave Tripod in position on the beach right at the limit where they would allow you to go.
Managed to grab some 1/2 decent shots also @ about 15secs exposure f/11, will give you a nudge when I start sticking them up on the blog if you are interested.
This is a great representation shot of the display and the fireworks look like Laser beams or something.
comment bypicturegrl at 03:38 PM (GMT) on 24 September, 2006
I've never been a big fan of fireworks shots either. I don't like shooting them at all and have stopped carrying my camera in recent years. In this image though, you've managed to solve the problem -- most fireworks shots have no foreground interest unless they are city skyline shots. The straight lines coming from the ground, coupled with the rule of thirds composition makes this extra nice, as does the variety of colors. I don't mind the lamp, and I dig the square crop. Fine job, David.

This is an amazing photograph. Whenever I try to take pictures of fireworks, the color and image never appear as it does in person. It's amazing how the lights of the fireworks light up the entire sky and make it appear purple. The location of where you took the picture is also good because there's no one around on the pier, and makes the sceen seem almost calm in a way.
