Three weeks ago today I mentioned that it was the start of the International Fireworks competition is Blackpool. Every Friday since then there has been a display: from Croatia, Italy, France and China. I also mentioned that a) I'd put up a shot from each display, and b) it would be a creative interpretation of a fireworks shot. Well, as the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed, I only posted the first rather odd one, and there haven't been any since up until this one, from China's display earlier this evening.

I have been photographing them, but I was commissioned by Blackpool Tourism – which has been great – but I haven't had too much leeway to experiment (the displays only last for about 25 minutes) so have taken quite a number of standard fireworks shots, which were fun to take, do a good job of showing the fireworks in relation to Blackpool Tower and the pier (from which they were launched), but I haven't felt like posting them here.

I think that the main problem is that I don't much like images of fireworks. They're great fun to shoot, but not overly riveting to look at, so up until this evening I haven't produced anything I felt like sharing. This one though, I like a lot more.

In previous weeks I've shot from the beach, but tonight I was on the pier alongside the crew who were launching the display and this is one from about 140 shots, taken at f/16 with an exposure of two seconds.

1x1 + piers [North pier] + night shots [long exposures] + fylde coast [scenic]

Beautiful stuff, DJN: perfect exposure.

Wow!!! Dreamy!!

comment by Pete at 01:03 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Excellent - congratulations on the commissioned work as well. Tonight's display was easily the best out of the 4 weeks - they went for sheer firepower tonight!

This is a cool photo because not many people would've seen them from this angle. It's almost surreal seeing these fireworks at the end of a deserted pier - in one sense it's tranquil, and in another all hell is breaking loose!

I agree, fireworks photos never look as good as we think they should. I think the noise and smell and motion of fireworks is what makes them exciting. Photos just don't capture the whole experience. You did well with this one though. Those colors are nice and crisp!

comment by Bob at 01:40 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Surreal and very, very lovely.

They're lucky to have someone of your talent and creativity for this shoot. I'm sure the contracted shots were equally killer, and a noticable change stylistically from years past.

comment by Mike Dougan at 02:51 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Just perfect!

Beautiful colours.

comment by Geoff at 03:02 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Wow, stunning shot. The only thing that detracts from it at all for me is the post at the left being cut off. Otherwise, I'm extremely impressed.

comment by Gabriel Loeb at 03:13 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Wow, this is really beautiful. Absolutely stunning shot, there isn't much more to say. Great capture.

i must agree that it is quite hard to find photos of fireworks that qualify as stunning. i do believe that you did cross that line with this shot. the fireworks are great, but the setting in which they are displayed really make this shot for me. i find myself staring at how everything on the ground is lit and shadowed more than the fireworks themselves. great job.

comment by Andrew at 03:24 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

thats amazing, the best fireworks i have ever seen

comment by maria at 03:45 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

I agree with you Dave that photographing fireworks is pretty tedious, take for example festival of light in Vancouver where 1.4 million people line up on the beaches. It is impossible to get a good picture because someone always bumps into tripod. I love how you took your picture. I wish I could take it from the dock too but in Vancouver, they shoot the fireworks from the middle of the ocean.

comment by Sharla at 03:52 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

I do not recall ever seeing a better fireworks shot. Outstanding. The layering of subtle foreground detail and enough light to mildly light the area also goes a long way. I assume the radiating red lines are lasers. Odd how important the smoke was to make this shot, both for the lasers and the glow. I'm a little surprised that 2 seconds didn't show more drift in the sparks but it's good that it didn't. Just outstanding.

After taking a break from both photography and keeping up on my RSS feeds, I thank you for your recent posts. Tomorrow will be the day I pick my camera up again...

comment by Richard Houtby at 04:50 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Wonderful shot and great colours! Perfect exposure and shutter speed choice.

comment by Jessyel Ty Gonzalez at 05:04 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Pretty interesting shot... Nice exposures throughout. The only thing I'm 'against' is the square crop. When I think fireworks (and the landscape shot that accompanies it), I think of a fairly widescreen/horizontal shot.

Would be interesting to see another crop option. Otherwise, pretty darn fine image, David.

comment by Justin Blanton at 05:38 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

I really like the perspective in this shot. Well done Dave.

comment by Karen at 05:38 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Wow, really nices. I usually just see photos of one or two fireworks in front of a black sky, but this is so different. Excellent exposure!

comment by Louise at 07:25 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Pretty amazing photo... certainly different from the usual firework photo...

comment by Jeet at 07:44 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

amazing photo !!

comment by Jennifer at 08:36 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Brilliant

comment by Robert at 09:07 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Excellent. I love the geometry of the fireworks. Like giant feathery fans.

comment by Jon at 09:13 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

comment by thomas at 09:30 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

what a beautiful fireworks-image. but i ask me, why wasn't people at this place. the view is fantastique. tell me.

comment by Samarth at 09:50 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

i agree....i think fireworks aren't really that captivating to look at until you've done something special with them....this is special....liking the silo a lot and the fact that theyre all shades of red.....8.5/10
cr=8/10
p.s. check out this one by my friend azhar, again its something different with fireworks

Absolutely excellent and you don't even like firework photographs!!

comment by mooch at 11:57 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

That's more like it. IT's in colour, you have alittle interest to the foreground to give context. It looks ace. This really is dynanmic. The foreground makes it for me.

comment by Effective Pixels at 12:29 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Just.. wow!

comment by John Washington at 12:33 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Because I didn't do it

comment by javga at 01:18 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

BANG!.. B...B...BANG!BANG!BANG!
In other words, this shot blew me away!!!

comment by Raymond Tse at 02:08 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Sensational - better than any fireworks scene that I've ever seen. The sky looks like it's painted in red & light.

comment by Andrea de Keijzer at 02:24 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Abslutely Fantastic!

comment by Karl Baumann at 03:09 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

great work, looks like a big party :)

comment by ian at 03:53 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

That is great! One of the best firework shots I've seen.

comment by jezblog.com at 04:10 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Hey Dave that spiel is so down beat on what is a really great image! I love the dreamy atmosphere, with no obvious crowds of an event, its really has a dream quality. Nice one.

comment by Stephan van der Wulp at 04:34 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

It's special! I prefer the read and streedlambs on the front!

comment by m at 05:59 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Fab shot. You're wrong to be disapointed.

comment by Gerome at 07:12 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Technicalluy this is a good picture and i am sure that blackpool council is pleased. However artistically i feel it is lacking.

comment by pierre at 07:13 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

waw, the colors are incredible

comment by samantha at 09:19 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

quite possibly the most beautiful fireworks photo I've ever seen. No one really seems to capture the beauty and childhood wonderment of exploding colored gun powder like they should.

Kudos!

comment by djn1 at 09:51 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2006

Thanks everyone.

comment by PrashantP at 08:49 AM (GMT) on 24 September, 2006

Fantastic photo - makes me want to drive up to Blackpool this Friday and try my luck

comment by Sysagent at 10:23 AM (GMT) on 24 September, 2006

I was there on Friday Dave Tripod in position on the beach right at the limit where they would allow you to go.

Managed to grab some 1/2 decent shots also @ about 15secs exposure f/11, will give you a nudge when I start sticking them up on the blog if you are interested.

This is a great representation shot of the display and the fireworks look like Laser beams or something.

comment by picturegrl at 03:38 PM (GMT) on 24 September, 2006

I've never been a big fan of fireworks shots either. I don't like shooting them at all and have stopped carrying my camera in recent years. In this image though, you've managed to solve the problem -- most fireworks shots have no foreground interest unless they are city skyline shots. The straight lines coming from the ground, coupled with the rule of thirds composition makes this extra nice, as does the variety of colors. I don't mind the lamp, and I dig the square crop. Fine job, David.

comment by Jon at 06:09 PM (GMT) on 24 September, 2006

I gotta comment on this one. This is a pretty special shot. Great timing here

comment by Alice at 09:18 PM (GMT) on 24 September, 2006

Beautiful! Fantastic colors and composition! Very well done!

comment by JH at 10:38 PM (GMT) on 24 September, 2006

Stunning shot!
Great variety of colours and fine foreground with the pier and lamps.

"wow" the first thing i said when i saw it. im still amazed. it makes you feel like youre at the scene. very very cool.

comment by Paul Woolrich at 03:06 PM (GMT) on 1 October, 2006

This is very well taken the exposure looks perfect and the colours are very nice too.

comment by Marina at 08:09 PM (GMT) on 4 November, 2006

This is an amazing photograph. Whenever I try to take pictures of fireworks, the color and image never appear as it does in person. It's amazing how the lights of the fireworks light up the entire sky and make it appear purple. The location of where you took the picture is also good because there's no one around on the pier, and makes the sceen seem almost calm in a way.

comment by sophie at 11:49 AM (GMT) on 6 March, 2007

Wow! Now that's what I call a fireworks display. That's THE grand finale of all grand finales. Excellent shot!

comment by Diana at 12:38 PM (GMT) on 27 October, 2009

It's b-e-a-utiful the lights blaze right at you and i just wish was there to hear their melody of music, to see them dance with the stars. A new world you get driven to and you imagine what harm gun powder would have done. We wouldn't have the houses of parliament or get to live and jive with them on the 5th of November!!!!!!!!

LOVLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!
