This is Nina Oller-Stracey, a producer and director for Centini (a Manchester based telivision company), and Dave, her photographer. I met them both yesterday as they were interviewing me for a forthcoming episode of Go North West which will be broadcast some time around next June. We talked about the different reasons I find Blackpool inspirational and the public art along the South Promenade.

Very cool. (The story and the pic) I like the tone of this image...especially since it was taken in bright sunlight. nice job.
comment byEric at 08:34 PM (GMT) on 27 September, 2006
As usual interesting tone. I think I'd have shifted the frame a little to the right to capture their shadows. I can't wait to see the special - I hope I can get it here in Texas.
comment bySean at 08:43 PM (GMT) on 27 September, 2006
Great depth and lack of hue. Puts kind of a post-modern-post-apocalype feel to it, with lack of better words to describe. I especially like the long shadows.

Returning to the two previous photos. I've no problem the content ... but the task of ' 'guess the image'' seems rather unecessary. Discusssion on composition etc etc is far more valuable. OK ... I do realise that someone will say ''it's only a bit of fun''.
Yes I am smiling.

I like it, it's a little plain and doesn't evoke that much thought from me but a nice photo all the same.

Love the dull/muted tones.

I agree with people here - really nice shot but what an interesting tone. Any chace of telling us how it was done please ?

Good composition! Too bad that it will not be possible to see the interview here in Portugal! Wait... maybe it will be possible after all. Thank God for the internet.

nice tones but I almost find the bird a distraction. You'll have to stream the interview on your website so we can all see it :)

I love the light in this shot, quite harsh but the edge has been taken off somewhat with the toning, my favourite that you've done for a while this.
comment byGabriel Loeb at 11:55 PM (GMT) on 27 September, 2006
As you know (from the title), the light in this shot is awesome. The sunglasses and the woman's expression really top it off for me. She's staring into the the light, and he's capturing whatever is happening. It's almost as though they are about to be engulfed by a wave of light. I love that something is left to the imagination, I can make this my own even if they are just filming the sun.
comment byRichard Clafton at 12:12 AM (GMT) on 28 September, 2006
I like it, but would have liked to see them shifted to the left side of a wider frame with longer shadows. Nice though. And having just moved from the UK to Texas... I will probably miss the show. Pity.
comment byMP at 12:30 AM (GMT) on 28 September, 2006
the seagull... your trademark?

I love the muted tones to this image... like it was a blue duotone was overlayed on top.

Amazing colours, as always.

Please do tell us how you went about that tone, I have seen it used quite a few times in daily dose of imagery (2 of your fans in Reading await your answer!)
comment by Sova at 06:02 PM (GMT) on 28 September, 2006
how did you manage to get such tones? what "PS moves" did you make? : )
comment bydjn1 at 09:43 PM (GMT) on 28 September, 2006
Thanks everyone.
As for how it was done: I used the Channel Mixer to desaturate the image then set the opacity to around 80%. After that I toned the image using a Curve, then boosted the saturation with the Hue/Saturation tool.
comment byKatie at 11:39 PM (GMT) on 28 September, 2006
I agree with everybody about the tone. It just makes it. I'm in disagreeance about the composition though. I really love it. I love that the shot doesnt' focus on the shadows because its about the light. And I love that they are placed to the right of the shot because it sets the stage for the subject and the movement. My favorite part of the shot is how it looks like they are standing at the edge of the world. I see nothing but clouds in the background. That along with the tone and lighting really set this shot apart, and give it that apocalyptic feel that someone previously mentioned. Really great post-processing. Love the shot.
