Yet more archive raiding I'm afraid, but, upon revisiting this one, I've decided that I quite like it.

Oh, and there's something very unusual about the post-processing of this one ... can you work out what? ;-)

not my favorite picture of yours, I love the concept, but i would like to see just a tad more detail in her head scarf and/or coat. can't work out whats unusual about the post processing though.

is it that there is none?

I love the silhouette, especially that there is a hint of detail still remaining. Also, the light on the water is just gorgeous, it really leads your eye out to the horizon. The sky is a bit bland, but I guess you can't win them all. Nice capture.

looks extremely dark for a 3.12pm shot. i guess the idea was to create a moon lighting effect.

roy: yep, you got it. Just for once I didn't do anything other than a minor rotation and crop.

This means your 20D chromasies the images in camera!

Absorbed in thought. Nice.

I don't know how i could tell - maybe its the colours - there's nothing extreme about the hues if you know what I mean.

This has severley lacking composition too. There is just too little focal interest within the frame. I am tiring of expanses of sea too...

Looks a bit like my grandmother but as she has been dead about 25 years I suspect that may not be. Although anything is possible with digital photography these days. I like it, an interesting silhouette.

I tried something similar (high shutter speed for underexposure in sunlight) at the beach this past weekend, but it didn't work worth a hoot. Your image does a great job of giving the feel of bright moonlight.

i'm afraid when we're out of stuff and we raid the archives we would like anything (that we hated before) that happens to me at least.

I'm a coward when it comes to taking pictures of people I don't know. Do you tell them? Or just take the photo? And when it comes to publishing them, is it okey to publish photo of people who dosen't know about it? I saw such a sweet old man taking a nap on a parkbench the other day, stood there watching him and just fingered the camera in my bag.

I must admit, that the first thing I thought when I saw this was: "Oh, David must be sick. He's outting up old rubbish."

So no, I'm not a fan of this one. The silhouette blends into the fence and it's very chunky. The sea is nice I suppose. I'm sure you have lots of great shots in your archive though, just not this one :)

I like the tone in this! While not one of your best - its got a quality to it that I really like.

comment by Karl Baumann at 02:43 PM (GMT) on 11 October, 2006

I like the bright sea and the dark silhouette, but it's not really one of your best:)

I'm not sure why a lot of people are not too keen on this shot, I think it brings out thought & emotion, rather than a pretty picture. I think this is superb, it made me think. It's almost as if she is reflecting on something, and the fact that she is staring out to sea makes this all the better. Nice one Dave, I love it.

Well, I don't know a thing about post processing, but this is a beautiful image! I can't believe you held on to this one without posting.

I really like the tac-sharp silhouette and the depth of field is really nice. The thousand stories she's dreaming about are reflected marvelously in the softness/dream quality of the sea. Great, great concept.

I was thinking about this image a little more and this is the story I associate with this image. The fact that this story is what I see so vividly in this image is what makes me like it so much.

"Looks like an old woman looking out over the sea thinking about the 'thousand stories'
that she has lived. The soft focus of the water makes it seem that she's in a dreamy/thoughtful state. But because of the dark/blue tones makes it seems sad as it appears she has no one to tell them to."

My mother researches care for the elderly and that is often the case when those assisting them (nurses, aids, etc.) don't listen to them. They just do their job and move on... they don't see the elderly as the people they are with the amazing stories they have.

comment by John at 05:13 PM (GMT) on 11 October, 2006

Nice image. My favorite part of it is the fact that you can see through the right lens of the glasses she's wearing.

comment by Andrew Parker at 10:58 AM (GMT) on 12 October, 2006

I like the fact that the way the lady's spectacles are portrayed here, the old woman could infact be doing two things: standing still looking out over the sea or actually walking past, do you see it?
