I've spent the last two hours attempting the photographic equivalent of turning a sow's ear into a silk purse, and have finally admitted defeat, so here's one of Libby, Finley, Harmony and Rhowan instead.

Wow, what a cracking shot. Love the vibrant colors and the contrasts between the outfits. And I can't believe your little man is walking already!

comment by jennifer at 09:57 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

I love it! and no I haven't been on PC all day ;-)

comment by peter at 10:09 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

A fine photo for the family album. The colours pop and I like the way everything but your family is blurred.

comment by Jamey at 10:16 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

Is this part of the series you did for The Ramblers? Regardless, I quite like it. If the background wasn't blurred I think I'd feel differently, mind. How did you saturate the colours so richly without blowing them out of gamut (ie clogging up into pools of solid colour)?

comment by John at 10:18 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

Nice shot, love the colours. Also love how the image is focused and composed.

comment by Arthur at 10:19 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

Lovely!

1/60 sec at 224 mm? You should add an ‘IS mode’ field... ;-)

comment by djn1 at 10:31 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

jennifer: :-)

Jarama: yep, time flies. He's 14 months old now, and it doesn't seem long since I announced his birth.

Jamey: yes, it was shot for part of that commission. As for the processing: a Curve to adjust the contrast and a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to increase the saturation in the yellows and blues and decrease the reds.

Arthur: the IS is amazing. With the 70-200 f/4 I would have needed a shutter speed of around 1/200th for this shot.

comment by Graham at 11:05 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

Contrary to wanting the background sharper I think this composition is great for the following reasons:

The subjects are walking into the picture, your eye follows them across the grassy edge which acts as a focal stop before continuing on to discover the house on the distant plane.

Libby, being taller and on the left, stops your gaze from going further left and then the stronger hues of the clothing bring you back into the picture again to discover more recessional tones to the distance.

I do like this one, David, and the enhanced contrast just makes it special - a good result.

comment by Ben at 11:31 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

Love the colors. This is just an overall beautiful shot. Great job.

comment by mooch at 11:36 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

I can tell that this image was shot on an overcast day and you have tried to up the saturation. How come? That grass looks artiicial, as though nuclear waste fell on it. I know as I tried to rescue a similar image. Still, nice composition.

comment by Arthur at 11:47 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

With the 70-200 f/4 I would have needed a shutter speed of around 1/200th for this shot.

Oh, believe me, I know!!

Did you consider the 70–200 f4L IS? With your apparent preference for shooting at >f5.6, it’s effectively the same lens at half the weight...

comment by Jelb at 11:54 PM (GMT) on 2 November, 2006

Bonjour,
Nice photo..and family..I like frame, exposure..(sorry for incorrect English!)

comment by djn1 at 12:19 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

mooch: do you mean this one?

comment by djn1 at 12:25 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

Graham: thanks.

Arthur: I did think about the f/4 IS, but I'd seen such good results with the f/2.8 that I thought I'd go with that one instead. Also, I do like shooting at around f/5.6 to f/8.0 but I suspect that the extra stop will come in handy at some point.

comment by Arthur at 01:08 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

I suspect that the extra stop will come in handy at some point.

Yes, almost certainly.

Having recently splashed out on the 85mm f1.8 (which is really beautiful, and <honest>necessary for a particular job </honest>), my wallet is firmly closed to more lenses.

Definitely.

Probably...

:-)

Beautiful contract, and color!

Very nice colors! Love it...

nice rich colors. your kids have cool names.

comment by navin harish at 05:02 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

Lovely shot. Very nice location and composition. I really like the colours in this image which is a little rare on your site as you tend to post pictures with muted colours or post process them to mute colours. I love the sweaters of the girls. These kind of sweaters were really popular here when I was a kid but I don't see them anymore.

Great family shot! too bad you weren't in it too

comment by doreen at 05:44 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

love the colourful outfits =D

comment by Thomas Solberg / Project neXus at 07:14 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

Great capture. The green settings and the vivid colours of the clothes really go hand in hand, literary! :-)

comment by Ries at 08:09 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

This is a really lovely family shot. The colourful clothes are very nice in this landscape.
Like the names also ;-)

comment by Mark at 08:17 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

For me this image exudes very warm feelings. I believe that sometimes we get too close to our images and miss so much of the value of the story.

comment by tony budge at 08:55 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

The colours in this are fantastic

comment by tobias at 09:15 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

I take it you agree with the point made?

comment by thomas at 09:27 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

wonderful image, but i don't like the extrem saturation of the colours.

comment by Friederike at 11:07 AM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

Very sweet picture!

comment by aaron at 07:42 PM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

looks like the softest grass...makes me want to take off my shoes and join them.

comment by djn1 at 08:34 PM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

Thanks everyone.

tobias/mooch: no, I don't agree. No disrespect, but had I wanted to produce a more naturalistic (flat/desaturated/whatever) version I would have done so.

comment by casey at 09:10 PM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

This is more cute than I can handle.

comment by marcello at 11:42 PM (GMT) on 3 November, 2006

that's that color of a happy family. saturated with happiness. Great.

comment by mooch at 11:05 AM (GMT) on 4 November, 2006

Horses for courses I suppose.

comment by Simon C at 05:01 PM (GMT) on 4 November, 2006

Fine perspective, and that saturation certainly pops. Someone in the family does some serious knitting!

comment by Chris at 05:20 PM (GMT) on 4 November, 2006

Ah, but the poetry that is your admission ("a sow's ear into a silk purse") may be worth the time itself! ;)

comment by joghem at 11:39 AM (GMT) on 5 November, 2006

Beautiful colours and landscape! Love it.

comment by SysAgent at 05:34 PM (GMT) on 5 November, 2006

Oh my word Dave this shot has the green stuff in it!

;-)

Lovely location (where was it) and fantastic DOF that fits the main focus of the walkers just right.

comment by Jim at 07:51 PM (GMT) on 5 November, 2006

A lovely photo - sorry for the mundane question, but can I ask where the 2 colourful coats were from, as I can imagine our daughters being very much into them...

comment by Jeet at 02:29 PM (GMT) on 6 November, 2006

Wow.. I like the vivid colors in this one !
