I was browsing through some old RAW files today and thought I'd have another go at processing one of the shots I took of this kite. Regular visitors will remember the original SG-Blackpool – I certainly do, it's my second most commented entry – and this version isn't entirely dissimilar. The processing was different (and technically better), and I've gone for a different set of colours this time round, but it's not a million miles away from the first one. On the whole, I prefer the previous version, but I am pleased with this one too.

On which note, I'm taking a couple of days off.

As most of you will have realised I've been scrabbling around for things to post over the last week or so and don't really think I'm doing myself justice by sticking to the image a day thing. We have a lot going on at the moment, all of which I'll explain at some point, but I've now got to the stage where there really aren't enough hours in the day and something's got to give. So, regrettably, I'm going to take a few days off from the blog to gather my wits, sort out some stuff at work, get the boiler fixed – we've had no hot water for two days – and generally chill out. At the absolute latest, I'll be back this time next week; but I suspect it will be sooner.

Update: It's been a couple of days since I posted anything so thanks for all your comments on this shot. All being well I'll be back in a couple of days.

Hope you get your boiler fixed! :P

I like both versions, but for different reasons. The colors really pop in this version.

Have a nice break - hope you get things sorted out. Look forward to updates.

Have a good break... sounds like you need and deserve it! :-)

comment by RDB at 12:19 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

David,

When I saw this my first reaction was WOW! What a great picture and very well processed. Thank you. Enjoy your break.

comment by Susie at 12:32 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Very cool image. As far as the 'daily' photo, I have been amazed at how literal you are that the daily photo is just that! Even on the weekend! I think we would all forgive you if you weren't able to find an image to put up absolutely every day, or if you were to take weekends off, or... In the meantime, until you have yourself sorted, enjoy your break.

comment by laanba at 12:35 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Susie took the words right out of my mouth. I have also been amazed that you have kept up the daily in photoblogging with the high quality that you have. I don't think it hurts to take a few days off here and there. No explanations necessary and we'll see you on the other side of your break. That's the beauty of RSS!

comment by Jezblog at 01:21 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Dude......you have really earned it....... kick back and relax......that level of consistency.... for that long....... Im amazed you hav'nt required numerous breaks already......I go through phases of a picture a day.....but....Ive never managed longer than a few weeks without the odd day off-!! Get your stuff done....... chill......when you come back make sure you are having fun doing it ........ have a nice break! PS Great shot great treatment.......
Cheers Jez XX

Hi David, i'm a regular visitor, i've commented only a few times, but i come here everyday to see your photos. You inspired me in many ways to photography, and i even bought a new camera (400D) to dedicate myself to it.

I have a question... I've been shooting around these days, and the weather is almost like this in your photo lately... So I set the camera for an aperture f/4 with iso 200 and the maximum speed I can manage to get is 1/100, but mostly less... How do you manage these aperture, iso and speed to work?? I haven't really tried RAW files yet, i guess they really make a difference.( I tried it fast cuz I didn't have much time... ) I've also noticed that the polarizer filter I was using takes almost 4 stops of light, so I took it off, it got better but not perfect as I wanted. I'm hoping for a sunny day.

Sorry for writing this huge comment and asking a lot of questions when you're so busy. Take your time, ok =)

comment by navin harish at 03:06 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

I like the previos version better as that has more vibrant colours. Another problem I see with this picture is that the clouds visible through the centre of the kite look smudged.

comment by Yvonne at 03:53 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

I Iove the colors in this version. Hope all is well with you and also your boiler. Take the time to recharge. Best of luck with everything.

comment by micki at 04:08 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

I love this kaleidoscope of colors! Beautifully processed.

Good luck getting things all sorted out, at least enough to feel you've got your head above the waves. Life is great, isn't it? Busy, but great!

comment by Ali at 04:45 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

good luck and have fun man! it's good to take some days off. i wish everything to be fine.

comment by Lynn at 06:39 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Out of interest, what's the image with the most comments?

You deserve the time off, hope things get fixed.

comment by P.J. at 07:20 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Awesome shot and processing! The colors are beautiful!

comment by Ries at 08:01 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Well... this is also really nice! Love the colours. Enjoy your break.

comment by Patrick at 08:03 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Hi David,
Thanks for this superb processing. I also liked the previous one better, but the tone given to that one is very interesting. I would really be interested in knowing more about how you processed this one. Are you using Camera Raw? If yes, I see how you can play around with the temperature, tones, saturation and so on, but how did you manage to desaturate the sky completely while keeping the color information on the kite?? I guess you'd have to do that in Photoshop after the shot has been converted to JPEG, am I right? Or if you can do that in a RAW processing software, I'd be interested in knowing which one.
Thanks a lot for the great work and come back soon.

comment by Craig Judd at 08:34 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Dave
I said it to your on the phone the other day, mate your a superman, 5 kids, a fulltime job, photography, a daily blog, a sideline business, and jeez knows how you turn out the quality consistently. Seriously take some time out. You already know that those who are faithful to chromasia and see it as inspiration for themselves will be back as soon as you are.....

Oh nice picture by the way...... a classic to end on. Go relax, get the boiler fixed!!!!
Theres a long winter ahead....Regards

comment by Jennifer at 08:35 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Both are great, this perhaps the more interesting. Revisiting RAWs is good - I've just had a go at some portraits, taken a few months ago, using Lightroom this time - the difference is amazing. Look forward to seeing you back here soon refreshed and warm!!

comment by Phil at 08:40 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

It's really nice, but I prefer the first one... Here, I have some difficulties to breathe...

comment by peter at 08:51 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

funny - I almost suggested that you take a couple of days off as you seemed to be struggling a bit the last few days, sSo it's good to hear that you are pulling out the plug for a while. As for this picture - I like the first one better, but no matter how you process the original file it will always be a strong, eye-catching image.

comment by mooch at 10:05 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Well, this was a winner before and it certainly floats my boat the second time around. The colours are just so vivid against that desaturation! I like the way the light seems to emanate from right behund the panels. Should top out the most commented if it is to stay online for a few days.

Hope all gets sorted and that you'll return inspired. I feel guitly about my critical comments of late but well, I do like this sort of shot alot more...

comment by Andrew at 10:10 AM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Dave - I have been a regular visitor for the last 15 months or so and I am constantly impressed by the qualify of your images. More recently though I think, dare I say it, that one or two have become a little repetative or less impressive. I remember the original one, which was amazing. How you find the time and motiviation to create these images on a daily basis is beyond me and the vast majority of your posts are truely fantasic (untitled #0037 is my favourite more recently).

I reckon there is a trade-off between creating truely fantastic images and posting daily and I believe that this may have caught up on you, especially given your other commitments and ventures. (I don't know whether there is any substance to this, but have the average number of comments or visits per image reduced more recently which I suppose will tell you something.)

I'm hesitiating to click "post" - who am I to comment - you are certainly in a league well and truely above me. I have followed your work since you were mentioned on the BBC website and I have taken a lot of inspiration from your work, for which I am grateful.

The short break will do you good and I'm already looking forward to the next post (and the tutorials).

Andrew

Overall I'd probably give the edge to the 1st SG Blackpool, but I love the cloud structure in this one. A top image to end the slum shots :-)

The first one is one of my favorites and I'm afraid to say this isn't a path on the first one.
I hope your creative juices start to flow again soon. A rest is always good.

would be interesting to see the originial one also..

Every bit as good as the first SG-Blackpool IMO. Love it.

Hi Dave,
They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, I'm missing your daily postings already.
Have a good break, well deserved.

comment by Beth at 01:20 PM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

I like the first one, this one seems a bit flat.

comment by David at 01:36 PM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Hi Dave,

Lovely image. Enjoy the break, sometimes its best to put down the camera for a few days, and just enjoy looking at the world without trying to capture it. I know when i do it I always come back with renewed vigor and enjoy my photography more.

Take care

comment by Ronnie at 01:45 PM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Extraordinary image Dave!
I like the original very much also.
This one is different not only in the processing, but also in the compo..
Looks like the two figures on the seashore are holding the ropes!
Enjoy you time off...
Get the Batteries charged again...

We'll see you again in due time.
Cheers!

comment by martin at 02:10 PM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Stunning. Although I've tried, I can never replicate this level of colour detail.

comment by mooch at 04:57 PM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

I think you've found the measure of your audience. Commetns have gone up two-fold on this image. I was just in the minority of those articulating their feelings.

comment by Rick Burns at 05:15 PM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

See you when you get back. Rick

comment by Phill at 07:54 PM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

Great image. I prefer this version. The processing is fantastic, not certain I would be wanting to hold onto the other end of that beast though.

comment by CurlyToes at 08:08 PM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

I reckon it's just as nice as the other one. Super... I tend to only post photos when I have something to post these days - the one a day thing can get tedious, especially when you're scraping the barrel.

comment by flying cow at 10:29 PM (GMT) on 15 November, 2006

oooh i remember this kite. the previous one is my most favourite image to date. it was also the first time i figured out what a fantastic tool photoshop was.
i would love to see the kite in its original form. the second picture is pretty nice but the older one, is definitely the more vibrant and richer and the better one.

see you soon!

Dave,

I love this image. I will always check in on Chromasia, regardless of image posting pace. May your break be a "break."

My Wyre wreck print purchase has finally come back from my local frame shop and has made its way to a suitable place on the wall and the house is so much better off for it. All the best.

comment by Andrew at 04:30 AM (GMT) on 16 November, 2006

wow great colors. I really like how you selectively desaturated.

comment by geckonia at 04:33 AM (GMT) on 16 November, 2006

Knowing you're going to post something, even from the archives, every day gets me off my butt and out the door to go take pictures. So, I hope you keep posting just because doing so provides inspiration to slugs like me. :-) This is one of my faves. Reminds me of a jelly fish.

comment by doreen at 06:49 AM (GMT) on 16 November, 2006

i still don't understand how this can be just a kite. in both pictures, it looks HUGE. plus, how is it being held down? is someone holding onto it? is it anchored somwhere? it kind of bothers me that you can't see where it's coming from (but in a good way =P)

Every superman needs a retreat to recharge. Yours is overdue--enjoy! Wonderful picture in classic Chromasia style. I prefer the first only because it was my introduction to your website and I was blown away by the size, color and crispness of that image. This kite looks like it could carry a small village away!

comment by bryan at 01:15 PM (GMT) on 16 November, 2006

Obviously a very popular image. It's amazing how well lit the kite is against the dark sky. The framing is also extraordinary.

comment by Stuart at 04:46 PM (GMT) on 17 November, 2006

I remember the original SG-Blackpool shot, and it still ranks among my favourite photoblog shots of all time. I think this shot is very good, but having seen the first one, it's not in the same league. The original shot has almost nothing in it to give a sense of scale, so we're left to ponder just how big that kite really is! In this one, the people give some scale, so the mystery is gone. I also think the original is better timing, because the lower edge of the kite is touching the sand.

Enjoy the break, and I hope the boiler repair isn't too expensive!
