This one's for Libby too.

Like yesterday's, this is a shot of a rose, and there's nothing especially clever about how it was done. The roses were in a vase on our coffee table, lit by an overhead light (hence the long exposures), and the camera was on a tripod, two legs on the floor, one on the table. As for post-processing: this one has had it's hue shifted a little (the original was somewhat more orange) and both this one and yesterday's have been selectively blurred. Other than that I didn't do too much else other than adjust the contrast with a Curve or two.

Oh, and I don't know about you, but I think I prefer this one to yesterday's. Let me know what you think.

brilliant, a real 'Labarynth' feel to it.

comment by kurt at 08:32 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

beautifully soft - and great colors.

comment by CurlyToes at 08:57 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

Great colour on it. It almost looks like a computer generated art, it's so geometric; very nice.

comment by Martin at 09:18 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

I love the depth, but I prefer orange.

comment by /\/\J at 09:29 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

this is also really cool but im a bigger fan of yesterdays post. this looks more unnatural

comment by Mal at 09:42 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

Only just but I would go for this one to, both absolutely beautiful.

I hope you bought the flowers Dave and poor Libby did not buy them for herself? ;-) Mal

This one. By a mile.

comment by Robin Jones at 09:57 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

I prefer this one. Without the picture yesterday i wonder if i would have thought this was a rose? It is the abstract spiral triangles, receding into the centre, that catch the eye.

comment by Sharla at 10:06 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

This is so good, so c h r o m a s i a, so you. I like it much, much better than yesterday's. Its form is so different, triangles instead of circles. I saw this one first and didn't expect a rose. It suggested rose but with the blur and focus, I couldn't know for sure. There is the suggestion of someone looking, a peeking quality, that really makes the shot. The pink animates it even more. And the 1x1 framing is the perfect choice, giving balance to everying vantage.

comment by John Washington at 10:15 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

Like Sharla above it looks like an eye peeping and it is even more accentuated after 4 pints of Stella Artois.

The contrast is better on this for me Dave. It draws you into the centre and that spooky eye.

Simple photuo that works well in my opinion

Yup...this is alot better for me.

Thanks for answering my question yesterday. I wasn't too sure if it was just a trick or a real flower. Nice work.

comment by Ries at 11:05 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

awesome rose. really like the beautiful soft tones.

comment by Robert at 11:11 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

I like the red from yesterday better, but the geometry and lighting of this image.

comment by Jelb at 11:36 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

Bonjour,
Both are very-well done! This one seems better for me! Always, great shots on your blog! Bravo! ( sorry for incorrect English !... French!)

comment by dalton at 11:46 PM (GMT) on 26 November, 2006

I think this one is a bit better than yesterday. So hard to believe that it's lit just from an overhead light!

I would love to hear more about this "selective blurring" technique. Anyone talking about it on the forums?

comment by Alice at 12:29 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

Wow! This is beautiful! Great perspective and I really like the selective focus. I agree...I like yesterday's post as well, but of the two, this one is my favorite. Great job!

Just an excellent shot.

Yes, I love this one...purple! I love purple...and you can get a sense of depth, surprisingly. I do like it.

comment by Lynn at 05:17 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

Personally I prefer yesterday's; the colour seems a bit overdone on this one (it makes me think of skin tissue more than a rose). That said, I do love the 'tunnel' effect the gradual blurring gives.

comment by doreen at 05:21 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

i would like today's shot better if it wasn't for the blinding purple colour lol

comment by P.J. at 06:45 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

I liked yesterdays and like this one just as much. Awesome shot!

comment by Jennifer at 08:34 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

I see pink, not purple (may be cerise, is yr picky) is my monitor off?! I like this best - make a great canvas.

comment by elissa at 08:35 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

I prefer the spiraling and color of yesterday's shot more. :o)

comment by {-P-} at 08:40 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

It's funny, I do the same thing when I ofer flower to my wife ! But unfortunately I don't make so beautiful shot as you. Anyway, maybe when I will be older :-)

comment by mooch at 08:56 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

This has a more abstract softer 'fall into the image' feel to it. I like the tone. Just a gently enveloping image.

comment by Roy at 09:29 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

Both are exquisite; each colour evokes a different feeling - colour therapy in action!

comment by Jamey at 11:24 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

Yep, prefer this to yesterday's. Note to self - buy Lab colour book.

comment by Craig Wilson at 11:33 AM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

Excellent, love the abstract swirls.

comment by mark schacter at 04:41 PM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

you do lovely work.

comment by Annika at 07:14 PM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

The shape of today and the colour of yesterday. This one is too agressiv for me.

A soft welvet-pink would have been even better.

comment by whitecordoba at 07:30 PM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

These look great, however I'm not sure how you lit it. Did your camera not block the overhead light?

comment by m at 10:04 PM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

Like it, but prefer yesterdays

comment by djn1 at 10:58 PM (GMT) on 27 November, 2006

Thanks everyone :-)

comment by kevin at 05:19 PM (GMT) on 28 November, 2006

I like both shots - i like the tones featured in both of them
In this shot, I find myself looking into the center and seeing an eye staring back at me. Really cool effect. Great job with the selective blurring.
