Wow. That’s a striking shot!
Nice selective blur. I know what you mean about the catchlights, but they work quite nicely with the huge pupils.

I’m assuming you overlaid a masked gaussian blur...?

Very nice. I find it funny that my wife and I both refer to your daughter's image by her name before even reading the comments! It has been a pleasure to to watch them grow up through your creative eye! I looked back the other day and was particularly intrigued by the images 'don't look up' #s 1 & 2 and then this is posted. Its sort of a 'where is she now' moment. Great image!

long time since i didt comment....this is a lovely portrait, love the angle and the process of photo...she's very serious but misterious.

Normally I love your work, but I think this portrait is unintentionally creepy -- I find the little girls' face put into this smoldering femme fatale pose (and lighting) a bit disturbing.
comment byDoug at 09:11 AM (GMT) on 11 December, 2006
Gawgeous!
She slightly reminds me of Britney Spears in this shot
and for some reason i think the thumbnail shot at the top of this page looks more pleasing

This is the best portrait I've seen in the collection of your children. The adult expression is what is so striking about the image. I especially like the contrasts of expressions that are the opposite of the owner's age.
comment by Henrietta at 09:44 AM (GMT) on 11 December, 2006
Gosh - isn't she growing up fast! I always find it amazing how much older our little ones can look in portraits. Mine is nearly 3, but can look 5,6,7 ... !
A lovely picture - she must be pleased with it too.

the 1.4 looks brilliant david, can I ask you how you used your flash on this one? what did you bounce off/diffuse through?
Stunning. I love it.

It's so odd that she looks so.. old and wise in her eyes.
Beautiful picture, as always.

I don't get it. Why expose for 1/6 sec when you are using a flash gun that gives off all the light you need in about 1/700th? Why not use F1.4 and, say, 1/125th when using th flash to eliminate any camera shake and still receive the same amount of light.

Thanks all.
Arthur: yes, a very mild one.
Dave: yep, she's growing up at an incredibly fast rate ... at least it seems that way.
Peter: there is something just a little bit creepy about Rhowan, and I don't mean that in a horrible way. It's just that there's quite often something almost unearthly about her.
yogi: Rhowan was very pleased with your comment :-)
Anne: yes and no, but mostly no ;-)
Simon: because I quite like the slight diffusion you can get when shooting at slow shutter speeds with a flash. It doesn't always work, but in this case I think it paid off.

Jeez, what shot! just incredible given the age of the model. Such a professional pose. I guess by now she must have a fair for it. Watch out Kate Moss... etc.. Your handy work ain't so bad either DJN!
This is Rhowan, and other than the fairly messy catchlights, I'm quite pleased with this one.
