This, in case you were wondering, is a control dial on this abandoned wreck. And I guess that's all I've got to say about this one other than that I suspect I should have used a higher ISO and/or smaller aperture as the original is a bit soft. That said, I'm not sure it would have worked as well had in been sharper. Perhaps I'll shoot it again another day.

Anyway, irrespective of the merits of this one, it's the first one I've put up taken with my new 5D (which arrived a couple of days ago). So far, I'm pretty impressed, but I won't bore you with the details unless you're interested. Let me know.

Interested......... of course we are !! Looks like a watercolour rather than a photo though, but maybe that's the effect you were after?!

Cool image - I didn't have a clue what it was until I read your comments. Enjoy your new 5D! I actually like the softness - adds to the mystique a bit.

Yeah, I wondered how long it would take for you to upgrade the 20D to a 5D or 1D. Do you reckon that you'll change your 'standard' zoom (the 17-40) for a 24-70 or similar now that you don't have the x1.6 crop factor?

comment by Ben at 08:53 PM (GMT) on 17 January, 2007

Congrats on the new 5D! I can't wait to see some really wide shots with that 17-40 of yours on the 1.0x crop factor of the 5D. I'd be interested in hearing some of the details about your new camera, as well as the answer to Simon's question.

Welcome to the world of more lovely shots from Chromasia. Congrats on youe 5D. I'll be very interested to see what new creations come out from you.

I've got one and I love it.

Excellent. Now when you post great photographs I can just put it down to the fact that you're using a 5D. Cheers ;)

A kaleidoscope of colours - good stuff!

5D?! Nice. You were one of the reasons I chose the 20D. Can I ask what made you choose the 5D? Was it for full frame, 10 megapixels, or what? I'm torn about buying one as they're not cheap, and I know Canon will come out with a better camera the day I buy one. ;-)

I'd be interested to hear over the course of time how you like it and especially what you DON'T like about it relative to your 20D.

Want to sell your 20D David ? .... to inspire a ''oldie''

comment by Ben Dylan at 10:24 PM (GMT) on 17 January, 2007

Bother, I keep wanting to get a 5d, you're not helping me resist temptation!

Really like this photo, the tones make it look quite human.

Definitely has the washed-color feel of a watercolor.

comment by MarkDM at 05:07 AM (GMT) on 18 January, 2007

Beautiful, painterly image, and nice eye. Most people wouldn't even have noticed that dial.

omg.
very good colors and textures!!!

comment by geckonia at 05:32 AM (GMT) on 18 January, 2007

Cool colors, even if the focus is off. I think you're going to fall in love with your 17-40L all over again. It's a great lens on the 5D. Don't hesitate to crank that ISO up next time! The 5D can take it. ;-)

I really like the colors you've captured here. Nice job!

Very intriguing image - my first thought was 'a robot's navel'. Well spotted :-)

comment by Kennedy at 10:45 AM (GMT) on 18 January, 2007

Hell yeah, let us know about the 5D! :D

I'm liking this picture as well, good work :).

Your blog is really splendid. I discover it today. With this very beautiful photograph. It is almost a watercolour. Cheers.

comment by Alice at 01:42 PM (GMT) on 18 January, 2007

Great shot! I love the various colors and details. Nice job!

comment by John at 02:42 PM (GMT) on 18 January, 2007

It is a little soft, but that gives it a nice "painterly" feel to it. Enjoy your new "toy."

comment by Nicolas at 04:38 PM (GMT) on 18 January, 2007

It seems the metal is fluid... More thanb only a simple photo ! Huge !

comment by djn1 at 08:26 PM (GMT) on 18 January, 2007

Thanks all.

Jennifer: see tomorrow's entry.

Simon: I won't be getting rid of the 17-40 - I love that lens - but I may well get the 24-70 as well.

Jamey: :-)

Max: there were various reasons I got the 5D. First, as we're now running chromasia full-time I needed to get a second body anyway. Second, I did want a full-frame sensor. And third, a few more megapixels won't do any harm. I did think about holding out for a 1Ds mkII, but they're far too expensive at the moment.

Richard: I wish I could, but at the moment I need a second body.

geckonia: thanks, I'll try not to be quite so conservative with my ISO setting in future.

comment by Mark at 09:05 PM (GMT) on 18 January, 2007

great shot and welcome to the 5D club! :) that 17-40 will become a whole new lens now. Btw, how far cropped in are you on this shot??

comment by Roded at 10:01 PM (GMT) on 18 January, 2007

Wow impressive colors here.

comment by Santhosh at 07:11 AM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

hi, you were right.. I could not make anything out of the shot when I saw the first time but could join the dots after reading your note :)

Not up to the others I commented on today

comment by joe at 06:37 AM (GMT) on 30 January, 2007

I really like this. I don't think "sunny" is the right word, but it definitiely has a whimsical lightness that not all of your pics do. At the same time, the light colors kind of belie the decay beneath. V. Nice!
