This is the first of three shots taken down at Blackpool seafront this lunchtime, and as you can see it was all rather dramatic. That said, it wasn't an especially high tide today, but the very strong onshore wind caused quite a bit of flooding along the front and a very rough sea.

This one was taken from the entrance of one of the tram shelters and required quite accurate timing; not for the photograph, but to ensure that I didn't get completely soaked as the water crashed back down.

Beautiful, Love the shapes in the foreground water and the fact you can see the body of water behind the froth in shadows, adds real depth. Guess you where worried about soaking the new 5D! Like the cool grade too..

Great action shot and beautiful tones (as always)

Reminds me of another one of yours:

Though there's a lot more power behind the wave on this one...

comment by djn1 at 10:07 PM (GMT) on 20 January, 2007

hixter: yep, I was a bit worried about it, but I managed to keep it fairly dry :-)

rj: thanks.

Jim: yep, they're fairly similar though I did try and tone this one differently (but ended up coming back to pretty much the same technique I used on the last one). The waves today though were considerably more impressive than last time.

Oh, lovley!

comment by Paul at 10:33 PM (GMT) on 20 January, 2007

Spectacular image, how I wished for storms here in Edinburgh so I could get down to the sea for some of the same!

comment by Parker at 10:45 PM (GMT) on 20 January, 2007

That's beautiful! Nice work on this one sir, it's most impressive.

comment by Markus at 11:40 PM (GMT) on 20 January, 2007

Fantastic, makes me wish I lived near the sea, nicely caught!

Very nice action shot, the power of the sea...

Great shot David. I have not been too much for the beach shots the last few days but I love this one. Tons of energy.

comment by Amy at 12:36 AM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

WOW! This is amazing! good job saving your camera from utter wetness. :D I love how you've captured the volume and frozen the movement (though it still feels like it's coming at ya!)
Good job!!

Thank you so much for sharing this brilliant picture. As an extremely novice photographer I love your website. I'm looking forward to the others you'll be sharing from the same day.

Love the frozen water! Makes me fear for your life... kinda. :p

comment by Santhosh at 07:08 AM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

hi, this is beautiful timed shot. Eventhough you were timing not to get wet but looks you got lucky to capture this.

Full of motion.

comment by Kennedy at 07:26 AM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

*Very* nice =D. I love the depth and contrast. The foreground water splashing down is great as well =). Are you planning on uploading the other ones? It would be great to see them. :).

Great job.

Amazing - perhaps should have gone for the 1Ds II with weather sealing if yr gonna play in these conditions! ;-)

comment by Hennie at 10:02 AM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

No sage comments from me - just "Wow". It's the kind of picture that jumps out to hit you!

comment by Richard Trim at 10:31 AM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

Apart from thoroughly appreciating about 99% of your photo's. I find that you even have to the abilty to respectivally challenge the power of 'big seas '. It must have caused the adrenalin to flow not only with the visual and audible power of such waves in close proximity but also with the challenge of getting such pictures. Does your insurance cover such contingencies.
The shot itself, reminded me instantly of the delights of Jackson Pollock's huge works.
The simililarity is not subtle.
... and yes you can have a ''Wow'' as well. Wish I'd been there.

comment by Boje at 12:51 PM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

Wow from me too. A great use of the photographic frame, I think; the way the exploding water is constrained by it really emphasizes its power and incontestability. Cool colours and all.

comment by Beau at 02:41 PM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

Excellent photograph. You've really captured the power of water with this one. I like it a lot.

comment by David Chabashvili at 04:01 PM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

comment by m at 04:56 PM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

I wondered if you would have any shots of the windy days. There were lots in the press of Blackpool.

comment by Azz at 05:01 PM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

Wow!

comment by Marius M at 05:17 PM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

Finally something outstanding!
Great capture of "power in action".
Like the green toning.
Your post processing is superb.

comment by Psychodudu at 05:31 PM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

Quick! Leg it! I really get that "the walls are closing in on me" feeling from this shot. It makes me want to turn and run, throwing the elderly, women, children and dogs behind me as I go.....ahem...ok, maybe not dogs then. Cracking shot Mr. Dave. "Finally something outstanding."....that made me laugh a bit.

comment by mooch at 06:56 PM (GMT) on 21 January, 2007

Awww, now I love this. It is amazing! Look at the force in that! Great tones and sencse of sheer scale Dave. Amazing...

Thanks everyone :-)

comment by Kiliii Yu at 07:25 AM (GMT) on 22 January, 2007

Now _that's_ where I wanna be. There's some power in that moment. Nice capture David. Have you ever taken a boat out in this type of weather and felt it full on? It's one of my most and least favorite things to do.

comment by lisa Wilkinson at 09:56 AM (GMT) on 22 January, 2007

god this looks so scarey, great action shot!

comment by Regis at 10:36 AM (GMT) on 22 January, 2007

Stunning shot !

comment by Mark Palmer at 04:54 PM (GMT) on 22 January, 2007

It wasn't half scary on that promenade yesterday... I managed to get a couple of shots of crashing waves from the bridge over the prom between Central & North pier but it was no mean feat...

comment by Chiara at 10:49 PM (GMT) on 22 January, 2007

Amazing

Really good shot, I can't do photo like this, because it's dangerous... IMHO...
