It's been a while since I ventured down to St. Annes to shoot the pier so ventured down this morning, and this is the first of three shots I'll be putting up from the trip.
My intention was to shoot some HDR shots, but when I tried to process them with Photomatix Pro I wasn't especially happy with any of them. So, instead, all three of this small set are produced by overlaying and masking a set of originals shot at varying exposures. This one is made up of four originals, tomorrow's two, and the final one, which I'll put up on Friday, is constructed from three originals.
Oh, and given that these are produced from multiple shots I won't be putting up the EXIF data. Suffice to say that I bracketed widely (from around 1/20 to 1/4000) and this one and Friday's at f/16.0 and tomorrow's at f/8.0.
On a totally different topic, and if you're based in the UK: I need your help. I've been approached about a commission, which on the face of it sounds quite simple – I need one shot of a beach with smooth pebbles that are reasonably large. And that's it; pebbles in the foreground, stretching out towards the sea and the horizon, and nothing else.
'What complicates things though is that the shot has to be perfect, it has to be the ultimate pebble/beach shot. And that would be ok if we had the 'ultimate pebble beach' at either Blackpool, St. Anne's, or Fleetwood, ... but we don't. So, if any of you could recommend a beach, preferably in the North West of England, though anywhere in the UK would do, I'd be extremely grateful. Oh, and if you happen to have a shot of the pebbles/beach you're recommending I'd be even more grateful.

Very nice... There's something sci-fi about this shot, looks like another world. As for pebble beaches; I can't help you in the north, but Brighton, Bournemouth, Worthing beaches are all large round pebbles... if you're up for a bit of traveling that is. Not sure if this because of favorable childhood memories of the place but I have it in my head that Winchelsea beach (East Sussex) would be the 'ultimate big pebble beach' (http://images.google.com/images?q=Winchelsea+beach). Don't forget to drop by if you come down this way ;-)

We have some beaches with pebbles here in Portugal, but it's too far for you. It's a tough challenge to find such a beach with that characteristics there, but you'll see you'll find one.
A long way to trek, but a lovely part of the world.

It's a long way away - but we went on holiday once to the West Coast of Ireland, and stayed at Cromane, and the beach there had the most wonderful big pebbles, with mountains and sea stretching out beyond. I took a couple of photos... It was lovely there, but it's a long way from Fleetwood / Blackpool.
A bit nearer home - there are lots of sandy beaches in North Wales - the only one I can remember visiting with pebbles was Criccieth beach which had a bit of a mix of pebbles and sand...

Amazing shot. Two points:
1) it has been quite a long time since you provided substantial info about the post-processing of a shot. This may be beacuse you're ramping up for the tutorials.
2) this makes me eager to see the tutorials. I hope there is at least one on HDR both via Photomatix as well as the method here.
I like the low angle in this shot and the tones in the sky really goes well against the foregrounds darker and grey colors

Brilliant shot...I can agree that Photomatix would not do that job here...lateley I also tend to use masking in PS instead of Photomatix.
Love the way the sun came out, and clouds together with airplain tracks give a great depth effect. Some more exposire on the row of logs(?) going alongside the path would be good for me to show the details there, but nevertheless great shot.

As for the "ultimate" pebble beach I suppose that all depends on your definition and what kind of picture you're looking to create. Felixstowe might be worth looking at as it has a pebble beach that slopes away towards the sea.
