It's been a while since I ventured down to St. Annes to shoot the pier so ventured down this morning, and this is the first of three shots I'll be putting up from the trip.

My intention was to shoot some HDR shots, but when I tried to process them with Photomatix Pro I wasn't especially happy with any of them. So, instead, all three of this small set are produced by overlaying and masking a set of originals shot at varying exposures. This one is made up of four originals, tomorrow's two, and the final one, which I'll put up on Friday, is constructed from three originals.

Oh, and given that these are produced from multiple shots I won't be putting up the EXIF data. Suffice to say that I bracketed widely (from around 1/20 to 1/4000) and this one and Friday's at f/16.0 and tomorrow's at f/8.0.

On a totally different topic, and if you're based in the UK: I need your help. I've been approached about a commission, which on the face of it sounds quite simple – I need one shot of a beach with smooth pebbles that are reasonably large. And that's it; pebbles in the foreground, stretching out towards the sea and the horizon, and nothing else.

'What complicates things though is that the shot has to be perfect, it has to be the ultimate pebble/beach shot. And that would be ok if we had the 'ultimate pebble beach' at either Blackpool, St. Anne's, or Fleetwood, ... but we don't. So, if any of you could recommend a beach, preferably in the North West of England, though anywhere in the UK would do, I'd be extremely grateful. Oh, and if you happen to have a shot of the pebbles/beach you're recommending I'd be even more grateful.

Do they need Aliens as well? That's quite a shopping list! Can't help you with that quest Dave, sorry.

I can comment on a great image that you have already taken though! Mal

Very nice... There's something sci-fi about this shot, looks like another world. As for pebble beaches; I can't help you in the north, but Brighton, Bournemouth, Worthing beaches are all large round pebbles... if you're up for a bit of traveling that is. Not sure if this because of favorable childhood memories of the place but I have it in my head that Winchelsea beach (East Sussex) would be the 'ultimate big pebble beach' (http://images.google.com/images?q=Winchelsea+beach). Don't forget to drop by if you come down this way ;-)

We have some beaches with pebbles here in Portugal, but it's too far for you. It's a tough challenge to find such a beach with that characteristics there, but you'll see you'll find one.

Oh, and fantastic image! ;-)

Sidmouth sea front in Devon, pebbles as far as the eye can see

A long way to trek, but a lovely part of the world.

Criccieth, North Wales - and there is fab ice cream at Cadwalladers - your kids would love it and there's a castle for good measure! Great shot btw.

........and David Branscombe bay and the beached ''dirty british coaster'' are not far away .. so kill two birds with one visit !
...and the coast along there is a world heritage site ... the geology and geomorphology is just so fascinating .. ...it's yummy ...
Go for it ... take Libby and the kids down there for half term .

Searching for 'ultimate big pebble beach' on Flickr produced no results, unsurprisingly. After a quick search, Wales seemed to produce some interesting results and is not too far from Blackpool.

Great shot, Dave!

This looks stunning, especially with the way you've retained the details through the entire frame.

It's a long way away - but we went on holiday once to the West Coast of Ireland, and stayed at Cromane, and the beach there had the most wonderful big pebbles, with mountains and sea stretching out beyond. I took a couple of photos... It was lovely there, but it's a long way from Fleetwood / Blackpool.

A bit nearer home - there are lots of sandy beaches in North Wales - the only one I can remember visiting with pebbles was Criccieth beach which had a bit of a mix of pebbles and sand...

glorious composition. before reading the info, i didn't realise it was an HDR. I'm glad you made it look quite real and not very George Lucas. :D

Phot of the day for me! just amazing...compostion light and processing lovely

comment by Mike at 11:03 PM (GMT) on 24 January, 2007

Dave this windsurfing site has reviews of over 230 beaches and will often say if they have pebbles. Unfortunately, it looks like you will be going to Wales or the south coast for the best pebble beaches. Oh, and great shot - I even like the contrails on this one.

comment by Ryano at 11:06 PM (GMT) on 24 January, 2007

Wow! why can't my pics turn out like this Dave. Your photos honestly brighten up my day. Beautiful!

Brillant image from the amazing lighting to the dramatic sky. Well Done...

awesome shot.
Im loving the sky.

comment by Edward at 04:46 AM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

Amazing shot. Two points:
1) it has been quite a long time since you provided substantial info about the post-processing of a shot. This may be beacuse you're ramping up for the tutorials.
2) this makes me eager to see the tutorials. I hope there is at least one on HDR both via Photomatix as well as the method here.

comment by Thomas Solberg / Project neXus at 06:49 AM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

I like the low angle in this shot and the tones in the sky really goes well against the foregrounds darker and grey colors

A typical Chromasia shot, that´s why I hang around here.
I really like these blue sky photos you have :)

comment by Jennifer at 10:05 AM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

The beach just below Porth Y Nant (where the Welsh Language Centre is) on the Lleyn penninsula might be worth checking out - not been there for years but I vaguely remember very uncomfortable picnics!

comment by riesenriel at 11:09 AM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

Breath taking... really! The lighting, shadow, perspective.... just great ;-)

You are the best. Allways the same place but everytimes different pictures. I have much to learn from you. Félicitations,

comment by Marius M at 11:36 AM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

Great post processing. As usual.
I wonder, how long time it took you to process this pucture? Thanks.

comment by David Chabashvili at 11:40 AM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

Brilliant shot...I can agree that Photomatix would not do that job here...lateley I also tend to use masking in PS instead of Photomatix.

Love the way the sun came out, and clouds together with airplain tracks give a great depth effect. Some more exposire on the row of logs(?) going alongside the path would be good for me to show the details there, but nevertheless great shot.

comment by Darren at 01:35 PM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

I really like this shot. Any clues on which elements come from the different images ? I can guess some but it would be interesting to know.

As for the "ultimate" pebble beach I suppose that all depends on your definition and what kind of picture you're looking to create. Felixstowe might be worth looking at as it has a pebble beach that slopes away towards the sea.

comment by Regis at 03:17 PM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

Excellent work on this shot ! You managed to merge the picture to give a great result without the merging being too visible. Cool work !

comment by Alice at 03:56 PM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

Beautiful shot. I love the composition and exposure. Nice job with combining several images.

comment by KJM at 04:13 PM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

Probably many others closer to home, and indeed it probably couldn't be further from you and still be in England, but Dungeness has (I think) some vast expanses of shingle, and, err, the added attraction of a nuclear power station for the kids!

comment by Parker at 04:39 PM (GMT) on 25 January, 2007

No pebble beaches around here, in the desert, in America. Sorry. :-)

I do love this photo though. Beautiful. Reminds me of a scene from the game Myst.

I would have to agree with Richard for pebble beaches look to Chesil Beach:

Perhaps Swan Lake Bay in Pembrokeshire. It's near Manorbier and quite secluded. No shots to hand, I'm miles away I'm afraid.

I like this shot, it could be Sinberia because it looks so cold. Great high cloud producing that whispy effect. Is it Cirrus?

Hi, I'm Brazilian and I have visited your site sometimes, but haven't commented.
The pictures are too beautiful, and I hope you continue for a long time with this site, is one of my preferred ones.
I've decided to comment now because this is the most beautiful image I have already seen here.
I don't know if the English is too good, sorry.
Congratulations ;)

Nice shot. I don't live in the UK, nor do I have such wonderful vistas as you so for this shot I had to travel to Wisconsin. It's not a perfect shot, but it got me to thinking on how I could improve it or spice it up. Take a look if you want: http://www.lightchaser.shutterchance.com/photoblog/25895.htm
You should also be able to click on my name and link to it if the above doesn't work. Keep up the great work David, hopefully you will find what you are looking for.
