I liked yesterday's off-centre comp, but love this expression (made me smile) DoF and the B&W.

Look how happy he is! He is very photogenic.
Great composition and toning on this one. I like yesterday's photo but today's is more pleasant.

I have to say, after looking at yesterday's image for quite a while, I think the angle of the subject's face had alot to do with the success or (relatively speaking) failure of the shot. The angle of today's was much easier to deal with DoF-wise, and I have to say B&W is just so much better for poraiture. Aside from all the technical aspects, he's a lovely little fella, and how can you mess up shooting this face!!!

i think i prefer yesterdays shot mostly because of the colour of the boys hat although this one is better framed for me...nice work david

This shot is extremly adorable and I love his eyes. But I think I personally dig yesterday's more because of the color. I think kids come out so much better in color.

comment byJD at 12:02 PM (GMT) on 13 February, 2007
so howd you manage to get it so soft at f4??? post processing or hardware filters?
I find the circular catchlight to be a little distracting, possibly just the position being so close to the pupil (and slightly overlapping)...
Love the black and white and the little guys expression ;)
great work

I think I prefer the colours and the candid 'Ooh, what's that?" expression in the previous shot, although this is a lovely portrait, with the glint in his eyes and the friendly innocence of his gaze. I guess choosing one over another depends very much on what purpose they are supposed to represent?

Thanks everyone.
David: the flash was on the camera, but softened with a Stofen diffuser.
JD: neither. The focal point is his hat, and at this range the DoF is quite shallow.
Here's another of the same little lad I put up yesterday, and I think this is probably a better shot, though I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
