This is yet another shot from my current 'baby' project, but it's slightly more abstract than some of the recent ones I've put up.

Beautiful!!

Love the shot! I'm thinking it could use a little more contrast on the high end though. Just an opinion. :)

comment by Arthur at 08:47 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2007

Like the DOF, but maybe (within the tones already there) it could use a little more local contrast?

Nice, though!

I've seen many photos of parents holding babies hands, but none is more visually emotive as this one. Congratulations, Dave. :-)

Great dof.

This is fantastic David. I wish I would have been more into photography while my kids were this size. This is really cool

comment by Martin at 10:16 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2007

This is a shot that I really like. Good !

Cannot get any better than this. Perfect Dave!

Oh...now you've really got my attention.
This is precious. What a family keepsake it's going to be, David.

Giant and tiny - always irrsistable!

comment by owen-b at 11:56 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2007

That's got to be one of the definitive images of the sheer tininess of babies compared to what they grow up to be. It's beautiful. :) Overall it's a little lacking in contrast though - feels to me like there's n sharpness anywhere to focus on.

comment by Thomas at 11:57 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2007

Soft as a baby's... hand?
I think the contrast is fine. It helps give a softer, more dreamy feel. I also think the texture of the baby's hand wouldn't come across so delicately with a higher contrast.

comment by Dave Carrington at 11:58 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2007

That's the shot that captures the moment for me, Dave. IMHO, a tighter crop would really do it justice...

Bonjour,
Well done shot! Good tones and dof! Bravo!

comment by Sean at 01:29 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

You really have a great talent. I would love to get shots like that.

comment by Lynn at 02:06 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

My favourite of the baby shots so far.

comment by Dorene at 04:00 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

Great capture! Nothing more precious than a baby's hand...unless of course, it's their feet.

comment by P.J. at 04:32 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

Fantastic. Black and white is perfect. Shows a bit of innocence. The details are great. This is one to look back on one day for sure.

comment by Jon Swainson at 08:14 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

I love this. Perfect DOF and the B&W adds a bit of class.

comment by Ryano at 08:17 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

I totally agree with Dorene, excellent shot and great contrast, any feet pics in the pipeline Dave?

comment by Simon Goodchild at 08:40 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

It's surprising just how shallow the DOF can be at F4.0. Two questions: 1. Did you manually reduce DOF further with a blur layer in photoshop? 2. Did you manually darken the lower portion of the image with, say, dodge/burn tool or is the darkness simply a result of the flash being bounced off the ceiling?

comment by pinto at 09:43 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

Lovely shot. Very nice DOF. Has a very soft feel to it.

comment by Giorgio at 10:16 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

What tenderness!

comment by Andy at 12:48 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

The hand in the right side background looks prosthetic. The foreground is great though

comment by Alice at 02:05 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

Nice image. Good sharp detail and the B&W is nice too.

comment by David Chabashvili at 06:18 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

great image! just great!

comment by Sophie at 06:36 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

Lovely photo. That the ridges on the tiny fingers are so clear makes it all more real.

comment by chiara at 08:21 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

Very sweet! Beautiful and great use of DOF.

comment by djn1 at 09:13 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

Thanks everyone.

Ryan (and everyone else): I did try upping the contrast but though this version worked better.

Simon: yes to both your questions. I added a bit of blur to the top of the image as the lighting was a bit uneven, and the deep shadows at the bottom of the image didn't add anything to the shot.

comment by Jaynee at 10:44 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2007

I love the reflections of the little creases in the baby's hand. Wonderful shot...
