That white line to the right of the middle really catches my eye.
Nice toning. A bit on the dark side from your hand (?)
That murky brown water looks kinda creepy.
Nice one though

The water looks like it's full of rust. What have you Brits been doing to the ocean? ;)

I must admit that the sea looks like a chemical soup and the beach like an open drain. But, being a Brit and also being a geographer, I know so much better...!!!
A fascinating range of dreary colours... but to me it's on the verge of losing its photographic qualities and almost becoming painterly.
comment bySamir at 10:48 PM (GMT) on 25 February, 2007
I'm extremely jealous of your picture David! They always come out amazing
comment byshooter at 10:50 PM (GMT) on 25 February, 2007
I find myself in agreement with Mark over this and the last few posts, I do make a point of checking your blog every so often and it did cross my mind that you may have sublet it!, I mention this as the posts seemed to have dropped below your normal standard. You have carved out a niche market with your innovative and inspiring work and it seems to me at least that creativity has waned somewhat of late.
comment by Joseph at 11:12 PM (GMT) on 25 February, 2007
wow, this is sharp, its nice to have something a bit more sharp than what it has been recently. I love this. Best one for a little while in my opinion dave

I really love the texture created by the extended exposure Dave, this coupled with the tones. Superb.

This is in my opinion by far the best, though the positioning of the hoerizon is maybe a little bland...
comment byDean at 10:25 AM (GMT) on 26 February, 2007
p.s. a hoerizon is when you see a flock of 'chavie' ladies walking towards you with their prams/pushchairs...

Nice shot. Unusual color in the water. I don't think I'd want to go swimming in that. Yuck! But it makes for a cool shot.
comment byowen-b at 03:15 PM (GMT) on 26 February, 2007
I'm all for constructive criticism but to all those having a pop at Dave for his perceived lack of creativity - go out and produce something deeply creative and awe-inspiring yourself every single day for what, 3? 4 years now?
It's fair enough to not like this image, but I think it's a bit much to act the role of swindled audience.
Personally I like it. It's a nice scene, well captured. It's not as unique and 'chromasian' as a lot of other shots, but it's still got a very unique mood.
comment byshooter at 05:45 PM (GMT) on 26 February, 2007
I felt compelled to respond to owen-b, what is he saying? post but never dare utter comment unless it fits the praisebox mentality? photography is very subjective thats the whole point, as for his go out and do, I do and have done for some time, although admittedly it has only been blogged latterly as I had no idea this medium existed. The idea of being swindled made me chuckle, I am unaware of any payment I have made to this site, so guess this must be wide of the mark, as already mentioned I drop by now and again, and I give honest opinion when I post. It's a shame more don't follow suit

Thanks all, and while I've never been a great fan of sitting on the fence I think there's merit in both the criticism I've received today and the various complaints about that criticism. Or, put another way, I don't think my creativity is lacking at the moment, but I do think my time is severely restricted and that's reflected in the material I'm posting; i.e. it's not as diverse or as inventive as usual.
comment byowen-b at 11:25 PM (GMT) on 26 February, 2007
shooter - read my post again. I said that it is fine to not like a photo. I agree with you that it is very valuable to say so and offer a reason why, if something doesn't appeal. I got myself into a right state at weeklyshot a few weeks ago when I started being genuine in my praise and criticism of people's shots - seemed a lot of people just post there expecting rampant blind "WOW" comments... ;)
What made me chuckle (well actually I didn't chuckle, I muttered something under my breath) is when people take the posting of shots at Chromasia so seriously that they start to point the ever-so-slightly accusatory finger of 'lack of creativity' at the photographer as part of their comment, as if he needs some kind of wake up call. That's all I was referring to in the use of the phrase "acting the role of the swindled audience". I'm well aware we don't pay to come here! Twas but a metaphor, or something.
I probably read far too much into it. That's the trouble with this darned internet, so hard to have a reasonable open discussion! :)
comment byErik at 12:29 AM (GMT) on 27 February, 2007
The colors are fantastic and I'm happy to you posted this, because it topics something else then portrait shot from which you had a lot in recent times. This one here is well done, well post-produced and well composed.
comment byRob at 07:01 PM (GMT) on 27 February, 2007
Be balanced and honest in praise and criticism.
There are always plenty of wows and fastastics here, but wow and fantastic is not much use to a photographers improvement. I'm sure people judge Davids pictures on his standards and to have a few of those every now and again will only help him.
Having said all that, I'm aware I'll never be the photographer he is.
To put it another way........We all know when Ronaldinio has a bad game and we point that out, it doesn't mean that we'll ever be up to his standards
comment bydjn1 at 08:07 PM (GMT) on 27 February, 2007
shooter, owen and Rob: generally, I do know when I'm putting stuff up that could be better, but I do appreciate constructive criticism even when I don't have the time to shoot stuff that's up to my usual standard. The next few weeks are going to be quite busy - up until around the end of March - but after that I'm hoping that I'll have a lot more time to devote to taking decent stuff.

oh, please, pay little more than passing mind to the 'doesn't live up to your standards' commentary; blah blah blah - please shut up. you know what you need to do and why you're doing it. while it may not be my cup of teat i can appreciate exploration for personal growth; i'm sure you feel the tug inside directing you where you should go well enough days before you're directed by commentary here.
as for this, it would make an excellent advert against pollution - which actually does have its place and maybe you should look into that with this particular shot. it does remind me a bit of chocolate soup so in that way its an odd contrast between dirt and pleasure.
take care.
