Here's one of Finley for a change, taken last November. And I suspect, though wouldn't want to put any money on it, that this will be one that I like more than you. I like it because it captures something of Finley's character that I don't often manage to photograph, but as you don't know him – at least most of you don't – I'm not sure that any of that will come across.

He's adorable - that much I can tell - goes all broody ;-)

Nice angles, he looks snug.
Was going to say best looking kid of the bunch you've photographed so far, but then read he's yours.....Nice picture

Well, David, even as I do not know him, I really like this moment of thinking, waiting, this moment of silence. Well done !

The ones that mean something personal to you (the photographer) are always the best, the ones that you'll come back to. :)

Do you take many family-only shots, and print them for your own albums? At Christmas this year my girlfriend and I went through my mums collection of childhood photos of me, and watched me growing up. We got as far as my 8th birthday before we stopped for the evening. It was quite emotional for me. Your kids will treasure these as much as you do. :)

i like the shot and composition. one thing i'd change is the curves: more aggressive on the shadows. the image looks a bit flat in my opinion (and mine only).

What was once a truly superb photography blog.

Oh well.

Very much enjoyed it while it lasted.

Thank you for all the great photographs, David.

Thanks all.

Jennifer: resist that urge ;-)

owen: I wish you hadn't mentioned family albums because, when Libby gets up, she'll read your comment and say something like "other people print out loads of shots of their kids - all ours are on the internet or on your computer" ;-) So, no, I should, but I never seem to get around to it, and have thousands of RAW files and many great family shots, but I never seem to find the time to do anything with them.

peter: no disrespect, but this is a blog; i.e. I post the stuff that I'm currently working on. For the moment I'm working 24/7 on this baby project and don't have any time for anything else. So, I could either post nothing, or post the material I have. I've chosen the latter, and I de know these shots won't appeal to everyone andthat they're not as visually striking as some of my other work. And I do wish there were 48 hours in the day so I could shoot some other material too, but that's how it is at the moment.

Anyway, I guess that what I wanted to say is that normal service will be resumed shortly. The baby project will be all wrapped up by the 14th of this month, after which I'll be back to posting more varied material, so check back later this month.

Wow! There is so much feeling in this picture! The zipper is a nice detail that makes it even more interesting! If you would like to contribute some pictures to my site for artistic photographers, I would be more than happy! We will give you useful feedback on every picture you upload and we will post your photoblog's address so that even more people will have the pleasure of finindg it! Hopefully you could find some inspiration there too. Cheers // Ralf

Sounds like Peter is rather short on perspective and knows little about life.

I wonder what's going on Finleys mind at that moment in time?

I think this is one of my favourite baby shots so far - the subtle tones in his face are stunning and I just love the composition with the curve of the zipper working so nicely with the curve of the facial profile.

With respect to your recent change in direction on the blog, I much prefer nature/landscape photography to photographs of people so was initially a little disappointed. But, having tried to photograph kids on several occasions, I know how much of a challenge it is and I have to say your work is inspirational! Now I find myself disappointed when I see the odd beach shot creeping back in :)

I'm sure that whatever you turn your eye to, you'll find an eager and respectful audience so keep on doing what you do!

So David, what is it about this photo that captured his personality so well...if I had to guess, he looks like a little boy who has 4 doting older sisters...so the need for him to do much for himself probably isn't there..he can lay back, watch the world go by and others "take care of him"...I absolutely love the photos of your children, and others. I hope you are able to show more of the ones you have taken. I enjoy all your photos however, and find the different techniques, types of photos, etc all interesting. Thank you for sharing them on your blog...this is YOUR blog after all, so post what you will.

I for one enjoy the baby photos as much as the nature/landscape pictures. I can't say much about them as I am not experienced in taking pictures, but I like to express every now and then that I really enjoy your photoblog.

This said, I'd like to now as Dorene does what it is that captures Finley's personality so well.

What I don't like about commenting on blogs, is that I can't correct my mistakes afterwards. I saw this one as I was posting it: even being foreign I do know the difference between 'now' and 'know', so I'd like to KNOW as Dorene does and so forth. ;-)

Thanks everyone.

As for what I think it shows of Finley's character: he has a quiet smile when he's resting ... a contented, watching-the-world-go-by kind of look. And I don't often see it because our house is normally totally chaotic with all the kids, Finley included, running around the place like a bunch of demented lunatics ;-)

Beautiful shot and a very cute little guy.
