As I mentioned yesterday, we're just about finished with the baby project, and now only have five sections of the book to finish off. One of those is the introduction, and when I started thinking about it earlier today I realised that I didn't have any photographs to accompany it. A good proportion of the book is centred around the images, and the rest on a combination of images and screen grabs from Photoshop, but for some reason I hadn't really thought about the introduction beyond what text I might include.
Anyway, one of the things that I thought I'd talk about is that babies aren't babies for long; i.e. by the time they're about a year old they're considerably more independent. So I started looking through my archives and came across this one, taken when Finley was 13 months old. And for me, this is an ideal shot to mark the end of babyhood - Finley toddling off into the sunset :-)

I love the seemingly different layers created by the waves in the bg here - and the crop is spot on - I don't usually go for images with a centred subject matter but this one made me smile.

An excellent choice to serve as an example. Yes, you're right. Babies become more independent around that age and start exploring everything around them. It's in this phase that they have the courage to walk away from us and then return a few minutes later to get comfort and security.

This kind of things usually make me sad. We have one kid and are not planning on having another one and it only his childhood that we will enjoy as parents. I just want to cherish it as much as I can.

Lovely light and nice bokeh, as well as the emotional impact of the shot. Slightly unfortunate that the sand on his nappy looks so much like ... not sand ..
One question: where do the babies come from? Yes, I know about the stork! But the ones that aren't yours, how did you come across them?

I am at that point myself. My son is 7 months and we are wishing it would last forever. Great story and beautiful shot...I am curious though, is he so light that he leaves no footprints (or are they in the shadow), he would be a great little cat burglar. :)

A beautiful portrait of that transition between babyhood and toddler independence. (Looks like he's had a fun time on the beach, too.)

Adorable. Must be incredible to see your baby walk away in the sunset :).
I really like all the baby picture you posted. Good luck with the project.
